Imploding in slow motion

I realized this morning that I’m using this space like a public LiveJournal and I know that’s not what Tumblr is for per se, but whatever, this is me right now. The person who brainvomits all their angst into a post that really shouldn’t see the light of day and hits “publish” because they’re desperate to say things out loud that should just stay inside.

Oh, my, aren’t we dramatic this morning? *slurps more coffee*

I described my current status as “imploding in slow motion” yesterday and it’s dead on. When the first wave of circumstances attacked, I was ready to fight. Then the second wave came, and I held fast but felt flickers of restlessness. Then came the random incursions in the night. Time passed and, while I haven’t lost any ground, I haven’t gained any either. 

This battle started with a blitzkrieg--a powerful attack with moving parts that made us vulnerable--but it’s turned into a waiting game. Any attempt at fighting back or taking ground is swiftly denied, followed by fresh attacks. And so I plant my feet, screw up my courage, and pray for the cavalry to come. The new attacks pile on top of the old, requiring me to strengthen my defense, but my endurance is failing. Nearly three months of expecting a reprieve that hasn’t come and the strain is starting to show. I wake up in the morning a little more tired than the morning before, my armor a little more crumpled, my sword a little less sharp. Managing the defense is a weight that grows heavier each day, pressing my feet into the ground, stooping my shoulders, bowing my once-high head. I remain steadfast, but I feel myself getting smaller as my rescue is delayed another day and another and another, seemingly regardless of my actions or prayers.

But God is still good. He is still my rescuer. He is my shield, my provider, my strength, my future. I have to remind myself every day--sometimes over and over--because it’s all I have to hold me up. As long as I remember that he is coming, that he doesn’t leave us in our mess, that all things are used for good, I can keep standing on the battlefield, keep taking hit after hit, keep trying to win. Because one day, I’ll take a step forward and stay there. That’s the hope I have in Christ. Not the kind of hope you find in a dream or birthday wish--the hope that is really expectation of good things to come.
