Ronald McKinley Everett "Maulana Karenga," the "founder" of Kwanzaa: This man was convicted of two counts of felonious assault and one count of false imprisonment against black women. He had these women whipped with electrical cords and karate batons. He had soldering irons placed on their faces and mouths. He burnt them with cigarettes. He put detergent and running water into their mouths and inserted water hoses into their vaginas. He was an informant for the FBI, having been recruited in part with the Public Disorder Intelligence Unit, of the CCS (Criminal Conspiracy Section, LAPD) to monitor black political activities in California. Karenga worked with the LAPD running guns to black militant groups in the hopes of starting a gang war. He was involved in the killings of Black Panther Party leaders John Huggins and Alpretnice "Bunchy" Carter. John Henrik Clarke said, "He has not atoned to the community for his attempt to destroy the Panther movement. He has not atoned for being a police informer. He has not atoned for the way he treated black women. And look now, the women he mistreated and mutilated were dark-skinned in complexion, the women in his harem are light in complexion. The number one woman is a Mexican with what seemed to be an Afro wig. He not only has a color problem, he’s got an ego problem, too." #TheMoreUKnow #BlackHistory365 #Kwanzaa #NguzoSaba

#FactFriday #TheMoreUKnow From looking at my IG page, you may think all I do is work out, cook healthy meals at home, and eat out at local spots! But teaching group fitness classes, learning how to cook healthier at home, and traveling as a self-proclaimed GastroTourist are my part-time gigs! As a full-time public health professional, I work in cardiac arrest research. I interact with EMS personnel, medical directors, nurses, and hospital administrators all over the United States. My research team is in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Click on my FB link in my profile to view this full infographic on the #PublicHealth importance of cardiac arrest, created by the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion, Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. #ThisIsPublicHealth #PublicHealthNerdMSPH

in 1921 two trains collided head on in this gulch & resulted in 27 deaths – half of southampton’s commuter population. fire & wooden train cars didnt mix well. it’s cause of this crash that laws were changed and prohibited the use of wooden train cars…. local history 🐥#themoreuknow (at Pennypack Creek)

🇵🇷flag in mourning🇵🇷 For many Puerto Ricans, the national flag is a symbol of cultural pride and identity, especially in light of the island's colonial status under the United States’ government. Now, with an artistic tweak, the flag also represents the state of mourning that the island has been experiencing since the US government imposed a federal control board with power over the commonwealth's jurisdiction. A group of artists have altered a famous door painted with the Puerto Rican flag by changing its original colors from blue, red, and white to black and white to mark the approval of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act, also known as PROMESA. Passed by the US Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama, the act was promoted as a way to manage Puerto Rico's more than $70 billion of debt. But PROMESA severely undermines the island's political autonomy. Its measures, which include a decrease of the hourly minimum wage to US $4.24 (about $3 less than the US federal minimum wage), have galvanized people to organize daily civil disobedience events and camps. The flag mural is located on the facade of an abandoned building on San José Street in Old San Juan, and before its makeover locals and tourists alike often took photos of it as a memory of their visit. The door is surrounded by litographs of famous Puerto Rican artists made by the collective Grabadores por Grabadores. #ThePuertoricanFlagInMourning #puertoricanlivesmatter #ElBarrio #BeatBoi #Themoreuknow #prpower 🇵🇷#rebel #riseup #4645 (at National Puerto Rican Day Parade)
