This cartoon takes on added significance as Martellus's football-playing brother and inspirational activist Michael Bennett @mosesbread72 was recently assaulted by Las Vegas police for doing absolutely nothing wrong *while black.* As a social justice leadership camp, YEA Camp admires these courageous brothers and of course camper hero @kaepernick7 + others who use their unique opportunities to bring about change. Years ago (2011), I created two characters from scratch--- "Mally and Jasper", both of which were created with an intent to help New Orleans youth develop a sense of imagination to follow them throughout the rest of their lives. Initially, this served as an opportunity to give others the confidence to feel artistic in their own ways. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to take a backseat and watch a host of others create and took mental notes along the way, with @martellusb & @d_brutjr30 being two of the most inspiring factors along the way. My first opportunity to publicize these little guys was at a summer camp years ago, which allowed the kids to create their "Mally and Jasper" as they colored in black and white templates. Furthermore, I have made a decision to start writing Children's Books built around these two characters as they meet a host of friends along the way. At this present moment, I am looking to be connected to a multitude of resources that might be able to assist in my efforts to make this a reality as I begin to put these short stories together. As the stories are put together, I am looking to also create a variety of products to raise awareness to "Mally and Jasper". Please contact me with any resources you might be able to put me in connection with as me and my little friends make a commitment to make literacy a top priority in New Orleans. martellusb: I’ve decided to move on from the world of football and into the fantastical and wondrous world of creativity. To be honest I was never really a football player I’ve always just been a creative guy who played football. I’ve loved some parts of the game but never everything about it. The game of football has been a huge part of my journey but it has never been my final destination. Nor has it been my life’s work. I always knew that this roller coaster ride would end I’ve enjoyed every up and down twist and turn, as well as every scream and shout. It was fun, scary, exciting, painful, frustrating and I’ve had the joy of being on this rollercoaster a lot longer than most. But it’s time to get off of it and ride another ride at MartyLand as I begin my life’s work of creativity something that I love every single part of. I would like to thank all of my teammates that have listened to my crazy ass ideas in the sauna, cold tubs, hot tubs, planes, buses, lunch table, dinner table, breakfast table, training rooms, in between meetings, before meetings, after meetings, before & after practice, during special teams periods at practice lol, at your houses, at my house, the bathroom, equipment room, my art studio. I’d like to thank the coaches who found ways for me to be creative at work because they knew I needed that balance. I appreciate you all.
