I’ve seen 350 features and shorts I’m considering as part of this year’s movies (thus far). Few forms of cinematic storytelling have been richer this year than the documentary. That’s actually the case most years, though; the way these filmmakers approach stories that are political, humane, inspiring or kind of bonkers, and sometimes, all at once. This year saw some fascinating explorations into these topics. My favorites involved the empathetic bond between an artist and the man who stole her art (“The Painter and the Thief”); the bizarre journey from comic character to internet meme to racist symbol for Pepe the Frog (“Feels Good Man”); a riveting exploration into a historic coup in Iran (“Coup 53,” which is currently in release limbo); a compelling look at a biased justice system through the prism of a woman’s fight to get her husband out of jail (“Time”); the story of a mercurial football star, and how his “controversies” speak to a larger racial conversation (“Lynch: A History”); a study in how the government tied Cold War paranoia into their attempts to discredit the Civil Rights movement (“MLK/FBI”); an inspiring look at one woman’s empowerment through adult cinema (“Morgana”); two men attempting to bring the magic of cinema to a war-torn part of the world (“Cinema Pameer”); and an actor redeeming himself through the sport he loves (“You Cannot Kill David Arquette”).
