A Means to an End is a phrase that describes a thing that is not valued or important in itself but is useful in achieving an aim or something done only to produce a desired result. While most of my art pieces are full of intentional (if not always obvious) objects that represent or symbolize a component in the metaphor, message or story I aim to convey....there are times that the objects simply fit the space I am filling. I've also been asked if I start with an idea or if the idea comes to me in the process. The answer is yes to both scenarios. I may know exactly what I am making and why, and other times I figure it out along the way. In this case I had the title first. Next I picked up this rusted out muffin tin that fit flawlessly into a perfectly sized wine crate. The rest fell into its rightful place. The end result was included in El Final De Una Era, the final exhibition in June of 2019 at San Francisco's legendary "Wonderland SF" gallery (@wonderlandsf) before beloved owner and curator @irenehfeiks closed the doors one last time to take on new adventures in the artworld. It was a bitter sweet show and I was proud to be counted as one of her hundreds of devoted artists that she affectionately calls her art family. Another Black leader has passed and is now an ancestor. Colin Powell was a distinguished and trailblazing professional soldier whose career took him from combat duty in Vietnam to becoming the first Black national security adviser during the end of Ronald Reagan's presidency and the youngest and first African American chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President George H.W. Bush. His national popularity soared in the aftermath of the US-led coalition victory during the Gulf War, and for a time in the mid-90s, he was considered a leading contender to become the first Black President of the United States. George Bush said in a statement Monday that Powell was "a great public servant" who was "such a favorite of Presidents that he earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- twice. He was highly respected at home and abroad. And most important, Colin was a family man and a friend." Though Powell never mounted a White House bid, when he was sworn in as Bush's secretary of state in 2001, he became the highest-ranking Black public official to date in the country, standing fourth in the presidential line of succession. "I think it shows to the world what is possible in this country," Powell said of his history-making nomination during his Senate confirmation hearing. "It shows to the world that: Follow our model, and over a period of time from our beginning, if you believe in the values that espouse, you can see things as miraculous as me sitting before you to receive your approval." These are just SOME of the many reasons I will always love & be grateful for the @blacktribbles They’ve given me some of the best years of my life and here are a few. 1. Winning our 2nd Cammy Award for our hit #webseries #TribblesAfterDark (on YouTube) 2. Filming for our webseries. Being able to put these producer chops to use and actually get a feel for what I want in life. And finding out I got some skill when I apply myself. Filming on set were some of the MOST BEAUTIFUL moments I’ve ever had. 3. That time we were hit up by the @phillyinquirer for a #geek & #afrofuturism spread. They wanted the best and they got the best. 4. The fulfillment of our first ever @respectpodfest being able to provide a platform for women #podcasters (hopefully more to come in the future🤞🏾) 5. DnD! Omfg what fun this was. Dressed up, doing the most, creating content, and loving every minute of it. 6. The time we called on the help of the @artschooldropouts to film some action scenes. Was incredibly thrilling being an amateur action star for the day. DEFINITELY more to come 7. The photoshoot that shifted culture. Can’t tell me this ain’t hot. We’re flyest crew in the deepest regions of space. (Still need a album name tho. Drop some in the comments) 8. Finding my tribe and being able to bring them along for the ride. Not all of my friends are shown but know I love em all. This ATL trip to @momocon was one for the history books. It was one of the moments where I understood the DEPTH of how much REPRESENTATION MATTERS! 9. WE ARE WORLD FUCKING RECORD HOLDERS! FOREVER ETCHED IN HISTORY 💪🏾💪🏾 10. Empress Jazmine, I know you’re still here physically but, I know you're fading fast. How do you begin to process the loss is 19 years? How will I ever find another feline like you? You are the epitome of "cat", even worse in your advanced age. Most of your life we assumed you were hard of hearing, your selective hearing was just that good. Staying out all night hunting anything and everything, sleeping all day. You have outlived family, friends and other pets, we frequently joke that you're older than my niece who starts college in the fall. You have been with me since I was seven years old and I’ve been with you since you were six weeks old. I first met you in our backyard, long before the sunroom, middle school, Bear and even longer before Tiger and Hera. You were the first animal to teach me what true and unconditional love was. You’ve taught all of our dogs that cats are not to be trifled with, ruling the house with Iron Claws. You have always slept in my room, on my bed, on your own pillow, right by my head, and frequently on me, because obviously, Empress’ Choice. I am certain that I will always love you, I will constantly be looking for your bright green eyes in every other cat I meet... Which is not fair, you’re irreplaceable. Your coat and color alone was the envy of the neighborhood. You will always be my first love, you taught me how to love animals, you’ve turned me into the animal lover I am today.
