The Perfect Weapon Part 1

Humans used to write stories of what they imagined their future would look like. I have seen these ‘books’ as they called them, even visited an Old Earth library. 

The stories tended to have one of two themes: 

Apocalypse - many of their writers would dwell on the evils of humanity, the hazards of their death world, or even invent problems that could arise and wipe out all of human - or at least usually all but a daring and heroic few. 

Exploration - Humanity overcame all of their prejudices and problems, they cured disease and made great scientific achievements that prolonged their lives, made them better people, and then one day they started out into the universe and spread the light of humanity to the alien worlds. 

I love to read those last type of books, they are so full of hope and ambition, so full of pride and trust that given time humanity will sort out its problems. They are so wrong.

It interests me that their future turned out to be a merging of their two visions. Hell and hope met together. 

You see, humanity never overcame their biases. Race and religion and country were always there - some cared more than others, and sometimes the arguments or the problems changed. But they needed it. The strife. The competition. It’s what drove them on to make discoveries, to built starships, to colonize new worlds. The humans spread and they took their ideologies with them.

And then they met us, the ‘aliens’ - how funny to have a single name for so many species that could not be more dissimilar. They met us and they reacted. Some in fear - fled. Some in anger - fought. Some used diplomacy and strove to make peace, to establish trade. And we began to learn all that humanity had to offer us. We did not mistake them. We did not underestimate them. 

We saw the value of this new commodity.
