that 11th hour thing that Brandon Sanderson does where suddenly there's 10 perspectives in one chapter so you see all sides of the conflict, what that secondary character is doing, how the big battle looks from the outside, a heartbreaking thought from a character who's never had their perspective shown, a moment with the villain, and so you can feel the change from "everything is falling down we're all going to die" to slow creeping hope as finally the protagonists start winning>>>>>>

I like shallan, but damn she can be such a bore to read about at her worst.

The panel in the last row is a top down view into the arena. Kaladin stands in front of six people, four of them Shardbearers in full plate all now turning towards him. On the far left is Relis in his black plate holding a big shardblade. Adolin kneels next to him in the sand of the arena holding his broken shoulder. To his right stand Elis with a shardhammer in a grey plate, then Adrobar in a orange one with a blade. Further to the right is Jakamav in his green plate and the king's blade, Renarin standing blade- and plateless next to him.

Love that Word of Radiance literally opens like:

Shallan: Jasnah hates me now because I robbed her and is just taking me along with her forever because of some unknowable reason probably she definitely thinks I’m bad now 😞

Jasnah: *wrote to her mom to tell her about Shallan, came up with a plan to help Shallan’s family even though it would help her enemies, talked up Shallan to her mom to a point where her mom thought it would be a good idea to have Shallan marry into the family and started the betrothal process (but left enough room to back out in case Shallan doesn’t want to get married), got worried because hasn’t seen Shallan in five minutes and decided to sit on deck with her even though she clearly wants to be inside, told Shallan that she thinks the magical beings have brought the two of them together and they need to be together now because fate or whatever (she’s the worlds most prominent atheist btw)*

Boots! In 2022 Brandon Sanderson's art director Isaac Stewart asked me if I could redo an illustration of the scene I made two years prior for the leather bound edition of the Words of Radiance

So I tried for a new framing that would keep or even up the antics of everyone‘s expression, but would feel a bit more cinematic. The horse, of course, was the most difficult one to get to feel right and a lot of it gets swallows by the gutter in print. 😅 And I tried so hard to make it offended by Shallan‘s (loudly uttered) demands. Kaladin’s expressions also took a lot of altering until it sat right. I am very happy with this Tyn. 😁

The crowdfunding campaign for the Edition starts on the 5th of March on Backerkit. It’ll be very pretty with loads of additional art! (There’s also a probability of more art by me in there… 😉)

The Kaladin/Shallan/Adolin situation is not a love triangle. It’s a couple who love each other and also their very tired best friend while the best friend is oblivious. Every single time I read about Adolin worrying about Shallan’s crush on Kaladin, I’m like, Adolin, you also have a crush on Kaladin. That throuple will thrive the moment Kaladin gets an actual vacation and has time to think about things not related to work.

When Kaladin and Shallan fall into the chasms and they both know they survived because they're radiants, but they don't want the other person to know. It's hilarious. They're so worried about their own terrible lies that they don't think about the fact the other person is lying too.
