THE ANGELS' SHARE
THE ANGELS’ SHARE
His name was Sandy, and he’d worked at the Inverlochan Distillery man and boy. The day after he’d left school, he’d gone straight into the whisky-making business and had never left. He didn’t need to. He was content as anyone had a right to be.He’d met his future wife, Sadie there – she’d worked in payroll – and on the day they’d got married, the distillery donated a barrel of whisky to the…

"We are, like fine bourbon, a different product at the end—and there is a sacrifice involved: We are made of the same core elements we were at first constructed of, but we are never the same afterward. We are permanently altered. If we are lucky and we are smart and we are freed at the right time, we are improved. If we aged too long, we are ruined forever.  📚 Timing, like fate, is everything." . . . ❤ . . . @jrwardauthor @penguinrandomhouse #theangelsshare #bourbonkingsseries #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #literaryadventures #fiction #Adventure #booksbooksbooks #bibliophile #booknerd #inlovewithliterature #novel #book

A whisky that was put into a barrel in 1974. The Angels have had their share and over half the whisky has evaporated. The tour guy said that when it will be bottles it will cost over £1000. 😱 #Heughliganonthemove #theangelsshare (at Deanston distillery)

The Angels' Share
Tumblr media
The Angels' Share is a 2012 film by the renowned British director Ken Loach. Marking his fifth film set in Scotland, and his tenth collaboration with Scottish screenwriter Paul Laverty, The Angels' Share is often a far lighter affair than some would perhaps expect from the director of Kes and Sweet Sixteen but the frequent comedic notes does not mean that the film has nothing to say about modern Scotland, iconic Scotland, Scots or does not contain the directors trademark sympathy or political concern.
Loach uses non-professionals and first time actors  for much of his cast and once again unearths new talent. The Angel's Share is a story of one man's desire and attempts to change. Following an appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court a young man Robbie is given one final chance to avoid prison as he is about to become a father. Sentenced to community service he finds companionship amongst the others sharing his sentence and a mentor figure in supervisor Harry. The film turns upon a distillery tour where Robbie discovers that he has a connoisseurs nose for whisky.
The film then moves from the urban Central Belt to the Highlands, from struggle to heist, from the 'real' Scotland to the world's image of Scotland. Will the 'angel's share' (the 2% of whisky lost annually to evaporation whilst being cask-stored) be enough to offer Robbie and his new-found friends a chance at a better life?
Much of the film's comedy stems from the disconnect between the image of Scotland which has been presented to the world and the reality of life for many Scots. For example the fantastically-stupid Albert has never visited Edinburgh before (despite it being less than an hour's journey from his home) and cannot believe that there is a castle in the middle of the city.
Later our heroes, aware how much they stand out away from Glasgow, attempt to disguise themselves by dressing in kilts. It take a tourist to point out to one of them that they are wearing their kilts backwards. It is interesting to note that the film moves from the urban to the rural, from the 'real' Scotland to the 'mythic' Scotland.
Beginning in Glasgow and ending in Loch Lomond; exposure to the landscape of Scotland seems to a liberating and transcendent effect upon the characters.  Ken Loach spoke of this when promoting the film commenting; “The point was to show that the Sir Walter Scott image of kilts and sporrans bears no reality to the lives of ordinary Scottish people.
The Highlands are a force of nature not to be parodied, but the use of Highland scenes and tartan on shortbread tins and of Edinburgh Castle on millions of postcards is largely an invention of the tourist industry.” Screenwriter Paul Laverty made similar points; “There’s a quaint view of Scotland — all kilts, bagpipes, whisky, misty mountains and clear streams. The kids in the film take advantage of all that through their wit and streetwiseness.”
The Angels' Share certainly shows more of the country than one would generally expect. Glasgow is captured in it's multi-faceted reality - from the city centre bars of Mitchell Lane, the almost-other life of the leafy West End, to the characterful if slightly down Dennistoun.
Balblair Distillery in Ross shire is featured heavily - showing a perhaps more expected image of Scotland but using it to underline just out of place the characters are in the tourists Scotland; almost strangers in their own land.
The final setting of the film Arrochar, in Argyll, represents the chance of a new life - a world away from Glasgow and the past and yet so close in real terms.
Loach manages to have his cake and eat it in the Angel's Share  - exposing the falseness of the tourist image of Scotland, subverting it and yet managing to revel in it.

Lost Abbey: The Angel's Share • Strong Ale Aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels • 12.5% abv • Enjoyed 2 nights ago. Lots of oak-y vanilla flavor in this bourbon bad boy. Caramel malts rounded out the profile. I'm a big fan of this beer as a stand-alone as well as the Deliverance ale blend of brandy-barrel Angel's Share and bourbon-barrel Serpent's Stout. This brew exemplifies the big flavors a simple barrel interaction can be capable of while not waging war on your palette like the Deliverance blend. Bravo @lostabbey! • #lostabbey • #theangelsshare • #craftbeer
