This is it! This is absolutely it! And it's even grimmer than I remember!

I googled the story and found that it appears in the anthology Bluebloods collected by David Drake which is definitely where I read it -- I used to own this book so that's where I came across it. (This book also features Drake's own creepy horror story The Red Leer, which I also highly recommend!)

I have one of those robot vacuums but there's a mirror in the house low enough to the ground that the lidar scanner can see a nonexistent room in the reflection so on the navigation map it's generated I have a room that doesn't exist that I have to forbid the vacuum from entering.

I moved to a village and the house where I live is always very noisy. Constantly. 90% of the time is birds, lots of birds of different types. Some car, someone doing some manual work, some children playing outside.

It is noisier than my flat in Madrid, but it is a different kind of noise and it doesn't tire me.

When people move to villages and expect silence and find out there are animals making noise, what were they expecting? A silent place is a dead place. Even convents in a faraway place have noises.

I'm Mohammed Jamal Abu Amona, a 30-year-old, teacher from Gaza. With a broken heart, I am reaching out to you today, seeking your assistance, support, help and sympath, to move forward and rebuild my life after losing everything I owned during these miserable times in war. Unfortunately, we have been forced to leave our home many times, searching for safety and stability. Especially after losing my father who gives us power and hope.

My home was damaged and recently my school was also destroyed due to bombing by the the shelling, and I have lost my work as a teacher as well as my best colleagues while working. Moreover, I also lost my own centre for teaching English language. I was left with nothing but memories. No place remained as it was, even the memories began to fade.

Each day is a struggle as we face difficulties in obtaining basic necessities like water, food, and medicine. Even providing essential items such as baby diapers and milk which have become incredibly challenging due to the very high costs and the lack of income. Every day brings new challenges and tragedies.

I and my family have forcibly endured some of the most difficult times of cold, fear, displacement, sadness, as well as lack of electricity or proper shelter, in combination with the bombs, tanks, drones, shellings, sieges and attacks which create the most hellish conditions imaginable. Our life has been horribly unbearable. Don't leave us alone, we need you.”

Hello, my name is Faraj, and I am facing significant challenges in my daily life, including battling cancer and enduring continuous displacement due to conflict. Each day for me is a new challenge, and every step forward is filled with both hope and pain.

My story is not just about me, but about my family, who lives in constant worry. My wife, who has endured so much pain over the years, and my son, who was born after nine years of waiting, is now growing up in extremely difficult conditions. In this difficult time, I am seeking your support to help provide the basic necessities for my family, especially amid the tragic situation we are living in Gaza.
