Tsuzuru: Yeah, I’m glad that they willingly agreed. Even if it meant we’d be interrupting their preparation time.

Homare: Yes. Well, we don’t want to make them late for opening time, so shall we get started?

Tsuzuru: Yeah. Let’s do this.

Tsuzuru: Hello. I’m MANKAI Company’s Spring Troupe’s Tsuzuru Minagi.

Tsuzuru: Arisugawa-san is the one filming.

Homare: Winter Troupe’s Homare Arisugawa. Today I am Tsuzuru-kun’s cameraman.

Tsuzuru: Thank you for today.

Homare: Yes, my pleasure.

Tsuzuru: Well then, the place I’m going to introduce to you all is here, a shop called “Bakery Theato”.

Tsuzuru: Today we have special permission to be here before opening time.

Homare: The lovely aroma of baking bread fills the store!

Tsuzuru: It’s really appetizing.

Tsuzuru: …Actually, the reason I learned about his place was because of my fellow Spring Troupe member, Masumi.

Homare: Oho, is that so?

Tsuzuru: Yeah. I never used to buy bread at this bakery, but…

Tsuzuru: Then Masumi started getting curry bread from here for me often, and it’s really good.

Tsuzuru: And I liked them so much that I started buying some for myself from time to time.

Homare: I see, so that’s why. Have you ever gotten anything other than curry bread?

Tsuzuru: Of course! Their curry bread isn’t the only thing that’s delicious.

Tsuzuru: Plus they have different bread every day, so I don’t think you’ll get bored of it even if you come here every single day.

Homare: That’s splendid! I’d come here every day if I could.

Tsuzuru: They have a lot of different kinds of bread, but I like this salted bread the most.

Tsuzuru: This time, I was given special permission to have some inside the store, so I’m gonna eat it right away.

Tsuzuru: Well then, let’s dig in. Awmph…

Homare: How is it?

Tsuzuru: Delicious as always. It’s simple with the outside being crispy and the inside being chewy…

Tsuzuru: And the saltiness is just right, I’ll never get bored of eating it.

Homare: It’s a quite delectable-looking food review. It makes me want to try some as well.

Tsuzuru: After we finish filming, you should try some too, Arisugawa-san.

Homare: Yes, I shall do that.

Tsuzuru: All of their breads are really delicious, I encourage you all to try them.

Rento: Don’t worry ‘bout that! Why’d ya introduce that bakery!?

Tsuzuru: Why… should I not have?

Rento: I love the melon pan there and go there literally all the time! What if that place becomes too popular and I can’t get it anymore!?

Tsuzuru: No, that’s…

Masumi: It was so good, that place wasn’t crowded and it was like a well-kept-secret place.

Rento: Woulda liked to have kept that place a secret if I coulda…

Tsuzuru: Uh, I’m sorry…?

Rento: Nah, it’s fine. More customers are good for the bakery.

Tsuzuru: Well, if you look at it from the store’s perspective, it is good for sales.

Rento: I ‘spose… We should be happy that the people who make such good melon pan are happy!

Masumi: Yeah. If we want to get bread, we can just go early in the morning. That way we’ll never lose to the other customers.

Rento: Woo, that’s the spirit!

Rento: My bad, Tsuzuru. Well, I better dip. Later!

Masumi: I’m going back to our room.

Tsuzuru: Yeah, Director’s the one in charge of it today so you can bet on it being curry.

Tsuzuru: Huh, Kinozaki-san?

Rento: Ooh, well if it ain’t Tsuzuru and Taichi. What’re you two up to?

Taichi: We’re on our way home from uni!

Tsuzuru: What are you doing, Kinozaki-san?

Rento: I came here to get some of my favorite melon pan. There’s a place around here that I like.

Tsuzuru: Ah, are you talking about that “Bakery Theato” on the corner there?

Rento: Wait, you know about that place too, Tsuzuru!?

Tsuzuru: Yeah, Masumi buys curry bread there sometimes.

Rento: Ah, so it’s ‘cause of Masumi, huh? Well, I’ve bought things for Director-san from there before too.

Rento: Ah, I’d better get goin’. Later~.

Taichi: Rento-san sure ran off fast… He really wants that melon pan, huh?

Tsuzuru: He said that it’s his favorite, so that’s probably why. Anyway, let’s head home.

Tsuzuru: Ah, Director. Are you preparing dinner?

Tsuzuru: (Just as I thought, looks like today’s dinner is curry.)

Izumi: Ah!

Tsuzuru: Huh, what’s wrong?

Izumi: Actually, I have to call the theater company I’m helping out at, but I totally forgot about it.

Izumi: Things are a bit complicated, so I have to call them as soon as possible, but if I don’t skim off the scum now, the curry won’t be good…

Tsuzuru: Then leave skimming off the scum to me and go make your call.

Izumi: Huh, are you sure? You’ll really do that?

Tsuzuru: Of course.

Izumi: Thank you! Once the scum is removed, you can leave it to simmer on low heat.

Tsuzuru: Gotcha.

Tsuzuru: (Well, now that I’ve accepted the challenge, I’ve gotta do it right. The Director is very particular about how the curry is made…)

Masumi: Director.

Masumi: …You’re not her. What the hell, Tsuzuru? I thought the Director was in charge of dinner today…

Tsuzuru: Sorry for being me, I guess. Welcome home to you too, Masumi.

Masumi: I’m home. …Haah, I can’t even give her this curry bread.

Tsuzuru: Huh, that bag…! You went to “Bakery Theato” today too?

Masumi: Yeah.

Tsuzuru: You didn’t happen to run into Kinozaki-san there then, did you?

Masumi: Rento? I didn’t see him.

Tsuzuru: Ah, well, figures. Your schedules kinda conflict, so I guess that makes sense…

Masumi: What are you talking about?

Tsuzuru: It’s nothing. Anyway, you were looking for the Director because you got curry bread?

Masumi: Yeah. Where is she?

Tsuzuru: She went to her room for a work call just a bit ago. It seemed like it was gonna take a while, so I don’t think she’s finished yet.

Masumi: Okay.

Masumi: Right. Here… for you.

Tsuzuru: Oh, thanks. Did you get some for everyone in Spring Troupe too?

Masumi: Well, I figured why not… besides, it’ll make them all happy.

Masumi: Well, I’m going to our room.

Tsuzuru: Huh… because it’ll make them all happy, huh? He really has grown.

Forty tons of muscle, fat, and bone, launched like a rocket. A Breach. No one's entirely sure of why they do it. I might be tempted to say it's nothing if not joy.

Inspired by the true story of Jon Lien - known as the Whale Man - Between Breaths is a profoundly emotional memory play that sails through Lien's life and the dangerous, death-defying work of saving whales trapped in fishing nets off Newfoundland's coast. Over his long career, Lien saved over 500 whales and earned the respect of the island's fishermen, but his biggest fight came at the end of his life as dementia progressively conquered his body and mind. Featuring an evocative live score by Newfoundland's Juno-nominated The Once, Between Breaths is a beautiful and poignant play about the parts of ourselves we hold on to after everything else is gone.
