Buying a sequel book as an A-mancer is like being a bumblebee throwing yourself at a glass window pane trying to fly through like "this time. this time. this time"

something something rebecca can't stand to look at amelia's face for too long because of the coldness and detachment she sees in her eyes, rook's eyes. he never looked at her with anything but love.
something something rebecca can't stand to hear amelia talk for too long because sometimes she'll say something brave and admirable, and it's like rook is speaking to rebecca through her. it's too much to bear.

Quick question for people's twc detectives: in what ways have they changed for the better after meeting and joining ub? And have some aspects of them changed for the worse?👀

I’m pretty sure someone (@wayhavenots I think) has already talked about this but I think Wayhaven would have had more of a punch if the detective was an investigative journalist instead. The Bobby drama would be crazy, the guilt of having to hide this huge secret when your job is literally to uncover secrets, plus, you can just be nosy as hell instead of being a cop. I am seeing no downsides to this.

It's done! Attempt number two at book making is complete! It's still just Ethan's Wayhaven Book 1 run. I did a big overhaul of the typeset compared to the first one, which I was trying to make small to minimize the page count. This came out about 130 pages longer and the text seems to breathe much better now. I also added a couple of basic graphics, a moon in the chapter headings and little moons as section headings. I used variegated red embroidery thread for sewing the signatures for just a pop of ominous color between the pages. It is a game about vampires after all.
Working with paper instead of cloth for the cover was a mixed bag. It looks gorgeous in a way I couldn't do with cloth but it was harder to get just right and I'm not sure it will hold up the best long term. But as a second attempt, that's ok. I tried new things and learned new things this one which was the goal and overall I think it's a more attractive finished product, or at least more visually interesting.
The breakdown on mistakes is under the cut. It's mostly for my benefit so I can remember later but please learn from my learning if you would like!
First off here's a comparison of my first and second attempts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The paper I used for the first wasn't exactly 8.5x11 as noted before and I think it was even narrower than I realized before I tried to trim the pages. It is a significantly shorter book! Also the typeset differences. I'm really happy with how the new one came out.
Mistakes and improvement for the future.
Paper, Paper, Paper - I didn't even attempt to use interesting paper for this, just regular printer paper. Not needing to worry about trimming was so nice. I bought 9x12 sketch paper thinking it would fit in my printer, it did not, and I wasn't going to trim every single page to size so I have that now in my crafting pile. Maybe I'll make some blank journals with it. I do like the slightly off white color and heavier weight of the paper I used the first time and if I put in a fancy paper order I'll take that into consideration.
Paper: Part 2 - I want the scrapbook paper I have to be heavier and the cardstock to be lighter. Once I put glue on the paper it was so hard to work with because it wanted to wrinkle but also felt like it might tear if I tried to smooth it too much or reposition it. I ended up backing the piece on the front cover with a piece of printer paper and that seemed to help.
Mull - I've been using cheesecloth. I didn't starch it last time so I tried that this time but also saw something about putting glue over the whole piece of mull first then attaching it instead of holding it over the spine and dabbing/brushing glue on top. Bad choice. The mull is a mess and it isn't flat on spine, it was weird and stiff and there's slight gaps in between signatures as a result. I couldn't rip it off though so it is what it is. Won't be doing that again in the future though. Minus the mull issue I was really happy with the textblock though.
Endpapers - Again fighting the thinner craft paper. I should have sewn these on but I didn't. However I couldn't add them later because of the mull issue once I realized that so they are fully glued to the first page for added strength instead of being tipped on. Making them then and sewing them on takes more time but might be the better route to go in the future.
Gluing - I feeling like have terrible gluing technique. Things feel too wet but then if I use less or add some water for easier brushing on it doesn't stick as well. I think this is just a practice thing but considering how much gluing there is, it is a little frustrating.
Labels - Tried that for the first time with paper. Not sure how I feel about it . I think it looks alright but mostly it was about the paper quality and durability. Story of this build.
The Casing In - It was not great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The back is alright but I really messed up the front cover. I think I pushed it too far back into the hinge so the cover doesn't quite close all of the way and is why there's such a large fore edge wrap space. I also think I made my spine piece slightly too narrow so that didn't help either. Ah well. Warping could also be from needing to glue the extra backing paper to the cover paper first and it's just too much glue pull in one area with nothing to balance it.
She's done though and once again I'm carrying over lots good knowledge for the next one. If I saw it sitting on someone else's shelf and they told me they made it I would be super impressed so I should give myself that credit as well.

It is objectively more funny to think that M has multiples of the same clothes because they are the least irritating on their senses, BUT ALSO i cannot believe that M wouldn't dress up sometimes with their love for keeping up the "aesthetic".
Tl;dr: M's outfit must: 1. have an alternative vibe to it, 2. be comfortable and easy to move in, 3. cover most of the body.

okay i kind of need to go insane about this rebecca line from book one because it's got me riled up LMAO
so, my f-mancer, flor, has the lowest stats with rebecca, at a whopping 5% so any biting dialogue option at their mom's expense is immediately smashed

to tell your mother pretty plainly "i'm good. i don't need you. you were never there for me, " and for her to say "that's not true. i've always loved you," is so? indicative of her character imo?
she doesn't listen to the detective even when they're being straight up direct with her – for me, this interaction negates any of the good rebecca's been trying to do, whether or not she thinks she's coming across as genuine in making amends. how are you going to tell your own child that they're wrong? that what they experienced (a childhood full of loneliness, loss, and forced independence) isn't the full story (your mother loved you from afar but never made the conscious effort to show it)?
it doesn't matter if rebecca was out fighting hand-to-hand combat against supernaturals that were trying to take over the world, she was *not* there for the detective. she chose to be an absent mother! that's a fact! no matter the "good" she was doing for mankind
this whole exchange bothers me so much – maybe the writing doesn't exactly line up (that happens with choice based games sometimes, so i get it) but either way it's poor timing, and adds yet another layer to the complexity of rebecca's relationship with the detective

Where's that one ask that says that if Unit Bravo had the opportunity to become human again, M and N would take it and A and F wouldn't?
Because this kinda aligns with that:

When you go to save Sanja with either N and M or A and F, these are the options that show up (respectively).
*this is the option that checks the people stat btw

Adam du Mortain x F!Detective
Disclamer: These characters do not belong to me, they belong to The Wayhaven Chronicles, an amazing interactive fiction game from #seraphinitegames. If you don't know it yet and enjoy well-written romance games, I advise you to take a look.
This is just a drabble of an idea that popped into my head during lunch time. Fluff. May contain personality/traits spoilers if you haven't read Adam's route yet.
Wordcount: 866
After everything that's happened you'd think staying in the same room as Adam would have little effect on you by now. But that is not the case. As we wait in silence for the rest of the team to join us I wonder if my living room has become even smaller since the last time I sat here. The tension and heat in the air is sizzling, merely from being in the same confined space together.
I steal a glance at Adam, standing with his muscular back to me, arms crossed as he looks intently out the window. I could never understand what he finds that is so appealing outside or if he's just always in surveillance mode. For a moment I think I caught his eyes in the glass’s reflection, but I am probably just hallucinating at this point.
I force my eyes away from the man that owns my heart and my every thought to look back at the folder in front of me. Stifling a sigh I reach for the pen, when I catch movement from the corner of my eye, a shadow crawling on my coffee table, creeping closer and closer. I slowly look at my side and there it is. Its eight furry legs carry it a few inches closer yet before stopping, as if taunting me.
My body paralyzes for a moment, my mind freezing at the mere sight of the horrible threat, before my legs are forced into action by springing me up and away from the table.
The movement as well as the sound of my fumbling legs scattering me away brings Adam's attention to me. In less than two seconds he's already next to me. Not that it would take him much longer than that to cross from one side to the other of my entire apartment, even if he wasn't a super fast vampire.
“What is wrong?”
The obvious concern in his voice, no doubt resulting from what I can only guess is my terrified expression, makes me feel even more pathetic about the whole situation. Nevertheless I point a finger at the disgusting creature.
“Can you… can you get rid of that, please?”
His eyes follow the direction I'm pointing at, his eyebrows lifting slightly as they land on the goddamn thing. It takes him a beat to react, but clearing his throat he walks up to the table with ease.
“Should I kill it or set it free outside would suffice?”
My brain immediately screams for the first option, but noticing the tinge of amusement in his voice I settle for the latter.
“Just get it away from me.”
I can't see the look on his face, but there's the slightest shake on his shoulders before he leans down to scoop the beast from the table’s surface with his bare hands - which I'm not embarrassed to admit drew a gasp from me, goosebumps erupting all over my skin at me mere thought of touching that thing.
Adam proceeds to move to the window to dispose of it outside. Once he closes the window I realize I was holding my breath and I sigh in relief. Adam keeps staring at me with a strange tightness in his expression, as though he's trying not to smile.
“What?” I ask, my embarrassment making me sound more defensive than I'd like to admit.
He shrugs, eyes downcast as he slowly walks closer to me. “Nothing.”
“Well, your face doesn't exactly say ‘nothing’.”
He lets out a breath that sounds a lot like an amused huff before raising his gaze back to me.
“If you must know, I was thinking that you are the bravest, strongest woman I have ever met. And I would never have expected you to be scared of a tiny spider.”
There’s a shadow of a smile on his lips and it only makes me feel more flustered, heat flushing to my cheeks.
“Hey! First of all, that thing was not tiny in the slightest!”
My outburst makes his smile grow wider, the breathtakingly cute dimples appearing with the sole purpose of making my mind go blank and my heart race. It still amazes me how one single smile from this man holds this kind of power over me. And now I'm flustered for a whole different reason.
“And… it's not fear, it's disgust.”, my voice decreases in intensity as I avert my gaze, ending in barely more than a mumble. The lighthearted chuckle brings my attention back to him, his expression is soft and his demeanor relaxed.
“Well, then I stand and correct it, Detective.”
The tenderness in his voice and the hidden emotion behind his eyes pull at my heartstrings, bringing back those shreds of hope I am always pushing back. We don't look away from each other, instead we smile as our obvious unspoken feelings hang around us. And it's not until we hear familiar voices growing closer that our bubble bursts and we reluctantly move away, back to our previous spots. But this time, as I look at where Adam stands by the window, I am sure I can see his beautiful green eyes looking back at me through the reflection.
✨✨✨✨✨
For this man I don't mind being a 🤡

listen I know book 3 has only just been announced but my bff and I have been cooking a masquerade concept in our brains for 2 years now AND with confirmation we ARE INDEED getting a masquerade, I drew some concept masks <3
1 is a combination of two 16th century Turkish masks. The headpieces on the temples are Syrian, coupled with a simple chain to keep the mask attached to the head.
2 is also based off a 16th century Turkish mask, but I cropped it to keep in line with more modern masks (as it is a modern masquerade). The headpiece - as well as the chin chain - is Central Anatolian (Konya, Turkey). The earrings are based off my own.
3 is based off the same mask, just with a different cropping and slightly different engraved designs. The headpiece is also from the Konya region. The earrings are 19th century from Syria. The chin chain is Turkish.
I haven’t decided which one I like best for book 4 but I have tons of time to choose 💀
