December 26 marks the first day of Kwanzaa — today we’re reflecting on the unity of our allies, partners and volunteers in the fight for voting rights.
For those who might not know: Kwanzaa is a seven-day festival, founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a pushback on the commercialism of Christmas and a way for Black Americans to celebrate the holiday through community building practices shared across the continent of Africa. The week is grounded is five central sets of values: ingathering, reverence, commemoration, recommitment and celebration.
Each day of #Kwanzaa is a celebration of a unique principle (the Nguzo Saba). The celebration always begins on 12/26 with Umoja (oo-MOH-ja) — unity.

❤️🖤💚 @kwanzaachat . Habari Gani! The 5th day of #Kwanzaa is #Nia, #Purpose! Make sure Nia/Purpose centers everything you do. Don't move an inch without understanding what your purpose is and why it matters. Spend your energy doing, building, thinking, creating things that will not only benefit you, but will benefit others. Living your purpose boldly, without fear, will give others room to do the same. Lean on #Nia, always. Five flames. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 #Kwanzaa #KwanzaaChat #7Principles #NguzoSaba #HabariGani #Kwanzaa365 #HappyKwanzaa #Kwanzaa2020 #AfricanaStudies #CelebrateKwanzaa #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistory #Africana #Sankofa #Ashe #Ase Visuals: @sovereignnewell of @sovereignmade https://www.instagram.com/littlehaitifieldtrips/p/CYImgtotCWL/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Kwanzaa is a week long reflective holiday celebration created in 1966 with the intention of RECONNECTING African-Americans and the African diaspora with the Motherland after being physically separated and spiritually disconnected by the horrible and traumatic trans-Atlantic slave trade. The traditional colors of Kwanzaa are to represent the unity of all African descended people across the Earth. Red is for the struggle, the passion, and blood shed by the ancestors. Green is for the Earth, the richness and beauty of the natural world, the bountifulness of life, and abundance of possibilities for the future. Black is for the power and unity of the people. Kwanzaa is celebrated 7 days, with each day representing a guiding principle aka #NguzoSaba which is reflected on that day. On the 1st day, the black candle is lit in honor of the principle of unity or #Umoja On the 2nd day, a red candle is lit for self-determination or #Kujichagulia The 3rd day, another red candle is lit for collective work and responsibility or #Ujima On the 4th day, the last red candle is lit for cooperative economics or #Ujamaa On the 5th day, a green candle is lit for purpose or #Nia The 6th day, another green candle is lit for creativity or #Kuumba And on the 7th and last day, the last green candle is lit for faith or #Imani #foodforthought #HabariGani #happykwanzaa https://www.instagram.com/p/CJRV_a1nQbd/?igshid=8hmy2ypviva1

Kujichagulia. Self-determination.
A reminder that our choices are what shape our situations, and how we choose to perceive our truths. What choices did we make in 2019 to better ourselves? What were the consequences of those choices, good or bad? What choices can I make in 2020 to make sure that I am living as my best self?

#Repost @senecavillagemontessori with @get_repost ・・・ The story of the Black Panthers and their "We can do it for ourselves" attitude is the perfect example of self determination: In Oakland, the Black Panthers brought a new message of self-determination. The message caught on and their programs quickly spread to black communities across the country, tired of waiting to be saved or treated with equity. By the end of 1969, the Black Panthers were serving full free breakfasts (including milk, bacon, eggs, grits, and toast) to 20,000 school aged children in 19 cities around the country, and in 23 local affiliates every school day. The breakfast program gave the Black Panthers an anchor to talk about something that seldom made the headlines in America—hunger and poverty. The breakfast program was just one of many programs the Panthers ran to address the needs of the poor. In fact, they developed more that 60 Serve the People programs, including efforts to provide free clothing and shoes, medical services —including drug and alcohol awareness, —legal aid education, and what was thought to be some of the first true early childhood education programs in the nation, preceding Head Start. . . . . . .#ittakesavillage #SenecaVillageMontessori #kujichagulia #kwanzaa2018 #nguzosaba #community https://www.instagram.com/p/Br5DDUEnFmE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18y9ckdetv7ft

#REPOST @soulflow_butterfly with @get__repost__app Happy new year and happy day 7 of Kwanzaa! ⭐️❤🖤💚⭐️ Today's principle, we celebrate Imani (Faith) which is to believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, & the righteousness & victory of our struggle. It may not be easy, but faith – especially during difficult times – brings us closer to making our dreams a reality. We look within and above to strive for a higher level of spirituality and a better life for ourselves and for those around us. Imani reaffirms our self-worth and the confidence that we can triumph over struggle. Remember what our ancestors accomplished and the circumstances under which they prevailed. Blaze your own path and light the way for others. #kwanzaa #nguzosaba #7days7principles #Imani #faith #community #family #repostandroid #repostw10 https://www.instagram.com/p/CYNLqXqrQIr/?utm_medium=tumblr
