Coronavirus: Arts and culture given £53m from Welsh Government

The arts and culture sector is to be supported by £53m from the Welsh Govt.

Merch Yr Eog- Review
Merch yr Eog is a production by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Teatr Piba (a company from Brittany) and in partnership with Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The play is performed in three different languages such as French, Britton and welsh, Merch Yr Eog is a multicultural play, where its spoken in three different languages Welsh, Breton and French. It is set in Wales and Brittany. The play was developed by two theatre companies Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Teatr Piba from Brittany.
Mair is called home to a funeral, and feelings of guilt and responsibility are brought to the surface. She starts to question her values and the happiness she thought she had found in Brittany with her partner Loeiza. At the opening of the play, she has returned from Brittany, where she is based with her Breton partner Loeiza to the family farm in her native Wales for the funeral of her aunt. Due to the death of her aunt and the struggles her family are facing on the farm she starts to question her place in the world. The play itself explores the ideals and struggles of life as an immigrant and the challenging consequences of those emotions. It depicts the life of how an immigrant struggles living away from home and feelings of guilt of being happy when their family are suffering back home. In terms of set it also explores how a change in scene can be determined or shown through a simple prop.
So, does it succeed in this? Some aspects yes it does succeed because it does show the internal struggles Mair has to deal with and how that affects her relationship with her family and her partner, however the main point of the play was struggles to come across not because of the language barrier but I felt at times that it didn’t quite make sense and when Mair’s neighbour came on with the fish a symbol of hope and to reach out to her which at first I believed to be the main focus of the play I felt was undermined by a simple plotline. However, it does succeed in showing the use of props because I thought it was effective using the prop to change scene and be the focus point of the set on stage.
The most effective element was the set, the use of the rock which never left the stage was creative. It was really inspiring and creative of them to psychically move the rock as each scene changed which symbolised the scene changing and a new place or time which I have never seen before so I thought was creative.
I believe if the language was changed to just English or just Breton then the play wouldn’t be multicultural and the play would lose a lot of its originality and uniqueness.

Merch Yr Eog
On Tuesday the 25th of October at the Wales Millennium centre located in Cardiff Bay a theatre group called Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Teatr Piba put on a production call Merch Yr Eog (The Salmon's Daughter). This play was performed in three different languages that you could listen to of your choice on a downloaded app called Sibrwd. The languages that you could follow the performance on were Welsh, Breton, French and English. You could listen to the performance with headphones while watching the production visually however this served as a distraction to the fluent welsh speakers in the audience because the wide range of dialects created a confusion between the different areas of Wales and the fact that other languages were included caused there to be a larger language barrier than necessary. The App itself while useful for those who understand none of the language used also served as a distraction from the performance itself as it was hard to keep up with was physically and visually happening in front of the audience. However, despite the language barrier the performance itself was able to create an engrossing atmosphere for the audience into the personal life’s and emotions of the characters within the play despite the performance having a minimalistic set which allowed the audience to focus more on the characters and how they were reacting to the scene around them.
During this production, there was a specific centre piece through the whole performance. This was a large grey rock that was used as a prop and also part of the set. This structure stood out as a centre piece for the audience because it became a staple for the actor’s movements. This allowed them to explore the staging space.
The lighting for this production was very naturalised where as it fitted the scene that was happening on stage at the time for example when the main character called Mair and her girlfriend were at the Spa resort the lighting had a warm yellow glow creating a warm artificial sunlight. At certain points in this performance a small glass tank on a stand was wheeled on to the stage by one character. This gave off the impression of emptiness as each time the tank came on stage there was nothing in the tank despite a character of a man staring through it as if it was full of life. This peaked the audiences interest despite them subconsciously knowing there was nothing in the tank. They felt like they were looking at something animated. Although this performance had many interesting elements within its set design however these aspects disillusioned the audience away from the atmosphere the characters were trying to create as they were trying to concentre on the language and the app that was included that the set didn’t register highly on their radar.

Live Performance Review; Merch Yr Eog
Merch Yr Eog based on the work by Owen Martell and Aziliz Bourges is a multilingual co-production by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, Teatr Piba, Brittany, in partnership with Aberystwyth Arts Centre exploring the issues that young people face in rural communities. The play is also open to interpretation, therefore your experience and opinion on the play could be completely different, but here is my take on it; the confusing and what seems to be only described as ‘what is going on’ play uses the imagery of a salmon, hence the title translated ‘The Salmons Daughter’, to show the main character Mair going against the normal ‘current’ or in reality, the norms of rural society; instead of staying and taking over her parents farm, she moved to Brittany but now she is faced with whether to return home and live her life or to stay put with her cosmopolitan life in Brittany with her partner. I found that the play used irrelevant design elements in order to try and draw the audience in, for example the use of strobe lighting and techno music whilst animals danced in high heels around the stage... I mean what was I even watching? It felt like they’d drugged the audience and I was hallucinating. It did not seem to relate to Mair’s struggles or help in making her decision, it just seemed to fill space with quirky lighting and music and try to entertain those who struggled with the language barrier as it was performed in Welsh, Breton and French. Some design elements however did seem effective in portraying the feeling of Mair going against the current, ‘the norms of rural society’ throughout the play, as there were 5 screens projecting shifting shapes of the sea and a salmon struggling to overcome them. I found this an engaging element as it seemed to be the only thing that made sense in the play when relating to the theme of family heritage and the decisions that come with this. The set also lead to inconsistency and confusion of the performance as the rock centre stage had various uses of a rock, a bedroom and a wall, it was overwhelming to figure out when the scene had changed due to a pillow and a book being added into the carved out rock to resemble a bedroom. I found it odd that they would use a rock to portray a bedroom, but at the same time I admire their creativity. I feel like there could of been more distinction between places/set and this would help the storyline to flow more. This play attracts a particular audience and for me and my peers, this play was not aimed at us. The language barrier made it hard enough to understand, let alone with the random dancing and obscure use of animal imagery. I would not put it at the top of my list of plays to see again.
