Stuffed to the gills with faux flora, is another shop in my retail district now complete. It’s across the landing from the candle shop. I assume the shop owners get along, though I imagine their outlooks must be vastly different with one’s life’s work centering on things that will remain unchanged and likely outlive them and the other’s centering on something in a state of perpetual transmutation throughout its ephemeral life.

The maisonette, part 1, first level. The last unit of the retail district. There was some leftover square footage after the parking garage was built, so they decided to zone it for residential occupancy. As a result, the quarters are oddly shaped, long, and close to narrow, but the tenant made it work.

The 3 outer strips are done, now it’s time to work on the central block of this retail district. Fresh cuts, produce, grab-n-go, and everyday essentials always in stock at the Corner Market.

Initially I was going to use the see through floor from IL for the skylight, but I wasn’t feeling the way it looked from inside.

This is the last of the individual units, next up will be street views of the retail district.

I love hyper-specific specialty shops. The idea is kind of ridiculous to me, mostly because I abhor the idea of having to go to 20 different places to get 20 different things. It represents a brand of cultish consumerism that is difficult to sustain as a business model in the US since we often value convenience over most things, even value itself.

On the other hand, Japan, a nation that has–from building codes to household gadgets–taken convenience (and efficiency) to levels the US, for the sake of industries’ ability to keep fleecing us, prevents itself from achieving, thrives on these ultra-niche retail outlets. From anime collab cafes to ramen joints that have sold nothing but for 50 years, they’re making it work. But over here, Dunkin Donuts, Dairy Queen, and Rita’s Water Ice have had to diversify their offerings in order to keep going.

Admittedly, it’s a different story when you take it online. Etsy, anyone? Anyway, my desire to spend as little time as possible out of doors won’t let me fully co-sign the concept on the streets IRL, but they make life more interesting for my Sims. And isn’t that the whole point?
