There’s something about a piece of media - such as a TV show, an anime, a manga, or a video game - with a primarily/all-female cast that piques my interest more than a story that has a mixed male/female cast or - even a story that has a big focus on teenage boys/young men a’la shounen - that makes me want to dig my hands into it and just. Dive as deep as I can go into it, all for the sake of something as simple as playing around with the lore or, if I’m doing crossovers, make it fantastical and absurd and watch how it all unfolds. It doesn’t even have to be fantasy like Magic Knight Rayearth (which is one of my favorite settings for me to go Weird Yet Fantastical with it); it could be as mundane and down-to-earth as a dating sim such as Tokimeki Memorial or one of the various idol gachas that make use of fantasy props but are still set within the bounds of reality a’la Love Live, Idolmaster, Bang Dream, ProSekai, etc. I will take to them like a fish to water (although as you can see, for me, ninety-nine percent of time I tend to - and am going to - lean more into the anime side of things over Western media).

And I think that says something about me as both a person and a writer, because while it’d be extremely easy for me to look at media with primarily/all-male cast and reap the rewards (because let’s be real here, male-focused stories produce a way bigger draw with fan content than stories with female focus by a wide margin), it - honestly wouldn’t feel anywhere near as exciting and stimulating let alone interesting for me than I would with media where it’s the reverse and the inverse. I may read a genre like shounen and peruse the fandom sections for a fic to read, but as a writer the chances of me throwing my two cents in are pretty much slim to none. As in, I wouldn’t have the same drive I do with female characters. And that’s okay, because I strive for quality in all my works; and if I were to throw my weight into a fandom that isn’t really drawing me in then IMO it would not only be unfair to my works but to those readers in that section if the interest, the drive, and the quality aren’t there.

Really, I just like adding more content into that Vast Fanfic Void where the girls and the women take center stage and have their moments to shine (even if part of that must include a pinch of that BRAND NAME ANGST). Nothing gives me much greater joy than that.
