Fieldwork Assignment #11
When interviewing Aaliyah Dunstan on her experience being an immigrant from Jamaica, she brought up an abundance of interesting points on the difference between the two countries. Aaliyah turned 19 this year and spoke on how her and her family immigrated from Jamaica 11 years ago. When asked how Gender roles differ from Jamaica to America, she had a lot to say. “Gender roles in the past and present have changed a great amount, she started. In the 1960s there was a very different outlook on the equality between men and women. Even though black women were looked down upon, white women were also further down than men such as, women were only supposed to Cook, clean, and take care of their kids. As for men, they were supposed to bring money into the house and help support the family. Today, there are still inequalities with both men and women, but the value of women has gone up a great amount. Women are allowed to do almost everything a man can do such as joining the military, becoming pilots, and most important Equal wages with jobs. Overall, I believe that gender roles have changed greatly with equality, but still could use some work”. Her answer seemed genuine and I could see a lot of the points that she was making. “What are the expectations of members of the second generation, and how do their lives differ from those of their immigrant parents?” was my next question. She answered swiftly; “The expectation between my mom and I aren’t very different. Her expectation moving from Jamaica was the "American dream". Moving here at the age of 7 the "American Dream" for her or anyone was having a better education and fulfilling my dreams of becoming what I wanted to be in life. My expectations for myself is getting a good education to further help my mom and make her hard work pay off.”

In Class Assignment - 4/24 Economic Justice
There are many economic injustice in the world we live in today one of the biggest reason is because the whole world is not developing at the same time. Marx’s concepts of uneven development refers to the unequal distribution of people resources and wealth, there are many places in this world that are not fortunate enough to have resource to generate income. With that being said, another way we can achieve economic justice is by, not taking from others to better explain people in todays society like to rob peter to pay Paul. Which means you take from one person just to give to another. If everyone in society equally give or share and not take from one another, economic justice will be realistic. Also an idea to achieve economic justice we can start by giving everyone the same opportunities. Some are born into poverty and others are born into wealth. Both don't have the same opportunities, the one in poverty has to work harder than the one in wealth. If both had the same resources one wouldn't be the better choice, both would be at the same level. Having the same skill level as the other you both will have the same opportunities and one wouldn't be over looked.

Interview Analysis
In today’s society it seems as if there’s always a new topic questioned. One of the most recent things to come to light has been gender roles and how the differ to people. Everyone has their assumptions of a “gender norm”, but where does that “norm” come from? Society programs people to assume that the sex of a person entails them to do certain things and live their lives a certain way.
One of the most asked questions in the interviews I watched was “how you describe yourself?” In the interview of Chris, he described himself as a human being he’s one of the only people that I watched that did not pick a side of male or female. This is different to me, I always heard or seen people claim a side because that’s how they want people to see them. He might not care what others see him as, if he knows who he is, is probably what matters the most to him. We need more people with this mindset because people get to fixated on being accepted by society, that they do things that aren’t true to themselves.
Bad Habits are hard to break when you been doing them for so long. The way we word things plays a big role in how people look at us, but I think we do it unknowingly. Elias Johnson says that “gender does play a part in a relationship because, the male is supposed to act a certain way to a female and the female is supposed to act a certain way to the male, the female shouldn’t be the one controlling everything, when the male is supposed to be the head.” Patriarchy is something that most people grew up being taught and living in it, nothing is wrong with this way of thinking. With the speed of how each generation is bringing light on unspoken about topics, this way of living and thinking shouldn’t be used as a norm anymore. So many people are challenging stereotypes and doing things you would have never thought of, as the generation evolve so should the way we think and live.
In Imani interview she claims that “gender roles do exist but that they probably shouldn’t but it’s the way society is and how we grew up in it, we don’t have anything to do with it”. Yes, this is what we grew up in, but we don’t have to let it stay this way. This generation is the generation of change, so much has happened for the LGBQT community over these past couple of years, the feel comfortable with coming out, talking about their stories, and standing up for their rights. We have the power, now we must put that power into action.
I love listening to what others thing about different topics. On this topic everyone blames society, and that’s fine because that’s where it starts, but we allowed it to get like this. Change is among us. This Generation is so open minded, and accepting, I think the golden rule is finally kicking in, “always treat people how you want to be treated”.

Classwork Gender Stereotypes
men are dominant in relationships
women are supposed to rely on a man and not be authoritative
if men express emotions then the aren't a man
outspoken women are seen as troublemakers
women are smarter than men
Society has had a negative impact on me. Its hard not to believe what is in the media that your exposed too everyday. My parents are one of the main reasons i am the way i am, they taught me the “right way” to think and accept people for who they are. Society shows that men have to do that and women have to do this. My parents showed me how to be independent, and do for myself. Also showed me that its okay for men to have emotions and all that good stuff. They told me to go against the stereotypes and to challenge them whenever i get a chance to. Yes, in the back of my head i do judge people subconsciously, but everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as no one is being disrespected and in harm.

Fieldwork Assignment # 6
Colonialism- In this picture, all these places wanted to take Africans from their home, and make it something that it wasn't. By bringing in their culture and making the people change, forcing a new religion, changing the way the did things. Taking control.
Hypo-descent - Here is Homer Plessy. He is 7/8th white and 1/8th black. Plessy was kicked off and all white train cart in 1892, because he was breaking a law of separate but equal law. Even though Plessy’s phenotype is white, he is considered black because of the “one drop rule”, which makes him a hypo-descent. Plessy wanted to challenge the segregation laws.
Racial Micro-aggressions- This happens to everyone, society teaches us that everybody fits into certain boxes. This creates images that we look for, so when the person doesn't fit the image society gave us we start to question them, or criticize them for not being what we think they should be.

The Human Family Tree Essay
Use the film’s story of Dave’s genetic lineage to argue for or against the Out of Africa theory.
The film, “The Human Family Tree”, was about Spencer Wells, an American Anthropologist, trying to test the theory that all people originated from Africa, coming from scientific Adam and Eve. To collect data, Wells and a research group went to a festival in Queens, New York. A festival with the attendance of every race that lived in the area. Dave, one of the participants in the study, was introduced as someone who’s genetic lineage contains DNA that his ancestors are of European decent. Although Dave sees himself as African American, he knows that his ancestors are from Tajikistan, an area in central Asia. This is not uncommon seeing how 50% of all European men have this same lineage. Dave’s lineage supports the “out of Africa” theory.
What is the “out of Africa” theory? The “out of Africa” theory is when a group of people migrate to different areas of the world. It explains that everyone originated in Africa but due to weather changes - they were forced to disperse to different parts of the world. When the climate started to change and the ice age begun, this caused people to move farther away from their home. This theory explains why we are what we are today and explains the history of the different races. People can find out a lot about their unknown history by applying the “out of Africa” theory to their conversations.
