In one of my Moods I started a comprehensive document of all the English language on/off-Broadway Asian musicals (that is, centring around Asian character and/or settings) that have at least one Asian lyricist, composer and/or librettist. And it's pretty bleak!
Asian musicals by Asian people:
Allegiance, Flower Drum Song (2002 Reworking), KPOP, Maybe Happy Ending, Soft Power, The Band's Visit
Asian musicals by white people:
Aladdin, Flower Drum Song, Here Lies Love, Miss Saigon, Pacific Overtures, South Pacific, The King and I
Notably, all of the musicals written by Asian people (minus DHH's reworking of Flower Drum Song) were from the past 10 years or so. On the flip side, Here Lies Love is the only Asian musical written by white people from this century. A promising trend? I'll only be happy once Asian musicals actually have runs longer than 100 performances :')

Some paintings in the style of concept art from two of my favorite scenes from musicals. The helicopter scene from Kim's nightmare in Miss Saigon and the baracade scene from Les Miserables

Also, since apparently I'm Nordic musical posting tonight: I'm so done with Nordic theatres putting musical tickets up for sale without simultaneously announcing the leading cast. So done!!
Sure, I can see it from a business perspective. Maybe you're missing some key player from the cast, but still want to put the tickets up for sale two years in advance to make some money off the production well in advance. Not to mention that this way, you get to send two announcement news letters and press releases and such, one for the show and another for the cast. It does make sense.
But even so, come on now!! No matter how smart it is economics-wise, for a musical fan, the prospect of buying tickets to a show with a mystery cast feels like ordering a pie in a restaurant without knowing if it's going to be meat or blueberry. Just show me the menu before bringing me the check, please.

Experience Popular Musicals at Home: Proshots of Hamilton, Heathers and More!
Whether you’ve fallen short to cost of living, have other commitments, or simply don’t have the time anymore, I think we can all agree that it’s getting more and more difficult to take a trip to London (or anywhere else you are in the world), to see your favourite show. Thanks to the 21st Century however, musical theatre is becoming increasingly more accessible, with more shows becoming…
