Question 2
Race is defined as a group of people identified as distinct from other groups because of supposed physical or genetic traits shared by the group. Our system of racial classification includes racial groups such as Indian, Asian, Black, White, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic/Latino. The information in the film challenges our systems norms. We believe that we are all different based off of these racial backgrounds whereas the film shows us that we shouldn’t. The film states that are ancestors all came from the same place (Africa). This meaning that technically we all come from the same race because we all have connecting genetic traits leading back to Africa.
In my opinion the film challenges just as much as it reinforces stereotypes of Africa & africans. One popular stereotype is that all Africans are dark skinned. The film clearly challenges this stereotype explaining the reasoning for different shades and skin tones. Depending on where your ancestors migrated and the climate and weather conditions created variations of skin colors. Another stereotype is that Africa is always hot. The film reinforces this stereotype describing how it is close to the equator. They explained that they get many diseases such as malaria because of the temperatures.

                                    The Human Family Tree Essay
Use the film’s story of Dave’s genetic lineage to argue for or against the Out of Africa theory.
The film, “The Human Family Tree”, was about Spencer Wells, an American Anthropologist, trying to test the theory that all people originated from Africa, coming from scientific Adam and Eve. To collect data, Wells and a research group went to a festival in Queens, New York. A festival with the attendance of every race that lived in the area. Dave, one of the participants in the study, was introduced as someone who’s genetic lineage contains DNA that his ancestors are of European decent. Although Dave sees himself as African American, he knows that his ancestors are from Tajikistan, an area in central Asia. This is not uncommon seeing how 50% of all European men have this same lineage.  Dave’s lineage supports the “out of Africa” theory.
What is the “out of Africa” theory? The “out of Africa” theory is when a group of people migrate to different areas of the world. It explains that everyone originated in Africa but due to weather changes - they were forced to disperse to different parts of the world. When the climate started to change and the ice age begun, this caused people to move farther away from their home. This theory explains why we are what we are today and explains the history of the different races. People can find out a lot about their unknown history by applying the “out of Africa” theory to their conversations.
