For those too young & don’t remember #newspapers or some of the stories that found its way into these publications. #Hiphoplegends oftentimes were in these tabloids 🗞 i recently came across a few #newspaperclippings / articles where #lategreatrappers #raplegends @2pac & @EazyE / @nwa.4l1fe - where discussed, examined & the ‘sorted’ details of alleged/or/actual rape took place with @2.pacshakur & @EazyEOG contracted the #hivvirus & ultimately saw an early demise, death from #AIDS #hivaids. These stories made the @NewYorkPost & the @NewYorkDailyNews although these were WestCoastRappers. The news media was very different then, in the 90s. Believe it or not THERE WAS NO SOCIAL MEDIA!!! So television, radio,!magazines & newspapers & word of mouth 👄 was the only way of spreading news/information. DBT-The Dirty South

How I end up choosing an album to listen to is seemingly random.  While searching for Richard Swift, I couldn’t remember his last name and all I could think of was Richard Emanuel.  That was all the trigger I needed to have track 7-Danko/Manuel stuck in my head an entire day.

After playing that song to exercise the earworm, I decided to play the album front to back, while creating this site.  Streaming, through google play, to my over the ear headphones.

I’ve seen DBT a few times, all in the post-Isbell-era. Always a dynamic show, Patterson Hood pours every ounce of himself into the performance.  They don’t play from this album much, but as an album opener and also a live performance, “Where the Devil Don’t Stay” is one of my favorites.

Clocking in at 70 minutes, this one is a definite commitment to listen straight through.  If you can spare it, and are looking for detailed story telling over heavy guitar riffs, you’ll be glad you did.

I’ve listened to this album many times, each time I pick up a bit more from each song, each character.  The mix of Cooley, Isbell and Hood gives slightly different flavors and points of view within the same overall musical framework. Although Isbell (as history would prove) is a bit of the odd man out - doesn’t seem to have the same edge or grit as the others.

None of these are really sit and strum alone except probably Goddamn Lonely Love, the Isbell closer to the album - the only one I regularly pick around on. 

The song that has stuck with me after this listen is “Daddy’s Cup” with Cooley singing lead.  That’s the beauty of the digital age. Once I’m through I can come right back to it without damaging the vinyl!
