This work in progress is a recreation of Michelangelo’s ‘The Creation of Adam’ done with charcoal and chalk on toned paper. The purpose of this was to accentuate the highlights and shadows created by the curves of the figures muscles.

Supernatural

The Creation of Adam painted by Michelangelo. It is a supernatural belief that God “imparted the spark of life” into the finger of Adam. Although this painting is not recent, it is still something we see very often as there have been many remakes of this image (like the one shown above) and it is still often referred to in popular movies or television shows as it is a popular image most everyone recognizes.

I had to start off with my favorite and most recognizable. I couldn’t leave this one out; it’s actually something I’d like to get tattooed. I purposely put these two together for a reason. The original painting already follows my theme as it is, and the title is self explanitory (The Creation of Adam). The second picture may have a similar meaning, depending on how you look at it. One hand is passing a blunt to the other. To some people, marijuana allows them to be more creative. Certain skills may be enhanced. People create music, art, write, and more when they are under the influence of it, and claim they’re better at it while high. On the other hand, the picture may represent destruction. Inhaling masses of smoke into your lungs can damage them.

What are the conditions that have allowed Fanwork to flourish in Japan?

Mind set. There are laws against self- published fan-work in Japan, similar to in the West. For those laws to be enforced, the original holder of the rights (the creator), has to complain. The difference between Japan and the West is that creators in Japan don’t complain. The Japanese see fan-work as flattery to the original creator, and as free advertisement for their work. In Japan copying is seen as being acceptable, because their culture is built upon the art of copying and replication in order to improve. Many copyright holders don’t act upon the creation of Doujinshi as they know that is where many manga artists start from. This is very important in Japan as Manga is a big part of their culture. “The All Japan Magazine and Book Publisher's and Editor's Association (AJPEA) released a report on February 24 that estimated that the combined physical and digital sales of the manga industry in Japan amounted to 445.4 billion yen* (about US$3.91 billion) in 2016. ″ (*2.98 Billion in British Pounds).

How could this happen in the West, if we wanted it to?

A good example of a creator from the West who has already put this into practice is J. K. Rowling. She is the individual creator of her franchise, is personally involved in her creations and has more creative control than  if a big company had ownership (e.g.- Marvel).If we wanted this to happen in the West, we as a country would need to be more accepting of fan-work. A large majority of the copyright for work created in the West is controlled by big companies rather than the original copyright holder. This means the work created isn’t as personal as it is in Japan, and in turn could prevent many aspiring artists from getting into the creative industry. A good example of a creator from the West who has already put this into practice is J. K. Rowling. She is the individual creator of her franchise, is personally involved in her creations and has more creative control than if a big company had ownership (e.g.- Marvel). Are there any dangers to seeking a greater platform for the sale and movement of fanworks?

Using greater platforms would greatly benefit the fans of franchises and companies as it would mean they could make money off their fan art, and earn a living from it. While it would also benefit big companies in the form of free advertising from the fans, they would not see it that way. Copyright laws are a very crucial part of the industry for companies, and so would see fans creating their own work for the same brand or franchise as copyright infringement (breaking the law). Companies would see it as the fans earning money that is rightfully theirs.

Can you think of any other examples of fanwork that we might not immediately think of as fanwork?

The Bible. Or more specifically the fan-work of artist who created painting and sculptors of the events and people from the bible. The Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet Michelangelo was one of them. For example the sculpture ‘David ‘ created between 1501 and 1504. David was a character from the bible who was the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah. 

Another famous piece of Michelangelo’s work based on the bible was ‘ The Creation of Adam’ painted between 1508–1512. This painting is parts of the even bigger fan-painting of the bible, on the Sistine Chapel's ceiling in Italy.
