seeing a post complaining about where rook "belongs" with the companions bc bioware isn't including them in companion-focused promo material makes me actually achingly angry about the way ppl engage with rpgs in the modern age. where they need to be spoonfed by mommy game devs in order to be happy.

like i'm sorry. the part about a ROLEPLAYING game like dragon age, like baldur's gate, like elder scrolls, is to fucking.....bring your own brain to the table and fill in the gaps for that character. if you don't want to play a game where you have to actively engage in creating your character from scratch, giving them your own little backstory to influence the why and how they say or react to things, then play a game with a semi-custom protag (mass effect, dragon age 2) or, better yet, a game with no customization and you just roleplay as A Set Guy (witcher, disco elysium).

for example, i personally hate dragon age 2 because i don't like how bioware went from a relatively malleable protag with multiple origin backgrounds (the warden) to just...attempting to make dragon age into mass effect by giving us a singular protag you can change the class, gender, appearance, and choose the personality of but you're stuck with the same background and family no matter what. inquisition has its MAJOR flaws, but the inquisitor is a malleable protag that's more in line with what origins established.

"why isn't rook really featured in promo materials?"

because the second bioware creates their own 'default' rook to advertise with, is the second fandom becomes less fun and fans suddenly latch on to that iteration of the character and say there's a 'canon' way to play the game when there isn't.

idk mate the game isn't out yet and sometimes a protag is just Some Person who wound up at the wrong place at the wrong time. fucking have fun with it.

people love astarion from baldur's gate 3 even though he is ACTUALLY some rando with 0 connection to the main overarching story.

the gaps in characters like the warden, like the inquisitor, like tav in baldur's gate, are there for you to fill in. you can criticize the way it's done and handled in the game itself. hate the way certain things are shoehorned in without allowing flexibility. but to complain about the gaps existing period?? you're missing the point of a 'fully' customizable protag. are you that afraid of indulging in an OC?

the way some people react to and talk about games that are made a VERY SPECIFIC WAY to appeal to a certain demographic of gamers (people who can and will have fun with having freedom and not being entirely railroaded) is like....going into a peanut-free bakery demanding a peanut butter cookie.

Have u seen the news of Henry Cavill being fired from The Witcher for misogynistic behavior on set? It was released in a podcast today.

Sure, Jan, sure they're not using his popularity, especially at the moment, to make sure people listen to their sad podcast.

"He would try to overrule her and try to get changes made last minute across the board without her knowledge, which, if you know anything about showrunning, is completely fucked. The showrunner has to sign off on every minuscule detail down to the buttons on a costume. Female writers and directors were suddenly being completely ignored on set, unable to do their jobs."

Do they mean changing things like the line after Roach's death because he thought it was tasteless that there was a joke written instead?

Or maybe they're complaining about the fact that Henry's part in the series is more of a side character instead of the main character but, they have no problem using him to promote the show because they know he's the reason why people watch even, even more in season 3.

Or maybe he was a mean, mean man and complained about the decision to create a new complete original villain for season 2?

I can picture it:

Henry: Lauren, are you sure you want to create a new villain for the story?

Lauren: *in shock* Are you questioning my decision and capacity to create? Do you think you're better than me?

The Witcher books started with the short stories collections and, both books were Geralt centred. Yet, however, the show from the beginning has been 35 % Yen 35% Geralt 30% Ciri for S1 and 45% Yennefer 35% Ciri 20% Geralt for S2, yet S2 promo was mostly about Henry as the face of the show. I'm starting to believe he was cast only to be on the posters and premieres.

Quick Enola Holmes 2 analysis

1. Netflix buying Enola Holmes

Enola holmes 1 was still supposed to be released in movie theaters all around the globe, when Corona happened. That also explains the really generic look of the movie. Now Netflix owns Enola, and we already see a strong shift from a brighter cinema tone to the classic Netflix lightning.

Everything went more mute. Also

This could be every other Netflix show: Shadow and Bone, The Witcher or The Irregulars. I know some people can not stand that lightning. I love it.

Also compare it to this scenes from movie 1:

I think the difference couldn’t be more clear.

Also Enola now refelcts MBB real age. MBB pretending to be a young teenager in movie 1 never really worked for me. Now she looks like the woman she is and I think that is okay because it will give the story and the storytellers more freedom

2. The promo

We also see a drastic change in promo. The promo for movie 1 strongly played with the flower symblism (which is an important part of Enolas character btw) and the whole: “looking for clues in paintings and letters” That was also reflected in the promo. You can see the Ivys on Eudorias dress.

3. Characters that weren’t in the book

Both the little Lord and Enolas Mother are not featured in book 2. Enolas mother appears in book 6 again, the little Lord in Book 7. the first time Enola and Sherlock work on a case together is also Book 7. Instead we do not see Lady Cecily or John Watson in the promo who both appear in book 2.

TL:DR: I think they will tell a completly new story which will have nothing to do with the books anymore. Making a strong shift from: “Enola looks for clues in flowers” to a crime drama involving Enola, the little Lord and Sherlock

the way this fandom goes so hard for the white guys and i, a queer woman, do not care for them at all 😩😩😩 i just wish people would take a look at their biases and start giving all the awesome ladies/POC the love they deserve. it's especially infuriating because i see so many queer people in fandom yet they keep only caring about these same white dudes when so many other ships are equally as queer and awesome.

But—-but the white dudes are queer so it’s representation 🥺

Okay but I think it comes down to a few things

1) white mlm is comfortable for people - you don’t have to step outside your box and consider the impact of writing characters of color and women

For example when writing female characters you have to be aware of stereotypes and how to avoid them in your writing, you have to be open to listening to people and to understanding that you have bias and be willing to confront it

2) white mlm is ultimate escapism - since white men are incredibly privileged in Western society, fandom can escape IRL problems and project them onto someone whose issues aren’t as systemic but more individual

For example, when you write a female character you might have to think about sexualisation or sexual assault or other possible traumas the character might have gone through and it might be too personal for you. But a white male character can hold your trauma and projection without being too personal. There’s still that layer of separation.

3) white mlm is easy to sexualize and write with little critique - not many people are coming to bat talking about how white men should not be portrayed in these ways even when there are harmful mlm tropes

For example. In many fandoms, every gay men MUST be classified as a top or bottom and physical appearance and femininity always makes a man a soft boi uwu. This is mostly allowed because white men are seen as privileged so sexualizing them and stereotyping them is seen as a reclamation of societal power. When it comes to characters of color and female characters, people are much faster to call out harmful tropes which creates this idea that white mlm characters are better playgrounds for fandom.

Overall it comes down to the idea that including women and characters of color in fandom takes works on the part of white fans. It takes the acknowledge that we have societal bias against poc and that sometimes our “preferences” for characters and ships are racist and/or sexist. It takes time to actually talk to fans of color and creators to see how to be more inclusive. It takes an understanding of harmful stereotypes and how the media perpetuates them.

At the end of the day, it’s work. And many creators and fans would rather have white mlm that is relatively free of criticism and very easy escapism than try and address why fandom is so white and so male-character heavy, in both who fans are and in the transformative work fans create.

Because the media sees fandom. And when media staring women and characters always ends up circling back to white men, media notices that and makes note that white men are more marketable. And it’s true. If you were looking to have a popular piece of media and you include two white men with a throwaway line or two about a deep connection, that is far more likely to garner a following and a fandom than say, a show with a queer woman of color.

It’s why Teen Wolf had queer-bait Derek/Stiles promo clips. It’s why The Witcher Twitter account makes things like the Jaskier-trailer and photoshoot. It’s why Supernatural became more popular after they queerbaited their entire audience.

Even in shows like the Witcher where a lot of the cast is either characters of color, women, or both, the fandom focuses strongly on white men and has the most extensive headcanons, fanfiction and even fanart for those characters.

Being inclusive in fandom takes work. And for many people, it’s simply easier to maintain the status quo.

Video Games Pt3: Video Game Challenge

I saw this list on Pinterest out of nowhere, and what better way to ring in the new year than with another questionnaire, about my favorite pastime! This is the spiritual successor to Part 1 and Part 2.

Day 1 - Very first video game: Pacman and/or Mortal Kombat and/or Samurai Shodown on arcade machines (way back in the day when laundromats had arcade machines and gumball machines and such in them--good times, good times U_U); Tetris on computers; and a buttload of PS1 titles (again: back in the good ole days when consoles came with promo demo discs--I had Frogger, Need for Speed, Medieval, and a bunch of others).

Day 2 - Your favorite character: Here’s my Top 10 Males post and Top 10 Females post.

Day 3 - A game that is underrated: I will preach the greatness of PS1′s Legend of Dragoon till my dying day. It was doomed to dwell in Final Fantasy 7′s shadow, which came out earlier that same year, and it’s a real shame, cuz LoD was E V E R Y T H I N G.

My favorite aspects of the game are:

Its lore and worldbuilding. On top of the fact that the premise of the game is could be an anime series in its own right, you just get SO EXCITED to visit each new location, and uncover more about the world’s history, and see the different architecture, technologies, cultures and different races (I LOVE the Winglies, of course). It’s actually a gorgeous game for its time.

The combat -- I STILL have some of the Addition patterns memorized to this very day! They get progressively harder as you level up, but once you get used to the timing you feel so dang good. Die, More and More!

The soundtrack and cutscenes. The NOSTALGIA? O_O Bruh. The story is just really good, and was the very first video game to make me cry when certain...events...happened. Play the game and find out for yourself!

Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game: The Sims, Dragon Age...any and all EA games. Effing ashamed of myself every time I give that nest of corporate demons at Electronic Farts money. “Surprise mechanics” my arse. 

Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were): Has Jar Jar Binks been in a video game yet? Then that’s me. XD But I wish I was most like Lara Croft, as explained in my Top 10 Females post.

Day 6 - Most annoying character: For females it’s Lightning from Final Fantasy 13, and for males it’s Vaan, from Final Fantasy 12. I don’t mind as much when supporting characters are effing annoying (Vanille, Hope, etc), but when it’s the MAIN protagonist?! WHY, Square Enix? WHY.

Lightning was just a negative nancy debbie downer. I wish they had swapped Serah and Lightning, I seriously do. I just couldn’t stand her dry and soulless personality. She wasn’t being edgy or bada** or cool or sexy or FANG or anything; she was just a bitter jaded unhappy wench.

And with Vaan I just effing hate that dude. Why was he even there? They tried so hard to make this pushy entitled kid relevant, but I was like no, the story could’ve easily been told without him, and I wish it had been; he’s a effing idiot.

Day 7 - Favorite game couple: Yuna and Tidus from FFX (hardest I ever cried playing a video game -- THE FEELS I TELL YOU).

Day 8 - Best soundtrack: I used to think it was Skyrim, but nope, it’s Witcher 1, 2 and 3. Just listen to ALL of the songs CDPR ever produced for the entire franchise, including all the unreleased tracks, and enjoy the eargasm.

Day 9 - Saddest game scene: Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice had me legit depressed for a good week. Get your tissues and holy water ready; it’s seriously effed up. The entire game is the saddest I ever played, jfc.

Day 10 - Best gameplay: Witcher 3, duh. Main quests, side quests, combat, dialogue, plot, graphics, worldbuilding, creatures, bosses, soundtrack, characters, Gwent, NEED I GO ON.

Day 11 - Gaming system of choice: Playstation for life. But the Nintendo Switch is effing brilliant, ngl; once they put Skyrim & The Witcher on it I was like SOLD.

Day 12 - A game everyone should play: At least ONE Final Fantasy game. There’s 15+, and Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts. It’s not just a game, it’s an experience.

As much as I rag on FF13 and FF15, they’re still admittedly LEAGUES better than a lot of other crap out there. I just happen to feel that Square Enix is out of its frikkin mind lately, and tbh I’ve been rapidly losing my hype for the FF7 Remake. I was never much of a FF7 fan to begin with, aside from being a rabid Sephiroth fangirl and watching Advent Children a billion times. But Square’s gotta be drunk as a skunk if they think I’m paying all that money for god knows how many of these effing “episodes” they’re gonna piecemeal us to dangit death with. HAYUL no. I’d rather not get too attached.

Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times:

Day 14 - Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper: Huh?

Day 15 - What game are you playing right now: Speak of the devil, I’m replaying God of War for the zillionth time already.

Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes: In terms of graphics and story impact IMO might be Red Dead Redemption 2. That game was frikkin gorgeous, and the story was SO DANG GOOD. Braithwaite Manor!? O_O

Day 17 - Favorite antagonist: For females it’s either Edea from FF8, or Yunalesca from FFX. For dudes it’s Sephiroth, from FF7. That man needs some serious counseling.

Day 18 - Favorite protagonist: Yuna from FFX for the ladies, and TW3′s Geralt of Rivia for the dudes. 

Day 19 - A game world you would like to live in: The more Middle Eastern-inspired scifi/steampunki-medievalesque world of Ivalice from FF12, or the medieval French/Swiss Toussaint from The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine.

Day 20 - Favorite genre: RPGs and JRPGs, and pretty much action-adventure games with swords and sorcery.

Day 21 - Game with the best story: Red Dead Redemption, which is a good thing and a bad thing. A lot of the time I felt I was watching a movie, rather than playing a game. But it was still an Oscar worthy movie. XD

Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you: Technically it hasn’t come out yet, but from what we’ve seen of the Nioh 2 beta release, omfg what’s going on? U_U Now, don’t get me wrong! Nioh 2 looks AMAZING. But....that’s cuz it looks exactly like Nioh 1, just with new yokai gameplay thrown in. o_O Uh...is this a DLC expansion pack or what? Cuz it sure ain't lookin like a full-fledged sequel! :P Dare I call it an asset flip. Come on, don’t do this; do MORE. Unless this is actually an expansion you’ll sell for half the price. ;)

Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style: For graphics it’s RDR2, but for most unique art style it’s always been Okami for me. <3

Day 24 - Favorite classic game: Spyro the Dragon. Their reboot for PS4 was AMAZING.

Day 25 - A game you plan on playing: Cyberpunk 2077. I’m so bummed, knowing the game’s been delayed to September 2020 instead of April, but oh well. As long as CDPR gives us that master-class level of Polish we all know and love from The Witcher 3, then take as much time as you need, I guess. At least they’re not like effing EA or Bethesda. XD

Day 26 - Best voice acting: BOY. Freaking iconic, Kratos. :P

Day 27 - Most epic scene ever: Ciri beating the absolute tastebuds outta Caranthir in TW3, not once but twice. Most OP Witcher EVER, girl; WERK.

Day 28 - Favorite game developer: Though I effing hate them, I’m still a Square Enix fangirl at heart. It’s just saddening to see this weird turn they’ve been making recently, with garbage like the Quiet Man, and especially with Final Fantasy, my favorite game series of all time. U_U I’m not looking forward to the FF7 Remake anymore, tbh. I just hope FF16 is more of a return to form.

Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn't like, but ended up loving: Skyrim. I was never a big fan of Elder Scrolls games, and when Skyrim came out I was very meh at first. But then the mods started coming out for it and I was like wow. O_O

Day 30 - Your Favorite game of all time: Legend of Dragoon on PS1, Final Fantasy X on PS2, Skyrim on PS3/PC, The Witcher 3 on PS4, and The Sims on PC.

Episode 75: 2010s in Review (Part Two)

If you made it through the first part, you’d be a complete maniac to miss the second half--and final ranking--of our selection of the best and worst videogames of the 2010s.

Reid and Ed continue where we left off, finishing our survey of the decade and determining, year by year, which games we think deserve special recognition from the era. Les jeux en boîte, RIP

Je vous l’apprends peut être, mais je suis un de ceux qui achètent -”encore” faudrait-il préciser- leur jeux en boîte. Des jeux en démat, j’en ai bien mais c’est à force de promo offensives et de Bundle trop intéressants que j’en ai. De base, chaque nouveau jeu, je le prévois de l’acheter en boîte.

C’est aussi le cas pour Tekken 7. Suivant l’actualité du jeu de prêt, je n’en pouvais plus d’attendre et l’ai enfin eu. Puis j’ai ouvert la boîte. Et là, pas de DVD. Certes une jolie petite BD et une boîte bien propre. Mais en lieu et place des DVD que j’attendais, une carte (somme toute assez jolie au passage) avec écrit “STEAM CODE”. J’ai fait le rapprochement immédiatement et dans ma tête, je me suis dit : “Ah ça y est, on en est là.”.

Je l’avais un peu vu venir, “ce” moment. Entre l’affaire Metal Gear Soliv V The Phantom Pain (pour rappel, le DVD du jeu ne contenait que l’installateur Steam, rien d’autres) et les nouveaux jeux PC d’Ubisoft (Wildlands, For Honor, STEEP) qui n’ont plus du tout de sortie boîte, je me doutais qu’on allait en arriver là.

Mais, plutôt que de faire quelques tweets en mode vénère :” Le monde c’est de la merde”, j’ai décidé de faire un petit billet Tumblr et expliquer pourquoi j’achète (encore) mes jeux en boîte et comment je réagirai dorénavant.

Raison numéro 1 : l’effet bibliothèque

Je l’avoue, je l’assume : l’une des premières raisons de pourquoi j’ai commencé à acheter tout en boîte et à “collectionner” certains vieux jeux, c’est pour avoir une bibliothèque (ludothèque ?). Très influencé par mon père à ce niveau-là, dont sa collection de livre s’étale dans toute la maison (couloir, chambre et salon), j’aime faire comme lui : la parcourir, et piquer un jeu/livre et avoir un petit mot dessus. Autre exemple, j’adore quand, j’ai des amis à la maison, parlez jeu vidéo, évoquer un titre, parcourir ma bibliothèque et le sortir. Y a un effet grisant auquel je tiens beaucoup et qui justifie à 98% mon aspect bibliothèque.

Bien sûr, y a le revers de la médaille. Je commence à avoir un sérieux problème de place et je redoute le jour où il va falloir que je déménage dans mon nouvel appartement pour une durée indéterminée. Pour autant, je suis loin d’avoir les mêmes dimensions du problème que certains autres, à faire les vides-greniers et compagnie. Rappelons aussi que j’ai commencé cette bibliothèque depuis 2007.

Raison numéro 2 : posséder mes jeux

Je vais pas parler ici du statut qu’on adopte tous sans s’en rendre compte à cause des services dits en “cloud” : streaming, stockage en ligne et consort. Ces services, avec toute leur praticité évidente, sont au coût grave de ne plus rien posséder, de manière matérielle. Le cas le plus fragrant pour nous autre joueurs est Steam : si un jour, Steam vient à fermer, qu’adviendra-t-il de tous nos jeux ? A l’inverse, si un jour il arrive à sa position de monopôle, qu’est-ce qui l’empêchera de décider à quoi nous jouons ? C’est d’ailleurs pour ça, je me permets le hors-sujet, que j’ai commencé à acheter mes jeux sur Good Old Games en parallèle.

Pour cette raison, je mets un point d’honneur à avoir le plus possible mes jeux en boîte. Même si la plus part passent par Steam (ou autre), je sais que j’ai physiquement et matériellement les données du jeu sur mes DVD. Ainsi, de la même manière que font les pirates pour les jeux en crackés, je sais qu’il y aura toujours un moyen pour moi de conserver ces jeux.

Bien sûr, se pose après aussi le soucis de la conservation du CD/DVD mais cela est une autre histoire.

Voilà pour mes raisons. Vous comprenez donc que je redoutais pas mal ce jour où le DVD allait disparaître, l’air de rien, comme ce fut le cas pour Tekken 7. J’entends par là que, sauf erreur de ma part, personne, et surtout pas l’éditeur, n’a indiqué que la version PC n’allait pas être sur DVD mais uniquement par Steam. Même en boîte.

Et maintenant ?

Est-ce que ça veut dire que je vais arrêter de prendre mes jeux en boîte tout en pestant contre le monde ? Certainement pas. “Papy fait de la résistance” et tant qu’il y aura moyens d’avoir mes jeux en DVD, je continuerai. CD Projekt par exemple, a vanté la version boîte de son Witcher 3, même si cela est désavantageux pour eux économiquement. Si Cyberpunk 2077 sort en DVD, alors je prendrai les DVD. Sur consoles aussi, le combat est loin d’être gagné. Du coup, pour le PC, concrètement, je me renseignerai dorénavant avant d’acheter mes jeux en boîte. Si j’apprends que le jeu n’a pas de versions DVD (je n’ose plus dire “boîte”), trois cas possibles.

Je respect pleinement le studio, sans accroc aucun. Il s’agit d’une boîte que je veux soutenir, que j’aime, un petit indé, etc. Bref, ça me gêne pas de payer plein pot et de revenir sur tout ce que j’ai dis ici. Alors je l’achèterai officiellement, en boîte ou pas. Tekken 7 se place ici, typiquement.

Une société où je n’ai aucun égard particulier, qui sort un jeu ayant mon intérêt sans DVD. Alors je le prendrai sur G2A, InstangGaming et consort. Pas d’exemple particulier en tête mais ça viendra bien assez tôt, j’en ai peur.

Ou, si vraiment j’ai plus aucune race, je le piraterai. Oui, je le dis, j’assume mais je ne revendique pas. Je reste conscient que c’est pas cool mais si l’industrie décide ainsi d’aller se faire voir les joueurs, alors je l’envoie balader aussi. Si, par exemple, Resident Evil VII n’avait pas eu de version DVD, ça aurait été le cas. Le studio Capcom montre depuis quelques années avec sa politique houleuse de DLC et de choix étranges (comme le sort de la série Devil May Cry), un certain irrespect envers les joueurs.

Ca pourrait bien devenir une guerre de dupes mais dans mon cas, j’ai tellement de jeux encore à faire et si peu de temps que je pourrai bien tenir encore 10 ans. On se donne donc rendez-vous dans 10 ans, ou moins, pour voir comment l’industrie a géré et s’il y a un gagnant.

Gwent : la campagne solo a été repoussée à l’année prochaine

Le studio polonais CD Projekt RED a annoncé via un communiqué de presse (et un post sur le blog officiel du jeu) que la campagne solo de Gwent : The Witcher Card Game est officiellement reportée à 2018.

Inventé pendant le développement de The Witcher 3 afin de distraire notre bon vieux Geralt de Riv (aussi connu sous le nom de Gwynbleidd) entre quelques chasses et entrainements avec Ciri, le Gwent a rapidement conquis les joueurs au point que CD Projekt RED lui a dédié un stand-alone à part entière avec de nombreuses cartes, événements et compétitions. Alors qu’une campagne solo était prévue pour les prochaines semaines, Marcin Iwinski, qui n’est autre que le co-fondateur du célèbre studio polonais, a fait savoir qu’un report pour l’année prochaine était préférable. En effet, les équipes ont clairement besoin de peaufiner au mieux cette nouvelle expérience afin de rendre les fans fiers.
