Can you tell us more about the Island of Enchantment since all of your OCs came from there? What does it look like? How many islands (or is it like an archipelago)? Four seasons or two seasons? Any festival or national holiday?

Give us all the detail!

Okay Besh! It’s Homeland Lore Information time! This would be confusing but I hope I answered all of your questions.

So you see in this information was kinda explained by my MC Lynette in my Wattpad TW book tbh. In Episode 1-11.

So in this information here, the Island of Enchantment is composed of five islands, which four are stuck with one season all year around while the fifth one has all four seasons. All of them are ruled by the ancient dragon full-myth families which each of them are relatives to each other.

Each country is different and unique in everyway.

First Country: Springfield

The first country of the island, known to be 'The Valley of Colorful Rebirth'. This country is blessed with mother nature and is filled with different but enchanted and regular yet beautiful flowers. Some are mostly located in the mossy forests far from the main town.

It's known for its vibrant and beautiful flowers which it have some of the best honey along with the fresh fruits to eat and harvest and it’s spring all day long.

Each houses in the village may have flowers gardens from behind the house and some might be decorated in flowers as well, showing their respect to mother nature. Which is why you may see a lot flowers in main town.

It's famous for it's secret flower gardens along with it's mazes which each garden is hidden in different styles with different flowers. Which the tourist can take various photos from them while exploring each one.

For the festivities, we have:

A enchanted flower and fruit parade, which they would appeared once a month.

A garden pageant, it is hosted around once a week in each month. Depending on the theme, it would change as well.

The Fairy Gala (The Event from TW) because the fairy mostly hosted it there in the king and queen's giant garden in the Palace.

The firefly light festival. Where they send glowing flower up to the night sky.

And for the national holidays:

The Rose Ball: A rose themed ball night, hosted by the queen. (Spring Holiday)

The Sunflower Festival: A sunny day-related festival located in the fairy's kingdom in the forest, hosted by the fairy queen. (Summer Holiday)

The Amber Cordelia Ball: An afternoon banquet located in the main town. (Autumn Holiday)

The Ice Lily Festival: A frozen night ball located in the palace's ballroom to celebrate the winter flowers growth. (Winter Holiday)

If it has a nationality, then it would be Germany.

Second County: Summerville

Then we have the second country of the island, known to be 'The Village of Everlasting Summer'. This country is blessed with the power of the shining sun.

It's known for for its warm and sunny and rainy weather, summer festivals and parks, the beach, but their also the biggest producers of the best fireworks for any performances.

This country is more city and modern like than the first country. It's filled with hotels, apartment buildings, beaches and resort spa and etc.

Many of its people often finds ways to cool off to beat the heat of the sun. Like going to the beach and other ways. It's famous for their best beach locations to cool off during the summer.

For the festivities, we have:

A firework festival, happens once a month at the beach at each resort hotel.

A float parade contest, happens in the end of the month.

A beach clean up competition, if any beach and sea water is dirty, it would happen. Clean your beaches up for the sake of the earth and mother nature!

And for the national holidays:

The Aloha Parade: To celebrate the pride of sun.

The 'Lua Pele' Festival: To honor and worship the Magma God of the volcano, with moon cakes as treats.

The 'Momi God’ Festival: To create pearl-based jewelry to bring blessing to Water God, it was held underwater in the depths of the sea where the Ocean Myths hosted.

If it has a nationality, then it's Hawaii.

Third Country: Autumntown

And now we have the third country of the island. As known to be 'The Land of The Bountiful Harvest'. This country is when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably.

It's known for trees which its filled orange, red and yellow leaves and often falls gracefully to the ground, making a wonderful scenery, perfect for picnic locations, mostly located in the parks near the woods.

From its name, they have the best to produce crops. The soil in that country is the most fertilized, so anything grown there is certainly gonna make delicious treats. (Yes, more fertilized than Springfield's soil when planting).

The village itself is rather like a simple modern-town, but it has a lot of bakeries, sweet shops and even a lot of markets and restaurants due to their best selling crops from their best soil and gardens. But it has a calming atmosphere because they have libraries around the street of the town.

The people often visited this country to enjoy and relax the calming around in this country since it has the best-selling novels and book series and home-made treats to sell.

For the festivities, we have:

A harvest festival, to celebrate it’s best selling treats from their gardens or farms.

A book fair, to celebrate for their best selling novels.

The candy hunt, to celebrate Halloween in a candy-themed way.

And for the national holidays:

Halloween: Well obviously, it’s fall duh.

Pumpkin Fair: Well, who doesn’t? After all, everyone loves pumpkins, especially when it’s a traditional holiday.

Lantern Festival: To give blessing for their harvest.

The Day of the Dead: To pay respects for the dead.

If it has a nationality, maybe USA.

Fourth Country: Wintergreen

Now we have the fourth country of the island. Known as the ‘The Town of Eternal Winter’. This country is known for it’s long-ever lasting winter, even when the sun is still there, the snow and ice there cannot be melted either way.

The whole entire town is located on the top of the highest and the very top of the mountains of north and it’s protected inside of a very large and sturdy glass dome. In order to get there, you need a carriage to get there but please expect some very heavy snowstorms once or every week which is why the town is protected in a dome either way.

It’s pretty far if you ask me, if you see the dome up-ahead the carriage might stop at a bridge (Which it’s made out of ice) once you get there, you need to walk all the way to the dome’s entrance with no complaints. Just Walk with your two feet.

The town is known for its beautiful mountains and is the center for the theatrical arts. they have the best plays performed as well. They have plenty of theaters as well too and plenty of winter fashion.

People there are pretty easy to inspired when it comes to opera plays, they express their talents pretty well and in various ways, especially on stage.

For the festivities, we have:

A Skiing Tournament, to see who can win the fastest.

A Snowboard Contest, to see who can win the fastest in style.

A Ice-staking competition, for showing their thanks for the snow fairies blessing.

The Queen's snow fall festival, for show their thanks for their eternal winter.

And for the national holidays:

Christmas: Kinda obvious cause it's snowing.

Wassalia: A celebration for a peaceful winter night by sending snowflakes in the sky.

The Grand Musical: A wonderful musical show played in the grand opera, hosted by the king and queen themselves.

The Galactic Fashion Show: To show the best winter-themed designed clothes.

If it has a nationality, maybe Canada, I think.

Fifth Country: Crystalsle

And now, the last but not the least, we have the fifth country of the island. Known as the ‘The City Of A Thousand Magic Gems'. it's the largest country of than the rest and it is also the heart of the Island of Enchantment. Plus, it has all four seasons besides the other four countries.

It's also a known as a bustling and a large city center for business and the arts, and also the people who lived there are rather we're often mysterious, strange but sometimes full of surprises for their visitors but mostly secretive and friendly.

You might never know what they have in store for you if you come to visit this large and mystical country.

This country has better underground gem mine locations which they filled with different magic gems, which they are used for magical pens so they are rather different and unique in any shape and sizes along with it's magic, especially with it's products and be surprised to hear this.

The district of this country is rather larger than the rest so their are people with different status. Commoners, Nobles, either low, middle and high class and even powerhouses for the royal family. But they are all excellent magic users, including through physical and weaponry as well.

This is where the SIDC company is located and everything is rather normal but magical guys.

For the festivities, we have...

The night market festival, for everyone to celebrate in the market, most likely fireworks are there as well.

The great sports festival, often hosted by the schools.

The giant noodle creation race (Inspired by Pucca, lol), this was created by the Mitchell Family due to an accident in their kitchen.

And for the national holidays:

The Annual Championship Battle: It's where all the powerful half-myths and magician from all the four countries to aim for the top title championship.

Chinese New Year Festival: Well cause why not after all, most of them wanted to thank their god for their blessings.

The New Year: Yup, don't mind me guys. It's a must.

Crystalia: To create different magical crystals and put your wishes in it and let them float up into the night sky.

Spiritual Day: For a midnight prayers a d respect towards the deceased spirits.

If it has a nationality, it's hard to choose so maybe Asia.

Additional Note about the Island:

This place is rather perfect for school trips, so any different school will get an invitation for it. They will stay in Crystalsle before traveling to explore the other four islands toll they return to Crystalsle and then go home afterward.

And...

The Island is beautiful to visit but the communication is rather a problem. There are other species besides half-myths, there are humans and half-animals.

Unfortunately, half-animals cannot do any magic so they are rather jealous and even hate towards the human and half-myth races. Which it became a massive problem.

They started a mistreatment towards the two races which it didn't stop, no matter how the two races try to change their mind and get aling with one another, they will still disagree with them so the two races stopped convincing them. This would include the royal family as well.

What's matter worse is that many accidents and even counts murder and violence which it was caused by the half-animals. Bullying, Kidnapping, Murder and etc. Those half-animals showed no regrets about it until the five dragons were furious and had enough of it...

...which the Judgement Court System as has been created along with the SIDC company (Inspired by Ace Attorney Gameplay Series).

Half-animals tried to ignore them until the eldest dragon do Crystalsle will even put an execution, which is getting eaten alive by the beat hidden in the dark woods, which it was named 'It'... It's real name was forbidden to say.

Many guilts had piled up till one accidental death, the person's mother due to her ways of raising her child, which they had accidentally ended a certain half-myth's life and was put to court which they ended up insulting the king and put it too far... Which an execution was made... And she's died by the beast, only on one night alone...

This gave the half-animals a dose of reality realizing the sins they have committed and wanted their king to forgive them but... Alas... What they have did for the people and myth who can use magic was never forgotten, and it never will.

To those half-animals who have committed to even something worse than anything else, it will forever haunt them and peace never came to their life.

This has been this way for the whole Island of Enchantment for a long time now. But both the human race and the half-myth race prayed that the communication will be fixed and they hoped... One day...

They will get along with the half-animals, so that no one will suffer from their own sins that they have created ever since from the beginning.

People in Kattegat were trying to prepare everything for the summer celebration, a huge sacrifice was being organized in honor of Frey, a huge banquet was being prepared as well. Queen Aslaug wanted every little thing perfect.

But Ivar only had one thing in mind. You. He wanted to invite you to be his special guest. Since you two were children, you were one of the few friends he had. But lately you two didn't spend much time together because he was spending much time training with his brothers. Ivar missed you, your company always was something that lit up his day. Ivar missed you and he hoped you miss him too.

He was nervous, he was insecure and deep in his bones he feared rejection. Since that episode with Margrethe he was terrified with the idea to be alone with a woman again. Also, there was another reason to fear. He always had feelings for you, but again, he was too scared to tell you. And now? You grown up into a beautiful woman. Delicate and precious like a winter flower. And the idea of hurting you somehow was something that scared the shit out of him.

Still, he decided he would talk to you that day, he just needed the perfect opportunity to do it so. That was the exactly why he was following you around the streets of Kattegat. He wanted to talk to you in privacy, but you were too scared to even notice that he was literally in your ankles. Or at least was what he thought.

“What do you want, Ivar?” you asked when you bought the final ingredient you were looking for.

He was surprised, but obviously, he didn't let you know. “How are you, my dear Y/N?”

“Fine and you, my prince?” you said nonchalantly.

You never called him by his title, except when you were angry.

“I want to talk to you about the summer celebrations,”

“I'm listening,” you said.

“I want you to...” he took a deep breath before continuing, “I want you to be my special guest.”

You blushed. You weren't expecting this, and you knew Ivar too well to know that he was nervous and insecure. It was written over his face.

“Can we go to the shore?” you asked.

He nodded and you made your way to the shore. Once you sat at his side you smiled when you noticed that he was still tense.

“Are you nervous, Ivar?” you teased.

“Of course not,” he tried but didn't convince you.

“Women would be insane if they don't accept such an honor,” you said and caressed his cheekbone lightly. You smiled seeing that he closed his eyes, it was clear that he was enjoying every second of your caress.

It took him sometime to process your words but once he did, he widened his beautiful icy blue eyes and asked hesitantly, “You really want to go with me?”

You hated to see the way he looked at his legs, like someone could love him less because of them. You knew that this meant that he needed assurance and you were glad to do it.

“I thought you wouldn't invite me if I'm being honest,” you said.

“I was afraid,” he said so lowly that you wondered if he really said that.

“There's no reason for you to be afraid,” you said and held his hand, tangled your fingers with his own.

He smiled at you and you could swear you felt your heart skipping several beats. Because Gods, his smile was brighter than the sun.

You wanted to stay with him on the shore, you wanted to lay down at his side and spend the entire day hearing the sound of the waves breaking on the beach, but unfortunately you couldn't do such a thing.

“I'd love to stay here, but I can't,” you said.

“It's okay, I also have some things to do,” he said but didn't let go of your hand.

“I can't wait for the summer celebrations,” you said and kissed his hand.

Ivar felt his heart trying to break free from his chest at that very moment. Gods, you were so beautiful. He wanted to kiss you so, so bad.

“Green or red?” you asked.

“Red. Always red,” he answered.

“Good. I'll be the one wearing red for you,” you said and leaned on to kiss the corner of his mouth.

You did this on purpose and Ivar knew it. But he held still fighting the urge to kiss you right there and then. He was enjoying this little teasing game, something told him that he could be very good playing it as well.

“I can't wait for it,” he said smirking.

You smiled and even with your legs slight trembling, you managed to stand up and leave him on the shore. You needed to prepare a beautiful red dress, you wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the summer celebrations, just to please your prince.

@mandolinearts tagged me to post ten songs I cannot stop listening to and then tag ten more ppl, so here we go!

Honestly, I tried so, so hard, but there are 13 here, and trimming it down to just that was painful. Music means so much to me as a (YOI) writer and a person - memories, emotions, headspaces . . . And a heads-up to artists I love whose songs don’t even appear on my list - Led Zeppelin, Gabrielle Roth and the Mirrors, Nightnoise, Jethro Tull, Rush, Pink Floyd, Queen, REM, Rolling Stones, Simon & Garfunkel, Styx, Tom Petty, The Who, Bob Marley and the Wailers, and many more.

In no particular order.

1. Spring, from The Four Seasons – Vivaldi. Because it may be the most exuberant piece of music I’ve ever heard, and makes me think of bright sun shining through windows on a beautiful day.

2. Requiem in D Minor, Confutatis and Lacrimosa – Mozart. Haunting and powerful on its own, it also features in a scene from the 1984 film Amadeus that still sends chills down my spine, where the dying Mozart is dictating this genius vision to the astounded Salieri, one of the few people of the time to appreciate just how talented he was. (It’s believed that Wolfgang’s older sister Nannerl might have been equally as talented – but gals in the 18th century, honestly, what chance did we stand.)

3. I Get Around – The Beach Boys. I love their harmonies, and I have the silliest YOI headcanon based on this, where Yuuri and Phichit have put together a pairs skate in Detroit based on this song to do just for fun. So many 50s and 60s songs would lend themselves to skating. OK, so Yuuri probably would not be into that kind of thing. But it’s fun to imagine anyway.

4. The Devil Went Down to Georgia – The Charlie Daniels Band. Why do I like this? I don’t know. Maybe because for me it blends the best of country and bluegrass with the ancient ballad tradition, doesn’t take itself seriously, and is rollicking fun. Of course Yuuri and Victor dance to it in 1393 in a castle in my WIP. If you’d like to know why and how, watch this space, because it won’t be long. 😀

5. Land of the Livid Dead – Nowhere to Run (Rayman Origins Soundtrack) – Christophe Héral, Billy Martin. Totally obscure, total genius gaming soundtrack. This dude/bloke took a different musical genre for each land he created music for, and totally ripped it and owned it. It’s got big band, mariachi, metal, didgeridoo – and this, which sounds like a funked-up spaghetti western. Utterly unique and strange and wonderful.

6. Johnny B. Goode – Chuck Berry. Quintessential 50s rock & roll, long before Marty McFly got his hands on it – though that was cool too.

7. Fotheringhay – Fairport Convention. I love Sandy Denny’s lilting, haunting voice. This song (about the final days of Mary, Queen of Scots) has been in my mind a lot lately purely for the mood, because at the end of my WIP, this totally captures it – sad and angsty. And a castle.

8. Who Do You Love? – George Thorogood and the Destroyers. I love rock & roll with a heavy blues base, and George Thorogood makes no apologies for borrowing from it. I have always envisioned this song as a sort of “opening titles” accompaniment to a film of my first fic, The Other Side of Sunset, where Yuuri and Victor are cowboys in the Old West.

9. Wheel in the Sky – Journey. I love Steve Perry’s voice, and this has always been my favorite song of theirs – there’s something wistful about it.

10. Solsbury Hill – Peter Gabriel. A beautiful song about leaving things behind that you’ve outgrown and finding the courage to reach for something new.

11. Reckoner – Radiohead. I was introduced to this song in one of the late chapters of Proantagonist’s “Winter Song” – Victor choreographed his comeback skate to it. And I can totally imagine him doing this, so much so that I see it in my head every time I hear this winsome, gorgeous voice. And Yuuri jumping on his bed in excitement, cheering him on from Japan as he watches on the TV.

12. Hold On; The Eyeball Kid – Tom Waits. While he has his clear influences, as every artist does (from the blues and rap to gin-soaked Las Vegas lounge-lizard nightclubs, always sprinkled with a good dose of the dark side of romantic Americana), he is completely and utterly a phenomenon unto himself, wildly creative and adventurous. These are two of my favorites of his that are less gargling-broken-glass than usual.

13. Sharp Dressed Man – ZZ Top. Another YOI headcanon for an 80s child. This goes through my head every time I think about Victor in his knockout suit in Episode 5, and I got to write a similar moment in my fic “All That We See or Seem”, when he gets dressed up to go and meet his crush (who, to his consternation, skitters away – how could he not remember that banquet where they danced together?).

Every animal face-off in BBC’s ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet,’ rated

The BBC’s Natural History unit is the stuff of legends. They have been producing beautifully-shot, innovative nature documentaries since before most of us were born, and with the weight of the BBC behind them their productions are only getting better. David Attenborough is a natural treasure in his own right, a brilliant presenter blessed with a voice that is now the gold standard for documentary narration.

All of this you know and don’t need to get from a sports website. But while Attenborough’s new show, Seven Worlds, One Planet, is being reviewed elsewhere, nobody else is willing to ask the most important question about it. Is this sports? And, if so, how sports?

SB Nation has you covered. We’ll grade each scene of each episode for aesthetics, competitiveness and difficulty, and give the definitive answer on what the world desperately wants to know: whether or not what we’ve just seen is sports.

Episode 1: Antarctica

The Weddell seal is one of the most ridiculous, depressing creatures on the planet. It is, as far as I know, the most southerly-living mammal, staying close to the Antarctic landmass even in deep winter. Since it’s a seal, it needs to breathe air, and so it spends all winter gnawing away at the ice to prevent its breathing holes from freezing over. Chewing ice all your life is a good way of wearing your teeth down quickly, and when that happens, no more breathing. Weddell seals, as Attenborough says, die young.

Why do they live like this? It’s simple: spending winter on the Antarctic ice shelves means that there are no predators able to interfere with the breeding season (which technically takes place in ‘spring’, but if any spring deserves scare quotes ...). Of course, that also means their pups are born into the most brutal environment in the world, and until they learn to swim, they’re left exposed to storms.

Seal pups have their mothers for protection against the worst of the blizzards, but when a storm gets bad enough, the adults are forced to seek shelter underwater. The babies then have to fend for themselves against the howling fury of an Antarctic storm. This seems unpleasant.

Aesthetics: 5/10

Seals are cute, but not very sporty, especially if we see them mostly out of the water, where they’re at their worst. And Weddell Seals, while philosophically impressive, are not the most visually appealing pinniped.

Also they spend most of the time in a blizzard, which dampens the appeal. And there’s video of a seal birth. There has never, in the entire history of the world, been an aesthetically appealing birth.

Difficulty: 10/10

If you tried to do what those newborn seals did, you would die 100 percent of the time. I don’t care how tough you think you are: you’d be dead. Maximum difficulty points.

Competitiveness: 0/10

‘Baby seal vs. blizzard’ isn’t really a competition, and it’s not like they’re fighting each other. NB: Would watch baby seals fight each other. Think of the floof.

Overall: 15/30

Not sports. Incredible, but not sports.

Half a million penguins jam themselves onto one beach on the island of South Georgia to raise their chicks. When the parents go off to fish, the chicks are meant to stay where they’ve been left. But sometimes they don’t! Naughty penguins!

Honestly, it’s hard to know what to make of king penguins. They’re beautiful, graceful animals (well, the adults are), despite what Herman Melville might have to say about general penguinkind in his Encantadas:

What outlandish beings are these? �� Their bodies are grotesquely misshapen; their bills short; their feet seemingly legless; while the members at their sides are neither fin, wing, nor arm. And truly neither fish, flesh, nor fowl is the penguin … without exception the most ambiguous and least lovely creature yet discovered by man. As if ashamed of her failure, Nature keeps this ungainly child hidden away at the ends of the earth.

But kings suffer when there are emperors about, and there’s no exception here. King penguins are like emperor penguins except smaller and shittier, and as a result it’s hard to take them seriously. Naughty penguins.

Aesthetics: 8/10

More floof balls! Except this time there are more of them and they’re not being absolutely battered by a blizzard, which improves things. Also, they sometimes chase smaller floof balls, and that’s fun.

Difficulty: 5/10

The penguin chicks’ jobs involve standing still and waiting for their parents to come back. This sounds easy, but y’all can’t even sit there for like 10 minutes without checking your phones, so ...

Also, a bonus point for one of the penguins being enough of a badass to peck an elephant seal. Incredible.

Competitiveness: 2/10

Getting lost is annoying, but not competitive. I guess at one point they have a mild battle over a small ball of fluff?

Overall: 15/30

Not sports either.

Find me a nature documentary about the Antarctic without footage of male elephant seals FUCKING EACH OTHER UP. That’s right. There are none. Elephant seals can weigh up 8,000 pounds and get to 20 feet long. They are angry, hefty and horny, and they hate each other. They express this hatred through squaring up to one another and engaging in teeth-bared body-slamming, and it gets extremely bloody. Even though they’re protected by a layer of blubber almost 10 inches thick, elephant seals frequently hurt each other very badly.

This all leads to some good television and you’d be a fool not to take advantage of it. The BBC are not fools.

Aesthetics: 7/10

If you’re into big hefty boys going at it, go ahead and give this scene an extra point. But heft alone does not a perfect scene make, and the sheer gracelessness of an elephant seal battle means we’re going to have to ding it some points.

Difficulty: 10/10

Imagine being fallen on by a four-ton seal. Now imagine that seal has huge teeth and is simultaneously trying to tear your neck open with them. Another scene which would definitely kill you, me, and everyone else who might ever read this.

Competitiveness: 9/10

An all-out fight over breeding rights between two monster seals? Yes. Yes, this is the good stuff. It’s not the best or longest elephant seal battle ever recorded, but there has never been a bad one.

Overall: 26/30

Definitely sports.

Humpback whales might not be the biggest whales in the ocean, but they’re probably the most interesting. Their social behaviour is (or seems) more interesting than the rorquals, and their hunting behaviour is also extremely cool. Here a shoal of humpbacks is concentrating a swarm of krill by using ‘bubble netting’. Since krill won’t swim through the bubbles they breathe out, the whales can control their movement, which makes them easier to eat.

This is a short scene, but it’s worth including.

Aesthetics: 9/10

I’ll be the first to admit it: I’m a whale person. Not, like, physically: the flippers would make typing difficult. But I’ve always loved whales. They’re huge, beautiful, and they do cool shit like make bubble spirals in the ocean. And these are particularly good bubble spirals.

Difficulty: 8/10

I can also blow bubbles underwater, but I imagine I’d be practicing for Gladwellian hours before I got good enough to herd krill. Also, imagine trying to fit that many in your mouth at once. Challenging.

Competitiveness: 2/10

I have to admit that a half-inch shrimp thing vs. a whale is not much of a fight, even if there are billions of the little fuckers.

Overall: 21/30

Probably sports? In my ideal world, synchronised bubble-netting would have a place at the Olympics.

Albatross? Albatrosses? Pluralising these things is annoying. Anyway, the scene. As it turns out, climate change is messing with, well, the climate, and that has had the effect of increasing wind speed on storms in the Southern Ocean, and making those storms more frequent.

Grey-headed albatross(es) breed right in the path of these storms, and that means that when chicks are left alone they have to hunker down in their nests against the fury of 70 mph winds. Unsurprisingly, many fail. And if they’re blown out of their nests, thanks to a twist of evolution, their parents don’t recognise them until they get back in. And that means they’re on their own until they can climb back. Are baby birds good at climbing? Reader, baby birds are not good at climbing.

Attenborough tells us that this particular grey-headed albatross colony is going through a massive decline. I believe it.

Aesthetics: 5/10

I’ve seen cuter fluffballs. In this very show, even! A bonus point for the adults being so beautiful, though. Seagulls may be ugly as sin, but make them large enough to glide and suddenly you have yourself some majesty.

Difficulty: 6/10

Ok, the windchill would be unpleasant, but I could climb into those nests.

Competitiveness: 8/10

The chicks are struggling against their own tiredness and lack of climbing ability. Is transcending yourself the core of all competition? Probably.

Overall: 19/30

Possibly sports? Mostly sad, to be honest. Here we have the Ottawa Senators of the natural world.

Oh, my God. This is possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen. Penguins are incredible underwater. They’re agile, smart and fast. Killer whales, however, are faster and smarter, which means the only possible hope a penguin chased by a whale has is to use its advantage in maneuvering to somehow find an escape route.

The cinematography in this scene is exquisite. As the chase is right up at the surface, with the penguin frequently jumping out of the water and right over the whales, drone footage lets us see the whole thing play out from above, giving us a full-field perspective on a dogfight which would make a WW2 fighter ace whistle in appreciation. This is unbelievable.

Unfortunately it’s also four orcas against one penguin. So, uh, you know how it ends.

Aesthetics: 10/10

I would hang this scene on my living room wall, and then stare at it for several hours a day. The sheer power of the orcas combined with the dazzling agility of the penguin and the overhead view makes this scene extraordinary even for a BBC nature production.

Difficulty: 10/10

Those underwater cuts! The repeated jumpings-over of whales. This is nature at its most difficult. That poor, heroic little penguin.

Competitiveness: 5/10

All right, so four big whales against one penguin is not much of a fight.

Overall: 25/30

Definitely sports. And although it’s tempting to ding it because of the lack of competitiveness, some of y’all will sit through the Patriots playing the Dolphins.

Melville would enjoy the role mid-sized penguins serve in the Antarctic food chain. They sit in the middle, eating small fish and krill and in turn being eaten in large amounts by the continent’s coolest predators. We’ve already seen orcas, so now it’s time for leopard seals to get in on the action.

Leopard seals are vicious things. They’re 10 feet long and their jaws are almost crocodilian, evoking thoroughly un-seal-like feelings when you look at the rows of big, interlocking and very lethal teeth. They like eating penguins. And, like the albatross chicks, climate change isn’t helping the gentoos — the region’s glaciers are falling apart, leaving acres of ‘brash’ ice between the penguin colonies and the open ocean. This ice is hard for the penguins to navigate, and perfect for an ambush predator.

The penguins have to scrabble over blocks of ice that could crush and kill them while being stalked from below by a hungry monster seal. That sounds like a bad day to me!

Aesthetics: 6/10

We’ve seen Weddell seals and elephant seals, but leopard seals are very different and altogether nastier critters. They’re not without their charms, though, and watching a top predator at work is sort of fun. Even if they’re extremely brutal.

One mark off for the bit where both penguin and seal end up on an iceberg. Neither is anything but ridiculous-looking out of the water.

Difficulty: 9/10

Depending on your point of view, this is either very easy — the penguins are sitting ducks — or very hard. Trying to scrabble through the floating ice to get to open water looks utterly miserable.

Competitiveness: 6/10

Some of these penguins put up a pretty impressive, and pretty surprising fight. Good work, little critters.

Overall: 21/30

Probably sports? Swimming is a sport. Climbing is a sport. Ice-scrabbling ... not a sport, yet, but we’re open-minded here.

Scene 8: Under the ice

Below the Antarctic ice, conditions are surprisingly friendly, and inveterate drama plays out in slow motion. Starfish and urchins are chased by huge predatory worms. Blind nudibranchs search for mates in miniature forests of sponges and anemones. Those anemones are hunted by jellyfish — or so the jellyfish thinks, anyway.

Aesthetics: 4/10

Cool, in a creepy, slow-motion way.

Difficulty: 2/10

Looking for food and mates must be quite hard when you can’t move very quickly and you can’t see very well.

Competitiveness: 2/10

Jellyfish vs. anemone is an interesting but quite one-sided battle.

Overall: 8/30

Not sports at all. Getting a look under the Antarctic ice is neat anyway.

Scene 9: Right whales

20th Century whaling, which happened on an industrial scale, nearly wiped out every species of great whale. And southern right whales, the easiest, slowest, most-inquisitive targets, were hit the hardest. 99.9 percent of the population was killed — but frankly it’s a wonder any of them survived at all.

In the years since the whaling moratorium, however, the tiny fraction of survivors has proved robust enough to begin a small, fragile recovery. It’s grim times on the planet, and hope is nice to have.

I assume you were expecting a Melville quote here, and a rather gloomy southern right whale (still gloomier after it has its head removed) does indeed make an appearance in Moby-Dick. But, friends, I refuse to be that predictable.

Aesthetics: 2/10

Right whales are ugly, ponderous things, devoid of the grandeur of rorquals and humpbacks. And the bay in which this scene is shot is also too murky for good filming.

Difficulty: 0/10

Competitiveness: 0/10

Nothing happens!

Overall: 2/30

Pretty much the least sports possible. But a) it’s good to hear that the whale population is starting to recover and b) there was still more action than in that San Francisco-Washington game a few weeks back.

Two are definitely sports, three probablies, and four nos. That’s not a bad rate, and to be honest it’s a fantastic nature show and you should watch it, even if you’re mostly in it for the sports. Also, and I don’t want this to sound like a throwaway note at the end of an article, even though it is: CLIMATE CHANGE IS TERRIBLE AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. AS A COLLECTIVE, NOT JUST INDIVIDUALS. ME COMPOSTING DOESN’T SEEM TO BE DOING SHIT. Thanks.
