Well, it's finally done. The story idea for The Queen of Swords has been in my head since 2013, and I just finished the second draft of the novel. The Queen of Swords is my take on the Fools Journey from Tarot. This book has taken me five years to write and has been with me for eleven years. That's a long time. At 100,800 words and 322 pages, I've told my tale, and I am so proud of what I've created. In crafting my tarot deck, I aim to honor the timeless Rider-Waite Tarot deck, while infusing it with my personal twist. Inspired by its classic symbolism and imagery, I sought to imbue each card with my own aesthetic preferences, subject matter, and color palette. Additionally, I wanted to incorporate Armenian elements into select cards, adding a touch of my culture to make the deck even more meaningful to me. Some cards closely resemble the original, while others take on a completely different interpretation.

Let me introduce you to the first card of my tarot deck: the Fool! 🍄

In this design, I’ve captured the essence of innocence and exploration, embodying the spirit of a journey just beginning. As the Fool steps onto the path, filled with wonder, they carry the promise of new beginnings and endless potential. Drawing inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, I envisioned the Fool traversing a whimsical woodland scene, evoking a sense of curiosity and adventure. In my rendition, the Fool is not accompanied by the traditional loyal canine companion. Instead, they are joined by a wise and transformative caterpillar, symbolizing growth and the wisdom found in embracing change. It’s a voyage of self-discovery, where the Fool discovers that true magic lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself.

Card of the Week: The Wheel of Fortune

What does it mean?

The wheel of fortune is my favorite card in Tarot. It’s symbolizes change, life cycles, good fortune, and the beginning of something new. It reminds us that nothing can stay the same and that the universe has its own plan. Sometimes we must let the wheel of life spin freely, allowing it to take us wherever we must go. You cannot control the wheel, the same way you cannot control the universe. Every path you take, every interaction, every heartbreak, every decision you make, every experience you can have has been laid out for you. Your only choice now is to trust the universe.

Can it truly bring good luck?

This is up to the reader too decide. But in my personal opinion the wheel brings what we need most in life. The wheel brings change, opportunities, and a new perspective on what is and has been. I think the wheel brings the change we desperately need, and that in itself is lucky. We are lucky to live in a universe that is experiencing itself while we are experiencing it. We are lucky to learn, grow, and change beside our fellow humans. There is something magical in that.

Can the wheel bring bad fortune?

Yes and no. The wheel can bring uncomfortable change, it can bring a change that we are not quite ready for, and when the wheel of life begins to spin we cannot expect it to be comfortable. But sometimes living in our comfortability is the bad luck, being stagnant is scarier than facing the difficulties of change. When this card appears we must ask ourselves, am I where I am supposed to be? Am I making decisions that align with my higher self?

How do we move forward?

After drawing a card like this it is vital to listen to the message the universe is offering to us. In order to fully except this card for what it truly is, we must understand that change is our only option. you can resist the change that the universe has bestowed upon you, but at the end of the day that change will still remain. The only thing we control is the way that we react and move forward.  In order to fully live the truth of the wheel we must first understand that the wheel has brought us to the place that we are, and it will take us to the place that we need to be. It is both our darkest and our brightest moments. Reflecting every bad decision you’ve made, and every good one. We must experience all of it in order to understand why we are here. We must feel the pain, guilt, shame, anger, and sadness that comes with being alive, in order to feel the true happiness of the wheel. The wheel of life will not always be pleasant, and at times we will be thrown into the unknown, unsure of what is next. Let this happen. You learn the most about yourself when you step into the unknown.

How about we hit the ground running by discussing what the Fool card means in tarot?

- As the first card of the major arcana, the Fool sets the tone of curiosity, the unknown, and going with the flow of life. In this depiction of the Fool card, I am reminded of what it feels to be a freshman in high school again. The feeling of fresh starts and new beginnings is the energy I’m getting. When first entering high school, no one really knows what to expect. A lot of the friends you’ve had from middle school may not turn out to be the same people you’d last seen two and a half months ago. The journey that the Fool takes is that of a high school student, going through different phases and emotions along the way.

It holds the number zero so it has infinite potential

The card depicts a youthful alien walking on rocky terrain with their shoelaces untied. They don’t seem to care that they could trip up at any moment and choose to focus on their journey and scenery around them. They have a backpack that contains everything they need (which isn’t much) They have many eyes but not all of them can see. The mountain behind them represents the challenges yet to come

I can’t believe it’s already time again for #artvsartist to be making the rounds. — Though my work is typically drawn with only a red and blue double-ended pencil, a golden light of hopefulness suddenly pervades my more recent compositions in washes of yellow gouache, contrasting voids of black ink. The result is a softer and dreamier take on my usual themes of trauma and connection, sewn lovingly with red ribbons to both myths and mental wellness practices. .
