The fact that all of Erik’s greatest fears about humanity’s response to mutantkind come true in the dark Sentinel future, and yet when he and Charles end up cornered about to die while waiting for the timeline to be changed, rather than express hope that mutants will have better lives in the new timeline, Erik’s last words instead express hope that he will have more time with Charles.

The fact that in his last moments, more time with Charles is what Erik wants most, even more than peace for mutantkind.

The fact that he admits all those years without Charles were a waste, that his life was wasted because he chose to spend it away from Charles.

The fact that having a life with Charles is the possibility that makes everything worth it for him, even more so than this new hope for his kind.

The fact that he ensures Charles knows that if he could save time in a bottle, the first thing he’d like to do is save every day till eternity passes away just to spend them with his beloved telepath…

Before the standoff (between the X-Men and the O*N*E) can turn into a fight, Cyclops orders everyone to stand down and invites Agent Lundqvist of O*N*E for a chat to prevent any bloodshed. At first, the conversation is formal, but formality turns into outright threats, backed up by two developments.

First, as Scott and Lundqvist talk, the Hellions (consisting of King Bedlam, Jesse Bedlam, Boom-Boom, Locus and Fantomex) systematically attack unmanned O*N*E facilities to destroy records, tech, resources, and more. Lundqvist becomes enraged, but Cyclops coldly informs the agent that this is the price the government will pay for turning a blind eye to Graymalkin’s actions. Second, Cyclops dares Lundqvist to open fire on him or any mutant present. If Cyclops is killed by government agents, he has orders in place to destroy every unmanned government facility in the country. And if Cyclops dies, the Phoenix would hunt down the murderer when she finds out. Agent Lundqvist knows he’s in a stalemate and leaves with the promise to relay the word that mutants are off-limits.

The fact that in the Sentinel timeline, Charles and Erik went from “then you know to stay out of my head” to “you sneaking around in here, Charles, whatever are you looking for?” to “can’t you read my minnnnnnnd?” to Charles being comfortably inside Erik’s mind for the entire duration of Rogue’s rescue mission is actually so important to me.

The X-Men/Pizza Hut Super Savings Book

If you've been following me for a while you'll know I like digging up obscure and outside context X-Men comics. Swimsuit specials, offensive fundraiser books, and straight up advertising like this. The Pizza Hut Super Savings book featuring the X-Men doesn't attempt any kind of narrative, which is probably a good thing. It's a brief history of the X-Men and some pizza coupons. A cultural artifact! Enjoy

Look! It's Wolverine again. It is known that Wolverine sells pizzas and is the centre of the Marvel universe. Not sure what he's angry about, but I guess that's how he rolls.

It breezes through the Wolverine-less Silver Age while hitting the highlights. Chuck and the O5, Magneto and the Brotherhood, The Vanisher, Juggernaut, Namor, Master Mold, Mimic, Count Nefaria, and some other bozos lost to time and apathy.

The events of Giant-Size X-Men alongside some limited edition pizza coupons. Hurry, stocks won't last. It's 32 years later and I can confirm that stocks did not last. That lunch buffet is good value, and there's Krakoa being denied one and yeeted into space never to be seen again.

Things were not peaceful but whatever. Steven Lang and his sentinels setting up the Phoenix Sagas. Ka-Zar, boo! Sunfire, woo! Chuck's imperialist bird girlfriend, meh. Alpha Flight is mentioned, and of course Jean's death at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga. I feel like pizza.

The book ends on the then current Jim Lee X-Men. Who knows what the future holds from here? (More Jim Lee X-Men every few years, that's what.) Bishop, Jubilee, Cable, Archangel, X-Factor, Psylocke, Rogue, Gambit. Not enough Magneto IMO. They could fit Ka-Zar but not the New Mutants? Anyway, weird shit. I think Marvel only ramped up the ads after this. I find it interesting how stuff like this functions as a time capsule by including real world information. If pizza was this cheap now I'd probably eat a lot of it.

Enjoyed the hell out of X-Men ‘97! Made a poster from drawings I’ve done (Never drawn Morph so he’s Colossus 😂). Excited to see how the rest of the season plays out! ❌
