The Wretched of Muirwood and mentality
“The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors - that which it loves, and also that which it fears. Thus circumstances do not make the maston; they only reveal him to himself. It means that blessedness, and not wealth, is the measure of right thought; misery, not poverty or lack of Family, is the measure of wrong thought. A maston will find that as he alters his thoughts toward things and other people, things and other people will alter toward him. For you will always draw near toward that which you, secretly, most love.” - Jeff Wheeler, The Wretched of Muirwood
Mentality is everything, everywhere. Whether in a fictional world or our own, the way we think determines how we perceive the world around us. If we continuously have negative thoughts, then we are going to attract that negativity into every aspect of our lives. The same goes for positivity. Many people don’t realize it, but a simple thought can change our entire world.
One aspect I loved about this book is that your thoughts determine how strong you are and can be. If your thoughts are consumed by fear or negativity then your power from “the Medium” will abandon you. But if you give into and trust “the Medium” (or the process/universe in our world) everything will work out as it is supposed to, in the way you most want it to.

The Druid
My review for The Druid by Jeff Wheeler is now live.
The Druid is a 2022 fantasy novel by Jeff Wheeler. It was published by 47North and was released in May of 2022. The novel is the first entry in The Dawning of Muirwood. Eilean was born a “wretched”—a lowly foundling raised by the Aldermaston of Tintern Abbey. Then she’s chosen to assist in establishing the new abbey of Muirwood, now the site of a castle in the swampy Bearden Muir. Eilean’s role…

Book Review: The wretched of Muirwood by Jeff Wheeler
Legends of Muirwood 1
The Wretched of Muirwood by Jeff Wheeler My rating: 5 of 5 stars Amazon I got lost in a book Give me a reference for that one. As usual the author weaves a fantasy tale with familiar feeling passages that we recognize from our own religious and philosophical texts. Good on you Mr Wheeler View all my reviews

The Wretched of Muirwood
Taken from the back of the novel:
“The Wretched of Muirwood, the opening novel in the Muirwood Trilogy, is the tale of the orphan Lia--who is part of a pariah caste known only as the ‘wretched,’ a people unloved, unwanted, and destined to a life of servitude. Forbidden to read or write, and forced to slave away in the Abbey kitchen, Lia is all but resigned to her fate. But when an injured squire named Colvin is abandoned at the Abbey kitchen, opportunity arises, and Lia conspires to hide Colvin and change her life forever...
Her plan becomes a perilous one when a nefarious sheriff starts a manhunt for Colvin, and the land is torn by a treacherous war between a ruthless king and a rebel army. Ominous and illuminating, Lia sets out on an epic quest for freedom with hopes to unravel the secrets of her concealed past.”
Wheeler’s book was neither good or bad. It was good because it brought a new spin on old ideas. However, it was bad for a few reasons. First, there were several typos. Furthermore, some of his ideas are lain out in a disorganized manner--his paragraphs could have been far stronger if he had rearranged what he was trying to convey to his readers. Finally, none of the characters were compelling. I didn’t really care about what happened to any of them. Although the novel ended on a cliffhanger, I don’t have any interest in finding out what happens next. I don’t have an interest in finding out what happens to Wheeler’s creations or where Lia came from. I just don’t care. Although the novel wasn’t bad per se, I would argue that my view isn’t something you want your readers to have after the first novel in a trilogy. Thus, I would suggest that one only read this book if they want to take a risk on something new.
