all i’m saying is that Five definitely was the baby that had all the nannies worried because when all the other kids were talking and uttering their first words, he was silent. they thought he wasn’t going to talk until they asked him if he could say “nanny-whatever-her-name-was” and he said “yes i can, why?”

adsfAFSGD valid little baby!Five just being a fairly quiet kid who can still get his point across through a series of tugging at people to get their attention and pointing at things and never really seeing the point of babbling like his siblings

so he just. doesn’t talk. and people worry about him because he hasn’t spoken his first words yet (actually he has but only to his siblings and his first word was probably “no”) and so it becomes a game of trying to get five to talk

and five is a contrary little bastard so the more they try and get him to talk to less he’s inclined to do so

until eventually they’re all like “okay five sweetie we want to just get checked out to make sure nothing is wrong or anything…”

and five is like “whatever for? nothing is wrong with me.”

and everyone is like ?????????? 

and then when they tell the others no one believes them and five refuses to do a repeat performance because he’s a brat

at least some of his siblings are in on it. probably ben, who wishes he’d done the same thing because now no one expects five to talk but they expect ben to otherwise he’s being ‘rude’

i’m really interested in writing a baby!five (like someone he’s regressed even younger than 13 but is still, like, mentally the five we know and love) fic bc i love him- how would you characterize him? and what do you think his relationships with each other the siblings would be?

I have some info about headcanons for a babier Five right here! I’ll be honest most of my own personal musings on a little Five have focused around him and his relationship with Claire bc I have a feeling they would team up and become an unstoppable duo together - which also ends up with me thinking a lot about Patrick as well lmao so there’s that

But overall I think his relationship with his siblings would be,, tense to say the least until they came to a happy medium about being realistic about his current capabilities vs. his fierce independence born out of not having anyone to rely on for the vast majority of his life

I’d say it’s probably the most tense with Allison?? Because she’s a mother so of course she’s going to treat him like a child. She has a child. She’s going to lean on what she knows and do some stuff automatically and Five would hate that!! At least the other siblings probably would have no idea what to do with a child or how to treat one and so they have no preconceived notions about what a small child is capable of tbh

Probably second worst at first is Klaus?? Just because Klaus would 100% swing Five up into his arms and use a baby voice and make kissy noises and proclaim that Five is “Adorable!” every few minutes if only to wind Five up and make him angry. It probably gets better after a pretty frank meltdown on the issue that has Klaus treading more carefully, but I mean,, Klaus is a touchy feely person. That’s who he is. 

But as an interesting paradox Klaus being 100% willing to sweep Five up and cuddle him might actually lead to Five seeking Klaus out more if he wants affection since he doesn’t know how to ask for it. He’d put up token protests, but any protest short of actually jumping away or using a knife is probably just for show tbh so yeah when he wants affection and doesn’t want to admit it he’d go to Klaus,, plus Klaus probably takes Five’s side on arguments to play devil’s advocate and start shit because you know Klaus totally would

Vanya probably respects Five’s choices the best out of the siblings, automatically making her Five’s favorite. If Five insisted on doing something by himself she’d probably just let him. If he succeeds, he succeeds. If he doesn’t, she’ll help after, easy as that. She probably doesn’t pick him up mainly because she’s afraid of dropping him but I mean I’m sure Five jumps places and is perfectly capable of jumping onto counters or tables to have conversations at a better height tbh. She always frames things as requests or reflecting back on her like “I get worried when you vanish” and so therefore Five is letting Vanya know when he goes off not because she told him he has to but because he doesn’t want her to worry and stuff like that

Luther is just,, awkward tbh bless his heart. Probably not super patient with Five and has a tendency to just grab him and move him places which makes Five bristle and get on the defensive. But I mean. Luther also has no concept of what children do or are capable of so he’s also probably the one Five jumps in front of like “Luther drive me to the department store/library/other place in town” and Luther is just kind of like “okay I can do that” (also probably the one who threatens Five with a child leash if he just ditches Luther someplace again because then Allison will chew him out about losing a Child)

And there’s Diego who has all these protective instincts and a very unwilling recipient who swings wildly between “You know what fuck you do what you want I don’t care” and “but what if you got HURT or LOST, Five????” and just generally does Not Know what to do with himself in this situation. Probably butts heads with Five a lot over Five wanting to go off on his own or otherwise do things Diego classifies as dangerous and it never helps that Klaus, who loves to start shit, will often take Five’s side regardless of any actual opinions on the topic just to start drama

and oh man I could see Five really getting vicious, like being too small to do real damage physically makes him feel way more cornered than your regularly scheduled Five but he is certainly capable of using his tongue as a weapon and hitting all of the siblings where it hurts (and then you have the issue of Five being fully aware of the punishments Reginald gave him at his current physical age, because I doubt Reginald stood for defiant behavior very well, and so he might just be pushing boundaries to figure out where those boundaries are because it’s really scary to not know where the line in the sand is - especially for someone used to toeing that same line)

but I mean I think each sibling will have pros and cons and issues that need to be addressed - they’re all still processing their own childhood traumas after all and Five, who as I mentioned is incredibly independent and almost incapable of relying on others after his extreme isolation, is going to have a really rough time if he’s being forced to rely on others and he’d absolutely hate any and all limitations placed upon him and would probably reject those limitations even if they’re in place for a good reason (like being forbidden from using the stove, or having to be in a car seat/unable to drive period, or having someone with him when he goes out, absolutely no alcohol, and other such ground rules)

But yeah there are so many potential stories within such a universe!! I’m definitely curious to see where you take it and please do link me your story if you do go for it as I would love to read!!

awe congrats on getting into grad school!!!! i’m still in high school, any life-saving advice for me???

HMMM good question!! Advice for people going into college…

First of all: know yourself. Are you not a morning person? Then don’t look at the 8am classes, even if there’s a little voice in your head going “Hey, I used to have to be at school at 7am, 8am is practically a lie in” do NOT listen. That voice is the devil tempting you. It will be hell. Don’t do it. 

Where you can, try and block your classes together. What I usually went with was, on a three-classes-a-day schedules, have two classes back to back, lunch, another class. Or vice versa, one class, break for lunch, two classes. I will be honest with you, once you go back to your room you won’t want to go back to class. If you leave yourself hours between classes because you’re like “Oh i’ll do homework and sit on the quad and be productive!!” you are lying to yourself - you will not be productive you will not end up studying it’s better to get it all out of the way and then go home and do your work and study

That being said, look at where your classes are before blocking them together. You get like, ten minutes to make it from one class to the next - make sure that is doable before anything else goodness (though a lot of profs don’t care if you arrive a few minutes late because they understand you might be coming from a way away)

You won’t get professors for every class, and in fact a good portion of your classes will be taught by TAs, and even if they’re not then a lot of classes still have TAs who are the ones who do a lot of the grading. Go to the TAs when you have issues with homework - they’re the ones grading it probably and they will have the best advice for those specific assignments

Professors and TAs are in this with you and they’re people!! Talk to them! I promise you they’re usually pretty accommodating. If you have a bunch of essays due and exams in one week and you’re pulling your hair out in stress, tell them! Ask for extensions! They want you to succeed! If you’re asking for extension that means you’re planning on DOING the assignment! (related: a lot of classes will have late policies where you lose points or drop letter grades for turning stuff in late - even if you think it’s useless turn your shit in anyway even late, every point matters my friends)

Some classes require textbooks. Some classes “require” textbooks. Find out which is which. Textbooks are hecking awful and expensive, but there are ways to get around them. You can rent a textbook. Look online for people who have already done the class who might be able to sell you their old textbook for cheap. Ask the prof if the new edition is absolutely required, and if not get an older edition. Get that shit used. Some classes will put a copy on reserve at the library, so if you do your homework early and ahead of the curve you can go to the library to do your work - this doesn’t work if you’re a person who waits until the last minute though since the book might not be available oof

If you’re looking at grad school, get involved early. I’m psych so idk how everything works in other majors, but research was important for me and you can often get course credits. Volunteer. Talk to your professors. If you have a professor you really like, see if they have other classes. Establish relationships as early as possible with people who might eventually be the ones you ask to write you letters of recommendation to graduate programs

If you can i highly recommend looking to becoming a Resident Advisor in a dorm - you’ll get free or at the very least discounted housing depending on if you’re looking at university or private certified housing, and quite frankly people go NUTS for housing experience on grad applications because so many of the skills are applicable. It’s work, but like I said it’s good for housing costs and good on applications - I’ll have done three years as an RA upon graduation and I would definitely say it’s been helpful

look into scholarships!! there’s lots of scholarships you can try for to help with funding including things like housing specific ones. Always ask! Keep an open mind! Figure out what learning style is best for you (I do better in seminar classes than lecture, for example - it’s the adhd) and seriously don’t be afraid to ask for help!!

Probably next month if I get around to it? I graduate on May 12th and I’m not working over the summer (going to stay home and help look after my dad more) since I highkey need a break before grad school murders me

(on a related note!! i just got accepted into my top grad school today!!!! i was on the waitlist for it and was accepted into two other programs so I was always going to go to grad school but I think I’ll be so much happier,, not in the city lmao)

school is picking up now bc we nearly at the end (oof final papers and final exams) which is why i haven’t been as active BUT i have high hopes for the summer for my writing productivity! I definitely have a few aus that I’d like to give attention to (like the immortality au, or the run away one, or even just find time to write about orange idiot) but I definitely have a list!!
