Creative Coffee Week 2023 – By Nicole Terblanche
Creative Coffee Week 2023 – By Nicole Terblanche. A subjective report back on Creative Coffee Week 2023. #creativecoffeeweek #thecoffeemag #durban #sacoffeeevent
Creative Coffee Week was the highlight of the year for me. It generally is, even though I haven’t been there in the flesh since 2019. I drank copious amounts of coffee, white hot chocolate, not enough water, a few cups of gelato (yes, the real Italian one) and ate very little veggies. It was a mischievous time for me, time to play and learn and mingle, which is what I do best. Coffee truly is…

Once upon a time ago I started a journey to explore the tragedy unfolding before our eyes and to witness first hand the destruction of deforestation and unsustainable tree harvesting. The tragedy is that this with power often do nothing and those without the knowledge don't know any better. Out of this the Hope of the African Tree Project was born. And still in its infancy I long for the adventures and driving on the roads with no names. Once again I reminisce about the journey of 23000km in 90 days around Southern and Eastern Africa, knowing I have merely scratched the surface. Thank you to those that supported me and still do. #rocksolidindustries #dunlop #friendship #friends #namibia #mozambique #botswana #zambia #tanzania #kenya #swaziland #southafrica #adventure #roadtrip #expedition #africa @journeysdiscoveringafrica @african_portraits @africanheritage_ @forestelephantfoundation @rainforestalliance @thecoffeemag @instagram_sa @meetsouthafrica @instagram @visitsouthafrica

Brooklyn Bound
For TheCoffeeMag
Tumblr media
[The playlist for this post is accessed by pressing play on that ExFM player on the bottom right of your screen]
The need for coffee after a sixteen hour flight pretty much comes second only to breathing, and so after dropping our bags in our Franklin Street apartment we walked across the street into a place where people in flannel check shirts and faded black skinny's were lining up to order Stumptown cappuccinos from someone who clearly understood tamping, extracting and the concept of micro-foam. The Brooklyn Label it was named, all coats and beanies and MacBooks, with Fleet Foxes playing in the background. We immediately de-stressed and settled into our first brunch, comprising of Bloody Marys, flapjack stacks with real maple syrup, home fries and poached eggs, and of course endless home-brew coffee.
Greenpoint is the little suburb at the extreme north west of Brooklyn, a quieter extension of Williamsburg, which lies to the south. The roads are lined with apple blossom trees, mostly in front of beautiful old Dutch-style row houses and three story apartments. Coffee shops and restaurants frequent the bottom floor of many of these buildings, and each seems to carry a unique feel, there are no chain restaurants or big take-aways in the area. As one walks south one gets to the heart of Williamsburg, where the coffee shops, record stores and beer halls replace the houses, and Driggs, Bedford, Berry and Wythe reveal one of the strongholds of coffee culture. In this setting it is so natural, and organic. Every cross street you pass reveals a glimpse of the East River and the Manhattan skyline. It doesn't feel as if anyone here is intimidated by the proximity to this famous skyline, there is rather the feeling of knowing something others don't. The balance of working or studying in the city but then escaping to this haven of music and food and coffee and culture where the buildings are just high enough that the view from the rooftops bars gives the perfect setting to settle into a craft beer and watch the sun disappear behind the Empire State.
Our chosen rooftop bar, Berry Park, exemplified this. The entire rooftop a glass-top-and-sided terrace with picnic tables and a bar with at least ten craft beers, whilst downstairs a fire and cozy booths, and apparently often live music, for after the sun went down. Each street offers record stores, craft coffee, craft beer on tap, wine bars (where all produce is new york state origin), barbers that have various moustache and beard styling options on the price list, clothes shops and restaurants with food to suit a variety of tastes. One particular example is Rosamunde Sausage Grill, where the concept is simply sausages made in the restaurant and craft beer. But this means twenty craft beers on tap. Fancy a Belgium Tripel and a bratwurst? How about a Brooklyn Lager, brewed a couple of streets up, and a Russian accompanied by steak frites. I don't know how the locals stay so beautiful, at least enough to fit into the jeans.
On Sunday things become particularly fantastic, as Bedford Avenue becomes home to little street carts and everyone is out grabbing some brunch and then its on to McCarren Park, to throw a ball around, or chill on the lawns with a book, possibly just to cover your eyes with. The people in New York, and certainly this part of Brooklyn, really get out and use their city. After our third excellent brunch in as many days, this time with Mimosa's, we walked to East River Park to sit on the bench facing the city, feet up and soak up the sunlight. We then happened upon Toby's, and as I walked in and heard the music (I think it was Delta Spirit), and saw the people, I could have been in the The Factory Cafe or Origin, such is the universal family of coffee. I had one of the more special double cappuccinos in a normal cup I've had in my life, and we moved on.  We headed to Peter Pan's for doughnuts, grabbed a six-pack of apple cider from a polish grocer on Manhattan Avenue and headed back to the apartment to chill, some with a paper, and some Netflix series.
I think one of the most satisfying aspects I found in this dreamy suburb was a feeling of home. Now this is not to say there aren't some significant departures from this comparison, but I found my little suburb of Glenwood in eThekwini mirrors this area of Brooklyn in many ways. The abundance of tree-lined streets and parks, being a centered around coffee-engrained culture (enough to have two roasteries), being a mishmash of students, lecturers, artists, business people and families, having some great places to eat and drink. Being a place where diversity can be explored. It makes me hopeful that this environment may exist in many other places.
Brooklyn, it seems, has been the origin of a lot of the culture we are influenced by today. At the time we visited (earlier this year) I was listening to a lot of The National, and the Local Natives. The National are based in Brooklyn, and Hummingbird was recorded in Brooklyn (actually in Aaron Dessner of The National’s studio), so it makes sense I was in a Brooklyn state of mind. Brooklyn is a huge borough, as much home to hip-hop as to the coffee-stained hipsters. Even the more affluent find a home there as New York’s cycle of the rich following the artists continues, and areas like Park Slope and Greenpoint are celebrated in series such as Bored To Death and Girls. Brooklyn’s influence on music has been, and continues to be significant. Artists such as Notorious B.I.G, The National, Grizzly Bear, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mos Def, Jay Z, The Drums, MGMT, Lou Reed, Beastie Boys and obviously Cyprus Hill, are just some examples of the rich and diverse musical heritage of Brooklyn. An epicentre of all forms of culture and art, possibly enhanced by the diversity and tension that comes from so many different groups existing together.
Here is a playlist of Brooklyn-related bands, or Brooklyn-inspired songs, that provides insight into what I found there:
Woodkid – Brooklyn
The Drums – Days
Grizzly Bear – Yet Again
Fleet Foxes – It Ain’t Me Babe (Bob Dylan Cover)
The National – Geese of Beverly Road
Delta Spirit – Bushwick Blues
Dirty Projectors – Gun Has No Trigger
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
Black Keys – Brooklyn Bound
Vampire Weekend – Diane Young
Blakroc – Ain’t Nothing Like You (Hoochie Coo)
MGMT – Time To Pretend
Jay Z Feat. Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind
Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
Lou Reed – Coney Island Baby

Most established coffee farms have a nursery in which to raise seedlings before planting them out on the farm for production. The coffee beans are first planted in rich soil, and will soon germinate. The bean itself is then lifted out of the ground by the developing shoot, And at this stage they are often called “soldiers”. They look strangely like a roasted coffee bean has been attached to the top of A thin green stem. Not long after this, the bean burst open to reveal the first leaves. Coffee plants grow quickly and after 6 to 12 months they can be moved from the nursery into production. Coffee growing requires the investment of not only money, but also time. A coffee farmer will usually have to wait three years for a newly planted tree to fruit properly. #coffee #coffeelover #coffeetime #coffeeshop #coffeeeducation #coffeetree #coffeetrees #coffeeseedling @shaunthecoffeeguy @sa_coffee_association @thecoffeemag @coffeequip @skylinecoffeeza @cupocafecoffeebar @specialtycoffeeassociation @specialty_coffee_exchange @wcoffeeevents @wayne_burrows @liquidconcepts @milklabsouthafrica @mini_zeus_ @zappertm (at Pretoria, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/B99tQvLJ-mq/?igshid=wy4uh6uu4urf

In a world of coffee it's hard not to say no. On the slopes of Kilimanjaro coffee bean farmers range from large scale commercial to small scale subsistence farmers that sell their crop for cash. But as climate change begins to threaten the industry more every year it's important to realize that the end user has a powerful position, put using cups that can be reused or recycled to reduce the impact of climate change. Coffee makes the world for round and without a great coffee fewer great stories would be told. #coffee #hopeoftheafricantree #kilimanjaro #farming #bean #tanzania #arabica #barista #caffeine #climatechange #recycling #economy #story #adventure #yourshotphotographer #natgeotravel #yourshot #natgeoyourshot #photography #dronephotography #dronestagram #drone #dji #africa #coffeetime #exploringcoffee @alternativebrewing @wonderland_sa @thecoffeemag @discover.your.planet @picturesouthafrica @afrikainpictures @africanheritage_ @weareafrica @origincoffeesa #scienceofcoffee (at Mount Kilimanjaro)
