Flawed

Do you remember those days before social media

when your hair was not perfect because the breeze

just happened to kick up at the time of the photo?

Or the lighting was off, blacking you in shadow,

not quite silhouette but enough that it was obvious

and made you wish that you had used a flashbulb?

Flashbulbs were disposable, and then they became

built into any decent camera, and then the cameras

shrank to hand-size and shoved into your pocket.

But you still had only 24 shots, or 36 if you wanted

to splurge, before you dropped off the film at your

local developer, and had to wait at least an hour.

Most folks came back the next day, or the day after

because pictures were exhilarating but did not rule

our minds, unless it was prom season, or autumn.

Each shot was precious, and if you got six keepers

from the bunch, it was a good day, and you made

copies for your parents or friends, 5x7 enlargements.

And life was imperfect and true and if one picture

managed to paint your life glamorous it went on

the wall above the mantle, and everybody liked it.

Quarantine Nostalgia

Before quarantine: Everyone picking teams for soccer/football/other at recess, doing group projects, sometimes dying of boredom, trying to annoy the sub, etc.

After quarantine: Everyone getting bucket-loads of homework, VCs are boring as heck, spending 24 hours in front of screens watching/reading anime, YouTube, TikTok, Tumblr, Reddit, etc., procrastinating and finishing homework at last second, not being able to find interest in a single movie/TV show/etc.

I miss those days. We used to hate being in school, but it’s worse now. I feel grateful for the days I was able to interact with my friends in real life, not just online.
