Hello everyone! I’ve spent the last couple months working on the Do It With Style Reverse Bang, and it’s about time to start posting!

The author is myself, and my wonderful artist partner has been Anna/thenoctambulist, whose lovely art can be previewed above! This is only the first of a few illustrations, so be sure to check it out when it goes live!

Is it still honesty hour? Please tell me how you background. I do not know how to background and I feel like my art is empty without it so please lmk I love you but spill your secrets you sorcerer

Yes! Ok! Backgrounds!!! So usually it just depends on the mood I’m trying to convey. In my more realistic works, the character is the focus, so the background will probably be more muted and/or have the same color scheme (or a complementary one, but I’m not gonna go into that now). Basically, choose colors that aren’t going to pull the eye away from the foreground. For example, in my 1967 Crowley study, I just used a lot of darker reds and oranges in the background, cause I had already been using lots of reds in the foreground (Crowley’s face). In my 1941 doodle, the background helped to convey what was happening in the scene (the bookshop at night). Enough of my rambling, here are some tips!

In my experience, you’ll always want a horizon line, a light source, and a color palette to figure out the background. The horizon line is simple, really, and idk entirely how to explain it, and since my realistic drawings are usually centered on faces I don’t actually always need them, and most of my cartoony drawings are inside, so the “horizon line” would just be a wall or something to that degree. This also involves a whole bunch of perspective shit that I feel like I couldn’t explain in typing, so my advice is to wing it. Go wild. See where you end up. Art is supposed to be fun.

Light sources are fun, because you can pick a point and make a whole bunch of scribbly arrows to guide you! If the scene is outside, you can always go outside at whatever time of day the drawing would be at and look around to see how things look in terms of shadows and ambience. If it’s inside, think about what kind of light is being cast. Is it a dim lamp? A chandelier? The white lights in the hallways at Target that are way too fucking bright? Whatever your light source, trying to recreate it is always helpful. 

Color palettes are admittedly difficult to master, but my advice is really to just see what colors look good together. Checking out some moodboards or even just looking at color-schemed photography is always a good idea. You’ll likely notice some similarities as you explore. 

Honestly the best advice I can give is to look at references and to sketch. Yes, sketching can be digital, but sometimes it’s nice to just sketch with a good old fashioned pencil. It doesn’t have to be good. Art is art, regardless of the gallery. 

Reminder that this is what works for me, and I am by no means a professional! You don’t have to listen to any of my advice if you find something that works better for yourself.
