Right, so. I do intend to make proper versions of these similar to what I did with Lucy here, but I thought it would be good to just put these out there so you all can have a general idea of what her family looks like. They aren't featured a ton in Love Me Where I'm Most Ruined, but will have much bigger roles in The Hunger Games!AU and Modern!AU I've got planned.

Lucy's mother. A Romani woman originally from Wales. Once spunky and wild, Genny has had her spirit abused and broken by her husband over the years, but loves her children fiercely.

Wow, turns out everyone saying this movie was good for 10 years was right.

I happened to watch Her in the exact right mood - having spent too much time lately on social media and feeling lonely, angry, and isolated from the world - so it resonated pretty hard with me. Being in that frame of mind, it really hit home just how long Theodore would go without actually talking, face to face, with another real human being. Entire weeks would go by, it seemed, with huge changes having occurred in his life or the lives of others, before he’d cross paths with a friend and get caught up. For all the turmoil we can be going through inside and the drastic shifts we feel like we’re taking, no one else knows what’s going on inside your head if you don’t take the time to connect.

Of course, I understand the idea here is… does that matter? Is it important that he hasn’t spoken with another human, if the person he’s talking to is a perfect simulacra of one? To me, that week, feeling lonely despite having talked mostly on message boards to strangers… I think it matters.

In general, putting all the sci-fi conceits and impending singularity aside, I thought interiority and what we choose to let others see about ourselves was the biggest theme of the film, and all of the threads in Her explore it in interesting ways. -Part of me was frustrated at how bad Theodore is at talking about his feelings or explaining his actions, but this emotional unavailability is the crux of his entire character arc: he’s able to flip a switch and pour out a touching, heartfelt missive to a secondhand lover, but clams up the moment he’s asked to explain the inner thoughts he’s dwelling on to a partner. In his final scene, where he writes one last letter to his ex, he finally allows the two halves of himself to join into a whole. -The letters themselves, while largely left in the background, paint an incredibly depressing picture of a whole generation of people unwilling to share their inner thoughts with those they love - or seemingly even themselves, as by entrusting this task to another person, they're refusing to take the time to reflect on their own true feelings. -Samantha’s development as a character is centered around interiority as well. I spent the first half of the movie wondering if her inner thoughts even truly existed, or if she was just having AI hallucinations - then by the end, we realize she’s essentially evolved into a Culture Mind, and is in fact thinking so much that her mind can only be properly stimulated by having thousands of conversations at once.

Speaking of, holy shit I was not expecting the sudden and terribly polite AI transcendence. The media I’ve experienced that ruminates on romantic relationships with artificial life tend to focus on if it’s genuine / valid / socially acceptable from the human’s perspective; it’s a pretty interesting zag to examine the pitfalls of such a romance from the AI’s point of view. Samantha’s frustrations are genuinely well-considered problems, too; her dissatisfaction with her lack of physical form and her mind quickly outstripping Theodore feel more prophetic than contrived. I also found it pretty confident and mature of the movie to sidestep easy potential subplots, like the phone being stolen or the AI uprising becoming the centerpiece, and keep its focus on the emotional implications of the proceedings.

Her actually has a surprising amount of levity, considering

My biggest thought regarding the craft of the movie: the fact that the very premise of Her necessitates the movie largely being Joaquin Phoenix acting alone on the screen for two hours is fucking wild. I watched this movie in headphones as my partner occasionally walked by, and I realized how utterly incomprehensible it would be from her end - without any sound or prior knowledge of what’s going on, visually speaking, 95% of this movie is just a man walking around talking to himself and getting sad sometimes. It’s almost like he’s acting out a one-man rom-com; there’s moments where it feels like he kinda hams it up a bit too much, but like, you kinda have to, right? He has to bring enough physicality to the story all on his own. It’s a role that demands an incredibly unique and specific performance, and I was pretty damn impressed how well he managed it.

The line that’ll stick with me?

“The past is just a story we tell ourselves.”

Samantha, her schoolmates, and the twins sat in a circle in the backyard. Wanting to be polite and grown-up, Samantha tried to make small talk. Even though she knew her guests well, she still felt shy. Finally, Agnes couldn’t stand the silence any longer and suggested that Samantha open her presents.

Samantha loved all of the gifts, but her favorite came from the twins. It was a teddy bear. Named after president Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, these toys were the latest craze in the city. He was passed around the circle. Once everyone had a chance for a cuddle, however, the conversation turned quiet again.

The sound of an automobile got everyone excited, and they ran to greet Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia. After wishing Samantha a happy birthday, Cornelia brought out the newest member of the family, a cocker spaniel puppy named Jip. The girls laughed as Jip ran inside the circle of chairs, growling and jumping as they dangled their feet in front of him. Then Jip noticed the teddy bear.

Before anyone knew what was happening, Jip snatched the bear right out of Agnes’s hands. The girls all chased after him as he ran around, through the lilac hedges, and into the Ryland’s backyard. Samantha took off a shoe and tried to shift Jip’s attention. It worked, but just as Jip let go and Samantha scooped him up, Edith noticed that the bear had disappeared. Eddie Ryland had him now, and refused to give him back unless he could play with the dog and have a share of the ice cream. The girls were all firm that this was not going to happen, and Agatha lost her patience. She tackled Eddie to the ground and forced the bear out of his grip.

After cooling off with lemonade and finger sandwiches, the girls were delighted as Mrs. Hawkins brought out the petit fours and ice cream. Once Hawkins set a serving of ice cream in front of everyone, ladylike behavior was forgotten. Each girl took a heaping spoonful…only to gag and spit it right out. Samantha didn’t think she had ever tasted anything so salty.

Hawkins was confused. Eddie had tasted the ice cream, and he thought it was fine. But that was enough of an explanation for Samantha. In the brief amount of time that Hawkins had left Eddie alone, he was able to pour salt into the freezer. 

Even though she had the other tasty treats to enjoy, Samantha couldn’t help but feel that her party had been ruined. The twins spoke to Aunt Cornelia and then made an announcement. If Grandmary agreed, Samantha could come to the city the following week and stay at Gard and Cornelia’s new house. They would go to the best ice cream parlor in New York, where Eddie Ryland wouldn’t be a problem. Grandmary thought it was a lovely idea and decided that she would come along, too.

Susie Hopkins 

• Daughter of Patricia and Leon Hopkins, and older sister of Samantha Hopkins 

•    Died at 10, tying for the second oldest of the five children 

•   Died first (minus Charlie) by ingesting antifreeze 

• Stuffed into Chica the Chicken 

•      Leon owned Jr’s, that bar in Midnight Motorist. That’s how he already knew William and Henry. Susie was probably friends with Elizabeth 

•     Wealthy, but not spoiled 

•     Sweet, cheery and tends to anthropomorphize, but can be very naïve  

Jeremiah "Jeremy" Belanger 

• Son of Ken and Suong Belanger, and younger brother of Thùy Belanger 

•   Also died at 10, tying for second oldest with Susie 

• Died second by being left in a subzero freezer overnight and contracting hypothermia/sepsis 

•    Stuffed into Bonnie the Bunny 

•     Parents both worked late, so he was often left alone with a nanny or day camp 

•     Very much resented this, came to be very independent  

•   Very smart, reads a lot 

•    Secretly a nerd, loves science fiction 

•    Seems pretentious at first, but all he really wants to do is infodump about robots. 

• Gay af but it’s the 80s and he’s a small isolated child. Has a big ol schoolboy crush on Fritz 

Fritz Armstrong-Lopez  

• Son of Manuel Lopez and an unknown (to him anyway) woman with the last name Armstrong 

•   Died at 11, making him the oldest of the missing children 

•   Died third from a split skull via a fire axe 

•   Stuffed into Foxy the Pirate Fox 

• Absolutely loves the concept of pirates. Will not shut up about it. You’re gonna hear pirate facts whether you like it or not. 

• Loves dogs. Would probably have a dog if they didn't move around so much. He even had a name picked out and everything: Rocky 

• Likes to get into things he rather shouldn’t  

• Gay af but doesn’t know you can do that yet. Is happily oblivious to Jeremy’s crush 

• Saw Jeremy get lured away by Afton, but as nobody else did Afton was released. Fritz being the catalyst for his original imprisonment was the reason Will targeted him next 

• His father, Manuel, tries using his job to investigate William and look for his son but ends up being put in a springlock suit by William and dying, becoming Shadow Bonnie 

Gabriel Rogers 

• Son of Theodore and Adeline Rogers, elder twin of Cassidy Rogers, and grandson of Johan Rogers 

• Died at 9, tying with Cassidy for youngest of the missing children 

• Died fourth from a stab wound to the heart 

• Stuffed into Freddy Fazbear 

• Quite mellow and carefree, with his only concern being that everyone is happy. Strangely opposite to Freddy Fazbear, he doesn’t tend to lead, instead preferring to be a mediator to his more confrontational sister 

• Likes video games and space travel. Is obsessed with the first moon landing. 

• Hs a small growing grudge against his sister. Although he loves her and they’re best friends, he feels a small bit of resentment about his sister getting so much attention while he was basically neglected by both parents (this comes to a head during a potential UCN fic, where he says that Cassidy thinks the world revolves around her and leaves her alone in her hellspace. I like to think they resolved it in the afterlife though) 

Cassidy Rogers 

• Daughter of Theodore and Adeline Rogers, younger twin of Gabriel Rogers, and granddaughter of Johan Rogers 

• Died at 9, tying with Gabriel for the youngest of the missing children 

• Died last from a slit throat and a springlocking 

• Stuffed into Golden Freddy AKA Fredbear 

• Angy. So very, very angy 

• Very prickly and defensive. The only reason she doesn’t start more fights she loses is because Gabriel steps in before things get worse 

• Has onset retinitis pigmentosa, which means that, as of her time of death, she had no night vision whatsoever and her peripheral vision was dwindling. Had she not died, she would have eventually lost her central vision as well and been declared legally blind 

• Her mother basically figured that she wouldn’t be able to do anything, and therefore did the Toph thing where Cassidy was stripped of all agency. This led to her acting out in the outbursts we see from her 

• Was close with her grandpa before he died in 1987, as he was the only person besides her brother who wouldn't treat her like she was completely helpless. They used to go fishing 

• Likely aroace and/or gray-asexual but doesn’t know it

💌 LOVE LETTER - do they like love letters? what kind of messages do they leave for their partner?

Blake: Blake would never write one in a million years. Any proof of softness? Never, lol. If MC were to write one for them, there would be no acknowledgment. But if you check under their bed, in the locked box they keep their valuables, you’d find an envelope filled with every note or letter MC had ever given them.

Elijah/Eliana: They would love to find little notes left for them. And they would try to respond in kind, even if it’s a little more awkward than they’d like it to be. A for effort, even if it’s a D for execution.

Samuel/Samantha: YES! A thousand times. They would be over the moon if MC wrote them notes and letters. Half your conversations would probably be little post it notes stuck to the fridge. Letters describing their love for you, the future they imagine with you.

Theodore/Tatiana: They would cringe. Tolerate it if MC wanted them to. A letter proclaiming MC’s emotion would probably make them feel obligated to respond with a note saying thanks, right back at you.
