LYDIA LUNCH
“New York singer and poet Lydia Lunch worked and collaborated with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Sonic Youth, and many others over the years. A key member of New York’s no wave movement in the early-1980s, Lydia Lunch (born Lydia Koch) left an abusive home in Rochester, New York, became part of the punk scene at an early age, and began working as a waitress at CBGB. She formed her first band, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, with notoriously confrontational saxophone player James Chance and drummer Bradley Field to create a challenging wall of noise. Chance later left to found James Chance and the Contortions (later James White and the Blacks), while Lunch brought in various bass players to play music she labeled no wave. The band barely recorded, but managed to get several tracks included on the scene-defining No New York compilation.
In 1980, Lunch disbanded the Jerks and started a solo career with her pseudo jazz album Queen of Siam. She returned to her own abrasive form with the formation of 8 Eyed Spy, along with drummer Jim Sclavunos (later a member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds) and bassist George Scott, who would die of a heroin overdose before the band became popular. Lunch went on to collaborate with a dizzying array of musicians and writers, including Nick Cave, Michael Gira (of the Swans), Jim Thirwell (Foetus), Sonic Youth, Henry Rollins, and Exene Cervenka of X, as well as appear in the films of Richard Kern and in Asia Argento’s The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things (2004). For the past several decades, Lunch concentrated mostly on writing and spoken word, in which her emotionally naked performances were extremely challenging and difficult to witness, as was the point.”
