🌟Collars!🌟 Collar construction is the tightrope walk between the neckline curve and the angle of your center back seam/fold line. For me the most important aspect is to get the slope around the neck right. For this, start with measuring center back to front to determine the minimum of your pattern while working. I add an inch to fiddle with and cut off as necessary. If you’ve worked with commercial patterns, which probably are one of two kinds: with or without stand, you’ve likely seen the semi curved line that is the neck. For unusual designs it may need to change. Some collars can be straight on the rule. Close fitting mandarin collars, for example. Stands and lapels on big coats have some curve. My collar today is a roller coaster! In the lower right image you can see my drafting process. I started with a traditional straight neck edge but my center seam and collar point were not correct (top brown piece). I then changed my center back slightly and shot out the front point to a more severe angle, both of which I was happy with. I clip the neck edge to pin it to the jacket and see how it rests, then doodled on a new copy. You can see I have drawn a curved line that fits around the neck and shoulder. I’ve also added in seam allowance markings and my fold line. Don’t forget to use appropriate interfacing or stabilizer to ensure your collar stands up! Yesterday I started the final little details for Sinbad. They’ll finish today. I also remade the belt after the client and I agreed we wanted it to sit lower on the body. The belt I made was a great mid-section cinch but didn’t fit comfortable around the curve of waist-to-hip when dropping it down. So! Made a new one with more curve in the pattern pieces to accommodate! Handle done! Blade done! Time to spend a day literally watching glue dry! 😭 When applying your filler, wood glue, and/or paint it’s best to work in thin layers. They’ll dry faster and over time as you build up more layers you’ll get better coverage! Less is more!
