Design Spaces: Restaurants/Pubs- Part 1.

When Farah and Dhaval Design Studio got the brief from Nikhil Barua of The Humming Tree, the first thing they were told was that the place was not to be polished, stylish or uppity. Nikhil wanted the venue to have a timeless appeal with good food, great music and drinks. A  place where the patron felt at home; a place where  customers could walk in stilettos, flip-flops or sneakers and still feel comfortable in the surroundings. 

Humming Tree is many things. It is a bar. It is a restaurant. It is a coffee place, a snack place and a ‘lets-get-a-glass-of-wine kinda place. But, most importantly, it is a music venue humming to the sound of music. Since the place was going to be a platform for upcoming music bands and sound would determine design, the inspiration for this place became experimental and industrial. Spread over 5300 sft, The Humming Tree interiors are striking with the predominant use of metal, cement and bricks.

We take a peek inside.

The entrance is an oxidized metal riveted door with a large circular peephole. As you enter, floor to ceiling suspend industrials chains stop you in your tracks and slowly allow you to absorb the elements of the place piece by piece through their equal intervals.

The entire shell is finished in an burnt rust cement material with their logo in the same material right above the bar wall. Large old school bulbs diverge from the center and hang down at different levels.Exposed AC ducts meander along the sound-proofed grey ceiling and assign an almost unfinished and restored quality to the space.

Restored bar tables and stools made from old bicycles sit on a grey concrete floor strewn across the space with posters and mirrors spread all over the adjacent wall.

The raised enclosure for music performance is where many upcoming bands  and musicians perform routinely. The acoustics is state of the art; all walls and windows are sound proof to keep the noise contained as the neighborhood is also very residential.

The more casual space with couches and tables for two by large fixed windows occupies one corner of the space. Natural light streams in gently making it fit for a quick day time work meeting or casual catch up adda.  A large milk cistern lamp brings in a bit of quirkiness. The dense foliage form the perfect backdrop.

The darker space is apt for evenings and late night music events. Soft lighting adds to the mood.

The female bathroom walls are finished in wine coloured cement and are adorned with a bright triptych of mirrors and industrial hanging lights.

The male bathroom walls are blue with simple wooden framed mirrors. The bathroom has  industrial hanging lights and is fraught with playful posters to entertain as you go about your business!

The terrace is filled with distressed furniture including distressed seating, mirrors and planters.

A distressed metal bench sits with a solitary planter to one side and the hanging distressed "faux" window with hanging flowers above .

The terrace also houses the office room. The uneven and rustic look of the wall of the terrace with a distressed door, planters, hanging lanterns and an outdoor chair complement the look.
