Hello there! We would like to announce that we are looking for a theatre tech crew person.
More info at https://www.southdevonplayers.com/crewing.html
We have been having a chat with our main sound/ lighting technician, Simon, who is incredibly busy with his main job, as an ambulance paramedic, and while he can tech some of our shows, he may not be available for them all. We have therefore all decided that we need to advertise for someone (well one, or two people) to help with the shows.
Simon and others of the team are fully able and willing to provide training to anyone interested, if needed, so "never having done it before" should not be anything to get in the way of coming on board.
We are open to anyone aged over 18, background does not matter whatsoever. We are a female led theatre company with a wide range of people who become involved in our shows, at all levels of experience, from all kinds of different backgrounds, some with disabilities - inclusion alongside the creation of excellent shows are key to our work.
Our rehearsals are on Wednesdays and Sundays at Chestnut Community Centre, on Poplar Close in Brixham, and our shows tour in Devon, Cornwall and up to Bristol.
Rehearsals are 1-2 sessions a week, and performances (when we come to performance tour time) are one- two days (Fridays and /or Saturdays) on various weeks (not every week by a long chalk- it’s dependant on when performance venues have booked our show for one-day performances)
This role involves
- Training on our equipment as needed
- Keeping the technical equipment safe and in good working order
- Being aware of, and following, good health and safety practices
- Working sound/ lighting cues for rehearsals and performances
- Working alongside the rest of the actors and stage crew in a kind, positive team
- Sometimes working alone
- Discussion with show venue staff about tech at shows
We would be hugely grateful if anyone reading this could forward the details to anyone who may be interested. There is more information on our main website, and we can be contacted at any time on [email protected]. we would love to hear from you.

I finally got to use Binkley Reflections R77760 for Rock of Ages at the Company Theatre in Norwell, MA. Originally called "Internal Reflections", Rosco renamed this gobo as a tribute to lighting designer Howell Binkley and the impact his work had on the industry. Binkley used this design in many of his shows and it was his favorite gobo. #rectangleatthebottom #howellbinkley #rosco #lightingdesign #theatrelighting (at The Company Theatre Center for the Arts) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTDu7kEs66J/?utm_medium=tumblr

Role: LIGHTING EQUIPMENT RENTAL, LIGHTING DESIGNER & OPERATOR- ANGLO-CHINESE JUNIOR COLLEGE Dance Ensemble showcase, BAILAMOS 2018
Venue: ACJC Faith Centre for Performing Arts.
Into my 5th year designing and operating lighting for ACJC Bailamos. It is the first time using a dry-ice machine in this venue. It was immensely satisfying to hear a resonating “WOW” from the audience when the dances emerge from the low lying fog.
It is always a humbling experience to watch such young dancers put in so much effort into their choreography. All the more my lighting needs to be on point, never overwhelm each piece by being too flashy, or too subtle and not being about to set the mood for each scene. Always my pleasure and looking forward to the next BAILAMOS by ACJC Dance Ensemble.

Our cast put on a phenomenal show through and through tonight! . "They showed me crimson, gold, and lavender--a shining parade--but there's no color I can have on earth that won't finally fade." I think this is one of the most gorgeous moments in the show, both visually and emotionally. . #Pippin #pippinrevival #Pippinthemusical #EPAC #ephratapa #EphrataPerformingArts #ephrataperformingartscenter @epac_theater #musicaltheater #musicaltheatre #liveproduction #lightboardop #livepro #theaterlighting #theatrelighting #finale #climaxyoullrememberfortherestofyourlives #choosingreality #choosingfamily https://www.instagram.com/p/B0sISF2AzB9/?igshid=fr3azcu1ps0r

Why I love theatre
I love creating something out of virtually nothing One week you've got nothing and the next you have a whole set and blocking and lines and what was once an empty stage becomes ur home I love watching the cyc change from white to whatever color I make it. I love the blue HS lights and the warm HS lights But I think the boom and box lights are my favorite!! I love the smell of sawdust and the sound of drilling because it means productivity and creation of entirely new setpieces I love the sound of the voices reverberating throughout the house during a 3 part harmony And I love the 9 volt batteries that truly keep the show going on I love the click of the keys on the lightboard when I'm programming and the little "whirrr" of the scroll when I change the percentage I love the echoing thud of feet in the catwalks and the weight of a headset on my head I love the burning heat of the bright lights, preferably Spots 40/50, on my skin and the sound of my costume swishing as I move I love the way all the lights swirl together in perfect harmony like the music that's being sung I love booth dancing. Enough said. I love the weight of a libretto in my arms and the scratch of the pencil on paper as I'm drawing sets I love reading musical lyrics and linking lighting with the music and designing lights for that song in my head I love the echo of the hollow stage beneath my feet and the smooth roll of the wheels on a wall from one wing to the other ‪And I love climbing 18 foot ladders just to get a perfect paint job ‬ ‪I love the loud clang of metal and the sound of unfolding instructions as we're trying to build a setpiece but miserably failing‬ ‪I love the strong smell of paint and the sound of heavy metal doors opening to ventilate the place bc we're actually dying‬ ‪I love the stroke of the highlighter on the pages of my script as I mark my lines and cues‬ ‪But I also love the smooth roll of the pen as I write my own cue sheet in almost complete darkness‬ I love everything about the idea of creation and creativity and expression through art. ‪To make someone happy while also doing ‬ ‪But I think the thing that I love the most about theatre are the smiles that I see on so many people because of it‬ ‪something that you are truly passionate about brings so much love into the world‬ ‪Seeing the smiles on little kid's faces or the tears of genuine emotions on adults and knowing that I was a part of that,‬ That's what I love. That the work that we did, that this show that we worked so hard on, made other people happy. And that's why I love theatre.
