🌟 BOOK REVIEW🌟 🌟 💫 Tara M. Stringfellow's debut "Memphis" gives you an insight into the city with a rich cultural history, while subtly highlighting the progression of African American history through the eyes of 3 generations of North Family and 5 strong female protagonists, across 7 decades. The book though relevant is not for casual reading- the 3 generations are connected at their core through violence- the grandmother, Hazel, having lost her husband shortly after becoming the first black detective in the historic black neighborhood of Douglas. Hazel's daughter Mariam is a domestic abuse survivor, who escapes trying to give her daughters a life that she and black women in the past deserved but never got. The history and present are told through the eyes of 10-year-old Joan, who represents the resilience of the 3 generations, as she survives her share of abuse to find relief in her art and paintbrush. As does August, Mariam's sister, who sees her only son suffer the consequences of his actions- and finds healing in her music and hair salon. The confidence Mya, Joan's sister, shows in standing up for her sister or vulnerability after hearing of her father's loss, just sums up the plethora of emotions the author has packed in this 252-page pocket dynamite. The back-and-forth narrative did get a tad confusing at times, but the author smartly encompasses historical events- from World War II to the death of black girls in Birmingham Alabama in 1963-1968 assassination of Dr Martin Luther King to the 9/11 Pentagon bombings- and this does help in associating the progression of the story. This was a powerful story and when Joan eventually succeeds in achieving her dreams, you sense the sweet satisfaction which you always want when closing a book. I received an advanced reader copy of Dear Edward from The Dial Press/Random House Publishing Group via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano is a story about navigating grief. Twelve year old Edward and his family are moving from New York City to California. A moving company is transferring their belongings, while Edward, his older brother, Jordan, and his parents fly across the country. However, something goes terribly wrong and Edward is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Over the next few years, Edward comes to terms with his new reality and this is his story. I loved this book and enduring the roller coaster of life with Edward. The author did a great job of making all of the characters authentic with relatable issues. If you’re on the hunt for a book with all the feels, pick up Dear Edward, available today, Monday, January 6, 2020. #currentlyreading "Dear Edward" by @annnapolitano. I woke up at 6AM ready to start this book. And yes, I stayed up late finishing up "Midnight Beauties." The ARC says the release date is 1.14, but it's actually being released next week. The book tour starts in NYC next week. I like the book already, even though I know this is a tragedy. I just love her writing style. To be continued... Thank you to @thedialpress and @penguinrandomhouse for the ARC. I guess they were so excited about the book, they gave me two at BEA. 😳 https://www.instagram.com/p/B6vW97FgTjT/?igshid=18h7mb41s7dm6

There's so much I want to say about the Great Brain series, which I was OBSESSED with as a kid and reread countless times, but IG is really more of a visual medium. So I'll just tell you that John D. Fitzgerald's series of books based loosely on his own childhood are set in Utah between 1896 and 1898, and revolve mostly around the exploits and mischief of his clever, slightly amoral brother Tom, nicknamed "The Great Brain". Honestly, though, every character in these stories, illustrated by Mercer Mayer, and published from 1967-1976 (with the exception of the posthumously published "The Great Brain Is Back, 1995, illustrated by Diane deGroat) is beautifully three-dimensional and worth getting to know. Check out the Wikipedia entry for The Great Brain for lots more info!! ⏺ ⏺ ⏺ #thegreatbrain #johndfitzgerald #mercermayer @mercer_mayer @degroat1788 @thedialpress @randomhousekids #bookseries #childrensbookseries #chapterbooks #booknerdigans #booknerd #childhoodunplugged #historicalfiction #historyforkids #bibliophile #bookcollection #bookrecommendation #mustread #kidsbookslove #kidsbookstagram #whattoread #readtoyourkids #readaloudrevival #readingtogether #readingismagic #kidsbookshelf #bestofbookworms #kidsbookreview #vintagekidsbooks #vintagechildrensbooks #yearlingbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/BzYtuTgnO2l/?igshid=1c1zxmkoe3hml

My Name is Venus Black Heather Lloyd
MY RATING ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️▫️ PUBLISHER The Dial Press PUBLISHED February 27, 2018
A grabbing and poignant family drama about love, forgiveness, redemption and moving on.
SUMMARY Venus Black is 13-years-old, a normal teenager, and a good student with a love for astronomy. But she commits a shocking crime that tears her family apart and puts them all in the media spotlight. Venus refuses to talk about what happened and why, other than to blame her mother. She is ultimately sent to prison. Shortly after her arrest, Venus’s little brother Leo who is developmentally disabled also goes missing. When Venus is released from prison at 19, and she starts over in Seattle with a new identity. She rents a room, gets a job as a waitress and helps take care of her landlord’s nine-year-old precocious niece, Piper, who makes Venus think about Leo. She misses Leo tremendously and is frustrated by not knowing whether he is dead or alive. Venus’s mother reaches out to Venus to make amends for events leading up to the crime, but Venus refuses to forgive her mother for her lack of support and her inability to find Leo. When new information about Leo’s disappearance comes to light the two must put aside differences to extend the search.
REVIEW My Name is Venus Black is an engaging chronicle of a family torn apart by a shocking crime and it’s aftermath. Venus, with her wild black curly hair and astute mind is endearing, as are all of the younger characters in this captivating story. Heather Lloyd has skillfully crafted a poignant, thoughtful and moving story that grabs your attention from the beginning—in the police station. With superb writing, and unique characters that propel the narrative, this gem of a debut novel is bound to entertain young and old alike.
Thanks to LibraryThing, The Dial Press and Heather Lloyd for an advance reading copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
