We talked about this a little in class, but I wanted to make more of a post about it and the importance, that is of The Bottom vs the valley in Sula. In the beginning of Sula we are noted about The Bottom, referring to uphill a place that slaves were given and told was the best land. However, this was not true as uphill it did not make it easier to live, it was rather much harder now for one to access resources and needs due to distance. 

I wanted to spin this, to relate to today’s America. I think for a long time, the United States has been trying to really say they are “The Dream” or “Best Place” but it isn’t as true. I mean the piling gun violence happening, getting rights for things such as abortion restricted, and even banning talks of LGBTQ+ topics and healthcare like Florida is doing doesn’t really make this place the best. 

So, in this case I see The Bottom, as individuals in America who aren’t white, male, able-bodied, higher class. Rather The Bottom would include Native Americans, People of Color, Women, the LGBTQ+ Community, Disabled Individuals, Lower Income Families/Individuals, the list could honestly go on. 

So, with seeing The Bottom vs the valley, we watch as those individuals up in The Bottom struggle compared to those in the valley who are already at an advantage, already have an easier route, and don’t have to go through more processes that others will have to endure. We can use the examples of a white man compared to a black man and the way we see how they might be criminalized.

 For example, oftentimes, we see the white man depicted as this innocent person, they show the best picture, and often give them no or less sentencing compared to a black individual. Or we could also use the example of an able bodied person compared to a disabled bodied individual going through their daily life, there might be places that aren’t as accessible and rather than putting in the work to do so, often people will blame it on the disabled even though they can’t change that, the abled bodies have an advantage. 

So, overall, I think The Bottom compared to the valley is an important thing to break down, because it allows you to see where you are on that, it allows you to acknowledge privilege and acknowledge what you have already, what you receive compared to others who have to go through more just to get the same thing. It’s not just in Sula, this is real life and it’s a big thing we see in the nation, but we need to acknowledge it more.

I got these shoes from someone recently but thought they were way too plain looking, so I set out on a quest to customize them with some sharpies and charms and miscellaneous ribbon I had in my craft drawers. Homosassa Inshore Fishing Report with Captain Toney: Sea Trout, Cobia, Redfish & More

The hunt for sea trout has been better for me nearshore in the 8 to 10-foot range. I've been using MirrOlure's LiL Johns in watermelon red flake with a 1/8 oz. red jig head. Work the lure slowly near thebottom with a slight upward bounce. The bite can be light so stay tight with the line on every strike. Other fish that are adding to the action are spanish mackerel, flounder, sea bass, grunts, ladyfish and small gag grouper. A few cobia have been coming to the cleaning table, and speaking with the anglers who are catching them, it is a waiting game. Good structure is a must and so is sorting through the many sharks, remoras,and other fish that respond to chumming. I like to have two rigged heavy spinning rods, one with an artificial like a Hoagy and the other with a live bait like a large pinfish. 60-pound leader is a must andwith live bait a heavy wire 6/0 circle hook is best. The redfish are from the backcountry out to the western keys. In the backcountry, I like to use a cork with a jig head and live shrimp. The jig head keeps the bait directly below the cork and off the rocks asyou free-line it down the keys' edge. Further west I prefer to use cut pinfish or a live pinfish, free-lined on a 3/0 Owner bait style hook. These fish seem to get more fishing pressure and less tackle is better. Scrap charging buckets are used for top loading electric arc furnaces from top -which are designed for an even spread of scrap over the bed of the furnace. Constructed of heavy steel plate, bars and rolled shapes.
