In 1980s Scotland, at Iron Maiden's concert in Dundee, a young man tries to con his way out of factory work by putting on concerts with money from the mob.

It's very loud isn't it. Driven by the rush of teenage hormones, and a need to emulate both Trainspotting and Human Traffic, it all shouts past so fast that we might not notice how little character it actually has under the fast-cut posturing...or we might.

Nice colours and set design though.

Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself.

Choose your future.

Choose life.

Trainspotting is an incredible Scottish film that focuses on the side of Scotland that is not really shown in the media. This opening monologue is a poem really if you truly think about it, and shows the time period of the film for sure. It also makes you wonder what on earth this film is going to be about, and in reality, you are in for a ride. This film focuses on the Heroin and AIDS epidemics in the 1980′s in Edinburgh, and showcases the effects on the people of Scotland. Directed by Danny Boyle, and featuring an almost entirely Scottish cast, this film aims to expose the harsh realities that live within this often romanticised nation.

Gregory's Girl - Bill Forsyth (1981)

Awkward (who isn't at that age) Scottish teenager Gregory (John Scott Sinclair, from them Tescos adverts in the 90s), vies for the affections of the newest addition to his schools failing football team. In trying to win her hand, he navigates the avenues and toilet cubicles of his school and estate seeking some sound love advice to win the girl of his dreams. Will he wake up?

This is geniuenly a film where nothing happens, and that is its greatest charm. The way it gently navigates the anxiety, and missaprehension, and need for guidance in a rapidly changing world that all teenagers go through is both accurate, and fun. The leads all pull off their roles with casual relatability and it's just all a bit sweet and matter of fact. 

Not the most life-changing or ground-breaking of films, but perhaps the most real.

New, updated "Choose Life" monolog from T2. Reading that T2 Trainspotting screenplay was amazing. There is so many wonderful scenes that, sadly, wasn't in the film.
