Move, 2018, Puppets and Sculpture Installation by Amanda Strong, Michif (Métis). Maaschii (to move). Collection of the artist. Another remarkable quote from the artist: “We moved to follow the herd. We moved to survive. We moved to resist. We fled into the costume of survival. That moving-fighting spirit lives in me. Growing up in rural Ontario I was a gender fluid kid who always wanted to move my feet, to move and fight against the gender herds. Skateboarding was an expression and release from conformities. As an Indigenous girl - I was constantly asked if I was a boy or was told I looked like one because of my choices of how I wanted to move. The board and wheels were but a modern vessel of travel and time that transported me into a zone where it didn’t matter who or what I was - it was a move to break free from the costumes. “ - Amanda Strong @spottedfawnproductions Boarder X. - Reclaim the Board. Boarder X brings together interdisciplinary contemporary art from artists of Indigenous nations across Canada who surf, skate and snowboard. In this exhibition these practices are vehicles to challenge conformity and status quo, as well as demonstrate knowledge and performed relationships with the land. July to October Mackenzie Art Gallery, 3475 Albert Street, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Potlatch or Die, 2018, (top right and lower left of quartet) Acrylic on wood by Bracken Hanuse Corlett. Wuikinuxv, Klahoose Nations. Collection of the artist. This quote from the artist caught my attention: “This Launch Ramp is adorned in a skull and copper figure that connote our ceremonial practice in the Big House. The use of skulls was a key reason for the Church placing bans on our ceremony and it was a complete misunderstanding of their use. “Skate or Die,” a phrase originally coined from a late-80’s video game, persists to this day and is a mantra I often repeat in my head if I am feeling too lazy to move. If you’re not out there skateboarding you may be better off dead. I’ve come to understand how fast we can transition from youth to feeling old. Maintaining everyday movement and our ceremony are keys to our health and longevity.” - Bracken Hanuse Corlett. Boarder X. - Reclaim the Board. Move, 2018, (part 2) Puppets and Sculpture Installation by Amanda Strong, Michif (Métis). Maaschii (to move). Collection of the artist. Installation Quote from the artist continued from my last post: “My practice in stop motion animation and photography are both arduous processes that capture movement by the control of a single frame. This piece combines the iconic photo sequence in skateboard photography, with the tedious and sculptural stop motion animation to replicate the sequential moving image into a controlled “frame”. These self puppets are indeed an Indigenous woman doing a flip, breaking down the move- breaking down the gender barriers of sport, breaking free. I move.“ - Amanda Strong @spottedfawnproductions Boarder X. - Reclaim the Board.
