The Hunting Party Review

Just before New Year's Eve, a group of friends get on a train for the remote wilderness to ride out the year in a luxurious lodge. The inner circle were friends in college, bringing along new friends and partners. This group holds a lot of memories and a lot of secrets.

Set deep in the Scottish Highlands, the group finds themselves snowed in. Nothing to worry about, surely? There's food and champagne and a hot tub. There could be worse ways to be stuck. Except one of their number is killed and now there's a killer in their midst. Suddenly getting out becomes a priority.

This is the kind of atmospheric thriller that I love. Even from the start you can pick up on tensions amongst the friends. The characters are so different, with their own desires and personalities. Each one is as suspicious and unlikable as the next.  The overeager one, desperate to please, grates on the nerves of the others. The golden princess carries a few too many secrets. Couples seem to have fraying relationships. The loner of the group is hiding something, distancing herself. The trip is loaded with tension and just the right spark will set it ablaze.

This feels like a class murder mystery and I absolutely raced through it, changing my guess for the murderer constantly. No one was safe - everyone has motive and something to hide. And yes, above I said that the characters were unlikable. For some this may be an issue but I enjoyed it. Honestly, they had their good points but for the most part, they were stripped down to their darkest desires and secrets. I liked that in such an isolated and stressful setting, the veneer they tried to put up was stripped away. The charm, the beauty and the ambition - none of that mattered. This book showed the characters exactly as they were in a traumatic situation. What you are in the dark at it's best. They weren't meant to be likeable. Few people in that scenario would be, when your friends turn on you, threaten you, and you view each other as suspects.

This book was a 4.5, rounded up to a five for ranking purposes! This is a creepy thriller that I recommend everyone pick up when it releases.

📚The Hunting Party📚 . ⭐⭐⭐ . QOTD: What is your favorite aspect of a thriller? . The Hunting Party’s premise sounds a lot like The Guest List - rich people go to a remote location where someone is dead and you don’t know who it is or who killed them. I was suspicious at how close these books felt to each other but the twists were definitely different. There were other things that really bothered me about this book, though. The “friends” don’t really seem like they ever could have been actual friends and participate in middle-school bullying and drama that doesn’t seem realistic for 30-somethings. There were also aspects of the twist that just didn’t sit well with me and one character particularly did something that just made absolutely zero sense.
