Zola Jesus Announces New Album Okovi, Shares New Track “Exumed”: Listen

Zola Jesus has announced the follow-up to 2014’s Taiga. Okovi is out September 8 via Sacred Bones. She’s also shared the first single—listen to “Exhumed” below. The album is her return to Sacred Bones—her last album was released on Mute, and in a statement, she called Sacred Bones “the closest group of people [she’ll] ever have to blood-bound family.” It features contributions from longtime collaborator Alex DeGroot, WIFE, Pedestrian Deposit’s Shannon Kennedy, and percussionist Ted Byrnes. Zola Jesus has also plotted a fall tour, which includes her appearance at Basilica SoundScape. Below, find Zola Jesus’ artist statement, the Okovi tracklist, and her upcoming tour dates.

Zola Jesus:

Last year, I moved back to the woods in Wisconsin where I was raised. I built a little house just steps away from where my dilapidated childhood tree fort is slowly recombining into earth. Okovi was fed by this return to roots and several very personal traumas. While writing Okovi, I endured people very close to me trying to die, and others trying desperately not to. Meanwhile, I was fighting through a haze so thick I wasn’t sure I’d find my way to the other side. Death, in all of its masks, has been encircling everyone I love, and with it the questions of legacy, worth, and will. Okovi is a Slavic word for shackles. We’re all shackled to something—to life, to death, to bodies, to minds, to illness, to people, to birthright, to duty. Each of us born with a unique debt, and we have until we die to pay it back.  Without this cost, what gives us the right to live? And moreover, what gives us the right to die? Are we really even free to choose? This album is a deeply personal snapshot of loss, reconciliation, and a sympathy for the chains that keep us all grounded to the unforgiving laws of nature. To bring it to life, I decided to enlist the help of Alex DeGroot, who has been the only constant in my live band and helped mix the Stridulum EP back in 2010. It will be released on Sacred Bones, the closest group of people I’ll ever have to blood-bound family.

As you may know, early this morning in Aurora, Colorado at a movie theater, at a premiere of The Dark Knight Rises, there was a mass shooting in theater 9. At this point there are 12 dead including a 6 year old girl. Her father has confirmed that she has regrettably passed on. Approximately 50 people are injured, and the death count has not risen.

Police apprehended the suspected shooter James Holmes, 24, at the scene of the crime. Holmes is originally from San Diego, has Tennessee license plates, and lived in Aurora, Colorado. He was a student at the University of Colorado until he withdrew last month. Holmes began shooting after a violent scene in The Dark Knight Rises around 12:30 a.m., some witnesses believed that the shots emanated from the  soundtrack to the movie. Holmes was armed with a semi automatic rifle, two hand guns, and gas bombs. He released the gas bombs and opened fire on theater 9.

His parents have confirmed that their son is in custody, and are planning to fly to Colorado soon. Currently they are still inside their house. A spokeswoman spoke for the family moments ago, they ask for their privacy and the privacy of their neighbors. The family is cooperating with all forms of law enforcement. The spokeswoman said they see this morning's events as a tragedy.

The police have determined that Holmes' apartment is booby tapped, possibly with explosives and other flammable chemicals. The bobby trapping has been described as sophisticated, and bomb techs from various agencies are working to disarm the traps. The local police have evacuated five surrounding buildings, and have photos of the traps, as well as, ammunition. One source stated that "there were buckets of ammunition" inside the apartment. The police are uncertain as to how long it will take to disarm the apartment. One source stated "We could be here for hours or even days".

The eye witnesses have been transferred to a local high school by police to be cared for and interviewed. Their families are left wondering if their relatives and friends are okay. The police are trying to eliminate the confusion. 

I just ask all of tumblr to send their thoughts, prayers, condolences, wishes, etc. to the families of the victims, eye witnesses, people of Aurora, and law enforcement. 

This act of senseless violence wounds everyone. I ask that we gather to show our support to those involved in this tragedy.
