started watching delicious in dungeon/dungeon meishi (sp?). or as i like to call it
~*AUTISM COOKING DUNGEON*~
dear god y'all have undersold this to me. and like i get it. spoilers and all that. but holy shit
our boy isn't like... "tee-hee little-bit of autistic, just a smidge" like you were all making me think. no no. no, this guy is DEEPLY autistic. we're talking "normally we only give THIS much autism to aliens and robots" kind of autism. the "i need an allistic translator for my social fubars" autism (rip your sister dude). the "i learned a thing! so now im not gonna shut up about it for at least an hour" autism.
and they gave this to THE ONE SINGULAR HUMAN IN THE PARTY. this guy is a HUMAN FIGHTER/KNIGHT-type that is like the MOST BORING/NORMIE shit in a d&d style setting. that is "why are you even playing a fantasy game?" level of normie shit.
and THAT is who gets to be The Party Freak(tm)
i love it. completely unironically/unsarcasticly i love it. they took the "that much autism isn't human anymore" bullshit thats so prolific its basically a trope and went NOPE FUCK THAT NOISE
what i find unforgivable though is that none of you mentioned he's a Kronk too.
boy sounds SO SO STUPID but is so so smart when you actually listen to what the fuck he's on about now (and think on why he's on about it right then). he's a big tank (literally in the fantasy class sense) that just wants to help everyone and do his little special interest shit on the side. and it is on the side because the other two seem like they had no idea it was more than trivia until he didn't have to help micromanage a massive party. like this shit has clearly been on repeat in his brain in the background for A WHILE but he was so busy helping/keeping everyone alive it got shoved aside of his outward behavior unless it was useful. he is a lovable dorky himbo and NONE of you mentioned this.
anyway, i'm also loving the way this whole show is basically only like this because him and senshi are vibing on the same wavelength and the other two are basically just along for the ride to save their friend/part member
the whole thing has a Green Eggs and Ham kind of thing going on with it too. but like...environmentalist about it? like it was more subtle about the whole "hey maybe work WITH your current environment rather than against it" bit and then we found out what senshi normally does and subtlety just went right out the fucking window on that front.
i'm also liking the way it both explores the horrors of dying in a world where being brought back to life is common, while also kind of...poking fun at it? like its reminding me of a thing i heard something like "the difference between comedy and tragedy is how far from it you are" kind of concept.
like they are so fucking ... how the fuck do you spell it blase? with the little "/" over the e. that. the story is so bland in how it handles how people came back from horrific deaths and yet when the characters have to face things that remind them of their own it gets heartbreaking very quickly. but like...chillchuck. goddamn. we get just enough from his perspective that its harrowing but the way its shown to us the reader/viewer is like a comedy skit
cause like...its both.
these guys keep dying/nearly dying to THE. SAME. FUCKING. SHIT.
mage elf is slimebait, chillchuck is basically Dungeon Canary with an emphasis on mimics, and himbro over here is gonna get himself killed trying to pet/eat a new monster no one else knows about at some point. probably why his sister seems to have specialized in healing magic.
i know the fandom is thinking once they get his sister back that she's gonna be Just Like Him but i think it would be much funnier AND more 'realistic' if they were classic autism-adhd alliance but siblings about it. like him being better at staying on a task and her being better at navigating social cues and shit. and both of them with their own little special interest energy. i'm betting her's is magic. and thats why even magic elf is like "omg shes so good at magic i'm no where near that level" about it. i mean its also the lesbianism but there IS more to that than thirst from what i've seen.
anyway i'm 6 episodes into what seems to be 12 available on netflix and i'm already hooked. might have to see if i can get my hands on the manga or something too
#autism cooking dungeon#spoilers#just in case#and no i DON'T remember most of their names yet#i am TERRIBLE with names#i'll get there eventually but eh

Chapter 35 through the end of Gideon the Ninth
So if I understand right, the last door was the Seventh House door, the one that Cytherea used when she originally became a Lyctor, and Palamedes was able to tell that she'd been in there 10,000 years ago because of the "YOU LIED TO US" message that she left on the wall, I guess probably when she realized that becoming a Lyctor wasn't actually going to cure her cancer. And Cytherea hid the key and stopped up the keyhole to prevent anyone from getting in there to find out who she was, I guess before she figured out how to kill everyone
I only found one of those two times:
But possibly the second time was something else, and not related to that chapter specifically. Harrow has a good memory, though, I didn't remember that line of dialog
Not sure how I feel about Palamedes' weird relationship with the real Dulcinea, and I think Camilla is with me there
I love how this whole scene at the beginning of Chapter 35 is just Harrow and Camilla figuring out that Cytherea is not Dulcinea and Gideon completely missing the point of everything they're saying in favor of going "oh my god I've been trying to steal Palamedes' girlfriend"
You know, I suspect that is not in fact the reason why Cytherea was flirting with you
Ok, but why is Gideon asking for her sword here? Like, I think she is still on the wavelength of "I have to apologize to Palamedes" right now, she doesn't yet get that Cytherea is not Dulcinea and also is evil
If Cytherea killed Dulcinea and Protesilaus en route to Canaan House, why were the remains in the furnace a month old? I don't think they've been there that long
And I guess she punched out Mayonnaise Uncle way back when because he could have figured out who she was due to him siphoning everyone in the room
And then there was an entire long chapter of fighting, involving multiple literally unkillable people. Yes, there was some interesting stuff in there, some of Harrow doing cool necromancy stuff and applying knowledge that she learned from the challenges, but reading this was honestly kind of exhausting, and then Gideon hurt her knee and there was a bunch of text describing knee pain and I guess maybe this just me getting old, but I didn't mind any of the other descriptions of injuries or gore or etc but the knee pain was hard to read
I think I said way back when that I don't particularly like long fight sequences? Yeah, that's still true. But I appreciate that from a story perspective we had to completely exhaust their ability to defeat Cytherea and put them in a position where there was only one choice left to not die. I appreciate that
I also appreciate Palamedes and Camilla's relationship, and I'm guessing this exchange means that we have (hopefully) not seen the last of Palamedes
Also, it was wild that Cytherea is still trying to flirt with Gideon while this fight is going on. She's not quitting. Like, I know Gideon turns out to be God's daughter, but what exactly does that mean to Cytherea that she is behaving this way? I gather the Gideon that Cytherea used to know is either another Lyctor, or one of cavaliers who got eaten by a Lyctor
And yeah, I got last chapter that Ianthe and Naberius had some serious difference of opinion on whether or not Ianthe should become a Lyctor, and this is kind of fucking her shit up. I guess Gideon was right when she said the whole trial is about how good of a pair the necromancer and the cavalier are, and I guess maybe the closer they are, the powerful the Lyctor is? Only it seems like the pairs that actually are that close, like Harrow and Gideon or Palamedes and Camilla, the necromancer would never sacrifice the cavalier to become a Lyctor, so this is kind of a self-defeating trial. Like, I have to wonder what kind of people the original Lyctors were that they all sat down together and said, hey, let's figure out a way to absorb our cavaliers' souls and become immortal. We know that Cytherea just wanted to not die, and her cavalier was willing to sacrifice herself to help her. But what about the others?
Also, I guess Ianthe's skeletal arm is actually going to be a prosthetic? This book introduced bone prosthetics at the very beginning, with Aiglamene, I don't know why I never considered the idea that Ianthe's skeletal arm was just a prosthetic
I don't think Harrow actually ever got the last theorem, though, the one behind the black key door. Or maybe Ianthe spelling it out earlier caused her to figure it out on her own?
It is Jesus O'Clock, isn't it?
Ok, yeah, that's the good stuff
The last chapter of Gideon, like, merging with Harrow, I guess, was so bittersweet, but I'm not sure if Gideon in this chapter is actually Gideon's ghost, or just Harrow's imagination, but either way
And I guess Harrow was able to easily defeat Cytherea as a Lyctor when Ianthe wasn't because she was stronger due to her bond with Gideon? And also because Harrow knew about what Palamedes had done to her. I am happy that Palamedes had a role in killing her.
You know, I had thought that maybe the way that Gideon was going to die was that Harrow was going to become a Lyctor, and then I was like, no, Harrow wouldn't do that and that's the bad ending. But I don't know what kind of good ending I was expecting given that I already knew that Gideon was going to die at the end of the book
I cannot take the epilogue at face value. I cannot buy the Emperor as just a tired guy fighting a war to survive. This is a universe where they kill people to generate power for the elite, I can't believe that their god is a good guy on the right side of history, even if I didn't know like two things about him and one of those things was that he forced Cytherea to die of cancer for 10,000 years and would probably happily have done the same to Dulcinea
So, I guess this is the list of people who survived this book other than Harrow and Ianthe? Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed that Judith would make it, but it's true, we did not see her die on screen. I guess Harrow was wrong, and she does live to find out the answer to who killed everyone. But I'm obviously much more interested in what's going to happen to Camilla and Corona, and how we're going to get Gideon and Palamedes back, especially since apparently even God isn't able to extract Gideon from Harrow anymore. And then there is whatever Harrow and Ianthe and the Emperor and the other, I guess, three Lyctors are going to get up to separately
I think at this point, everything I was spoiled for has come to pass, except for Gideon coming back, but I think that would be a given even if I didn't know it was going to happen ahead of time.
There's like 40 pages of back matter in this book, although it looks like at least some of that is an excerpt of Harrow the Ninth, which I will save for when I get the next book, and then I will go look for the Dr. Sex side story

a/n: omfg this dynamic I can't wait to write this, your requests are always so creative and lovely! i hope you enjoy darling! <3
^ also this gif i can hear it just...hnnnnnngghh
Satoru Gojo w/ a S/O That's Like Inosuke
Ok um...you both are c h a o t i c
Albeit in somewhat different ways, but you both are still sort of on the same wavelength
How in the heck did he find you? Well...
He got word that there was a pretty powerful curse hiding out in the woods somewhere, but when he got there to take care of it, all he found was the remnants of said curse, and um...you standing over it, cackling
And it was just...love
You had taken care of a high level curse, on your own, in the middle of nowhere, and he had never heard of you before? H O W
Gojo had to admit.............he was impressed
Although he was kinda taken aback when you attempted to fight him right off the bat
He incapacitated you with a quick forehead flick, and as you fell, so did the mask covering your face
He was like O.O when he saw your face
You were so PRETTY
Anyways. That's basically how it started between you two. He brought you to the Tokyo Jujutsu school, did the whole shebang with introducing you to principal Yaga
You met the other first years and seemed to get along with them pretty well, though you constantly wanted to fight Yuuji because of...ahem, Sukuna
Megumi has a constant headache whenever you and Gojo are around
Nobara and you argue...a lot...but it's never really serious
Tbh, even when Gojo asked you to go out with him, you didn't think it was romantic
That is, until he kissed you
He loved the look on your face after, one of just pure shock and embarrassment
"So cute, Y/N. My little tomato~ <3"
Satoru honestly loves your energy, how you never ever stop. Your willingness to put yourself in danger to save others from curses is something he admires greatly
You two go to cafes all the time and literally buy out the whole place because of how big of a sweet tooth/appetite you both have
"Satoru! One day I will become the strongest and defeat you!" You tell him even as he cuddles you.
He just laughs and nods his head. "I look forward to it, Y/N."
Of course, it's never serious when you say things like that. You have an image to keep!
Gojo knows this, obviously. He finds it extremely cute
When you two go out together you do draw a lot of odd looks
You're both so beautiful to look at and yet you both act so chaotic
Yet there's nobody else Gojo can see himself being with
He can always count on you and he loves you so much for it <3
#eeeeeee <3#pls enjoy!#satoru gojo#satoru gojo x reader#gojo x reader#jjk x reader#jujutsu kaisen x reader

I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun.
Pairing: Wanda x Reader
Genre: Angst if you squint really hard. Fluff to make up for Marvel reminding me that Nat is dead.
Description: The falling in love of Wanda Maximoff and you. (If anyone has a better description please hit me up.)
Notes: Was going to be a one-shot and then it didn’t happen so there’s going to be a second part. It’ll probably happen in like a month though since I have a trip. Comments always appreciated. :)
- - -
You’re not sure when it happened. To be fair, neither is Wanda.
You had just started with SHIELD, and were there for the battle with Ultron, and then when Wanda became an Avenger. You remember the admiration you held for her, for her powers, for her determination to do what was right, her grit. Now, it was more of a well-deserved respect. Her strength when everything else in her life seemed to be gone, her brutal honesty regarding matters important to her, and her loyalty to those she cared about.
Maybe that’s when it started. As an exemplary agent, you could handle most things Fury assigned you, but being an Avenger? That was a whole new battleground. One that Wanda had your six on. From simple things, like showing you around the compound, and looking for you when you inevitably got lost (again). Wanda with her no frills attitude and sharp tongue, lashing out at Fury himself when he assigned you your 6th mission in 4 days. Wanda with her soft smiles that made your stomach flip and whispered jokes when she noticed your anxiousness on a mission. It wasn’t easy, keeping up with super soldiers, spies with years of experience on you, actual gods, but Wanda made it simple.
- - -
Wanda sometimes wondered if she could really be a hero. She wasn’t a good person. She had done terrible things. Then you stumbled in, a fresh agent and an even fresher Avenger, but you looked at her with no distrust. A little lost perhaps, but no malice. That confused SHIELD agent? It reminded her of, well, her. It may have been under different circumstances, but in essence, they were the same. Thrust into a world of avenging, knowing no one, knowing nothing. So she threw you a line, offered her support when you looked like you needed it. Wanda expected a bite, but she didn’t expect a tug back. The way you offered to help her practice her powers (a little naively), and then when you realised your mistake, your offer to teach her the hand to hand combat you had learned from SHIELD. The way you always looked back for her on a mission, even when you knew she could protect herself with said powers. You were on her team, a comfort she didn’t have since Pietro died. Okay well the Avengers were also her team, but you were her person, always in her corner.
- - -
It shouldn’t be this easy. Sometimes it felt like you could read each other’s minds. To be fair, Wanda could read your mind, but you knew she wouldn’t do it without your permission. Still, there was something about your unspoken agreements that came so naturally. Where everyone else was on comms, it was like the pair of you were tuned to the same wavelength, communicating in a code not even Natasha could decrypt.
“You just get me, you know?” Wanda says, as the two of you are sprawled on her bed after a mission. “It’s like our brains are, I dunno, smooshed together or something. Not even Vision feels like this, and we’re literally connected by an Infinity Stone in his head.”
“Smooshed together?” you laugh. “What an insightful description. And I can’t believe you just compared me to that toaster. I’m obviously way better than him.”
“You realise he can shoot lasers right?”
“And I can turn on a laser on the sights of my guns. Sit down, you’re not special.”
This earns you a giggle. “But it’s like you’re in my brain.”
“Oh so I’m always on your mind?”
“Shut up Y/N/N.”
“Maybe your powers are rubbing off on me,” you joke, wiggling your fingers in her face.
“I do not look like that,” cries Wanda indignantly. “And if you have my powers, what am I thinking about right now?”
“Stealing Sam’s cupcakes,” you reply with no hesitation.
I was actually thinking about how I hope Steve never reassigns mission partners,” she says pointedly. “But now that you mention it, I could really do with a cupcake.”
“I was right then?” you tease, tugging her towards the kitchen with a cheeky grin.
Wanda rolls her eyes at you, but she mirrors your grin and your stomach is swooping again.
“For the record, you’re my favourite mission partner too.”
- - -
Wanda didn’t expect to call the compound home. She stayed because she had nowhere else to go. And with her differences with Stark and the friendly but still guarded manner of the other Avengers initially (though she didn’t blame them), she kept to herself. But you were different. She noticed the way you prioritised her, looked out for her, to the best of your ability.
She’s shaken from nightmare and automatically, her feet lead her towards you. It’s late, she knows, but when she knocks on your door, you open with an easy smile and open arms that envelop her gently. When her sobbing subsides, you break away, wiping the tear tracks with your thumb.
“Dick van Dyke?” you ask.
Nodding wordlessly, Wanda lets you lead her your bed and settles in beside you.
That’s when she notices the stacks of files illuminated by your desk light.
“Sorry,” she sniffles, throat raw from crying, “did I interrupt you?”
“Oh those?” you say, waving dismissively at your desk. “Maria’s just been on my back lately to get those done, but it’ll be fine.”
With a stab of guilt, she makes to move of the bed, but you grab her wrist before she can. “Don’t worry about it, those can wait.”
As the TV murmurs softly in the background, you wrap a comforting hand around her, and she begins to drift off, nightmares warded away by your presence.
And she wakes up the next morning with the duvet pulled over her, and you slumped at your desk.
- - -
It was an easy mission. Most missions are when you and Wanda are paired together. Get in, get the data, get out. But then HYDRA agents were swarming the building, and intel definitely didn’t mention this level of security, and the exits were blocked off.
“I’m definitely gonna punch Tony later for this,” you groan, and Wanda shoots you a smile before returning to the approaching soldiers. Silently you whip around, firing rounds at the agents on the other end of the corridor. This was one of the many “plans” you had with Wanda, the endless missions allowing you to familiarise yourself with how your two fighting styles complimented each other. Being the enhanced out of you two, Wanda would push forward, handling the bulk of attacks with a flick of her wrist. You had her back, shooting at the stragglers who came from behind. Spotting something that resembled a server room, you gave a tug on her sleeve and she nodded, reassuring you that she had it handled.
Not wanting to leave Wanda for longer than necessary, you plug in the drive to do its Stark-tech thing and bolted back outside. To find the bodies slumped en masse on both end of the hallway.
“Guess you did have it handled,” you say, waving at the uniformed soldiers.
“Oh my god that isn’t even a good pun,” the witch replies, before continuing with a smirk. “But yes, I am way more powerful than you.”
“Don’t think that was ever in question,” you say, but then alarms were blaring, and the building plunges into a red glow and then oh my god there’s a gun behind Wanda and before you knew what was happening, a shot had fired from your gun and there was a burning pain in your shoulder.
The brunette whirls around just as you collapse into the wall. “Guess you’re not as an amazing shot as I am though,” you mutter, before blacking out.
- - -
To say Wanda was in a state of panic was an understatement. It was more like a whole damn continent. As much as she reassured you before missions, your easygoing, playful attitude was her anchor in these intense situations. Everywhere felt like home, like you two bickering on the couches. Your constant presence was like bringing a piece of the compound with her. And regardless of her experience as an Avenger, as an ex-agent, you were undoubtedly better with running missions. Not everything was a save the world type threat after all.
Eyes darting around, Wanda noted that you had indeed shot the last agent, before skimming across your bleeding out form.
The training doors opened with a bang and Wanda turned to the noise. Then she found herself pinned to the floor.
“Stay focused on the mission,” you scolded, before helping her back up.
The drive. You’d be pissed if she didn’t get it. Sprinting into the server room, she rips it from the port.
“Okay don’t laugh at me, but this is my hierarchy of the 3 Is.”
“Eyes?” Wanda asks.
“No, like the letter I. At the top is innocents, and they’re my priority. Steve says you can’t save everyone, but I can damn sure try. Next is the idiots. That’s the mission. ‘Cause I’d say you’re pretty damn stupid to go up against the Avengers. And finally we have Iron Man, or the heroes. As much as it’s going to hurt, we can’t let the sentiment get in the way. We all knew what we were signing up for, and I’m pretty sure all of us would rather it be us than someone else.”
“Thank you o wise one,” she mocks.
Wanda smiles a little at the memory, but tears pool at her eyes. Then she hears it, the faint footsteps pulling her back from her daze.
“Damn you and your stupid heart of gold,” she whispers, before flying the two of you back to the ship.
- - -
The steady beeping tugs you from slumber.
“Oh you’re up.”
You strain your neck to see Tony walking up with a bowl in his hands.
“You don’t sound very excited to see me Stark.”
“Not when I have to bring meals up here every day for Maximoff,” he says, pointing at the sleeping girl on the chair. “Hasn’t moved for days. Figured I’d hand deliver as an apology.”
“Aw did she punch you for me?”
“Worse,” he chuckled. “Gave me an earful.”
“I’d say you deserve it after that.”
He rubs his neck sheepishly. “Really, I’m sorry though. That was on me.”
“Don’t worry about it,” you smile. “I’ll be fine. And thanks for looking after her.”
Tony nods politely before leaving the meal and you two alone.
“It’s good to have you back kiddo,” he calls, before shutting the door.
Reaching an arm through the railing, you poke Wanda’s elbow.
“Meal delivery for Miss Maximoff?”
The curled up form stirs a little, rubbing her eyes, before freezing in shock.
“You’re back!”
“Apparently so,” you reply with a wry grin.
Wanda leans over the hospital bed, green eyes searching for any injuries.
“I missed you,” she murmurs.
“And you missed one-“
A slap hits you on your injured arm, and you hiss in pain.
“I’m not apologising for that one,” she glares.
Raising your good arm up in surrender, you pout. “Don’t I get a pity pass?”
“Not for worrying me like that.”
“But it wasn’t even my fault!”
She rolls her eyes (she seems to do that a lot at you some reason).
“Wait,” you frown, “we broke our perfect mission streak.”
“Are you kidding me right now?”
Then she’s hugging you, her nose pressed into your neck. Her soft brown hair cascades over your face like a waterfall, tickling your chin. Through your gown, you’re hyper-aware of the cool metal of the rings which adorn her fingers, how nice she smells, how right it feels to be held by her.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” she mumbles, her breath warming your neck, and your stomach is doing acrobatics. Even with the meds, you’re aware that this feels familiar, like something.
Pulling away, she studies your face. “Never. Do. That. Again.”
You laugh. “Glad we’re in agreement.”
It must be the meds, it must be.

linda for the ask game?
from this ask meme
she's incredibly independent. i've said this before but what the waid flash run emphasizes to me the best is that wally and linda are two people who want to be with each other but do not have to need each other. they're both very well capable of being on their own and when push comes to shove they'll go it alone if they have to. with linda in particular, she's a reporter, so there's more than one occasion where she goes to investigate something on her own without necessarily even consulting with wally about it (and they usually do end up working together, but that's bc they're stronger together as a team, not bc she's lacking in any way as a normie)
linda is, for the most part, a realist. it's a quality lent to her by way of being a reporter. she's not one to shy away from the truth and she believes in confronting it for what it is. and it's interesting bc at first it would appear that, like any other reporter, she values the truth in a pursuit of brutal honesty. over time, however, you start to see a linda who values acceptance of the truth bc it ultimately allows us to be true to ourselves and to face our greatest fears with the most faith. when the league has to reignite the sun, and there's a chance the earth may be vaporized in the process, she lets the whole world know, but she also asks the world to have faith in the heroes who are trying their best not to let such a fate befall the earth, bc they're the ones who are loneliest in the face of such truths. that applies as much to her relationship with wally, too, where she values his honesty even in the face of their greatest hardships so they can tackle them together
kinda connected to the last point, but linda overwhelmingly believes in heroism. one of the most crucial things about wally's flash run (at least before johns got his hands on it) is that he doesn't have a secret identity, so when linda falls in love with wally, she also falls in love with the flash. she loves him for who he is as the flash, and she wouldn't trade the life that they have together for anything, all of the hardships and craziness aside. she would never ask him to give up his powers or his responsibilities and she's more than willing to show up on the front lines and be a hero in her own right, with or without him
generally speaking, i think she's really good at dealing with all kinds of people. a good example of this would be how close she is with bart. bart and wally's relationship definitely improves over the years prior to teen titans by johns (which you should not read lmao), but linda has kinda always been able to hit it off with bart and she's fairly adept at communicating with him on his own unique wavelength that few people (even max) seem to understand. there's also the fact that she was able to break through to someone like wally, who was up in his head and sort of existing on a different, near self-destructive mental plane than everyone else for quite a few years before he met her
this is purely extraneous bc i feel like i've covered most of the big bases with her but she's kinda sorta really horny. i think almost all of the women in the flash fam tend to be on the hornier side than their husbands it's actually quite hilarious. wally will do something heroic like save the world or whatever and her first instinct in the aftermath of these moments is almost always to make out with him which YES does tend to be the standard superhero fare but idk. with them it's different there's just something More like they're ridiculously obsessed with each other and wholeheartedly obnoxious about it

「KISSED BY FIRE」
Wanda Maximoff/Female Reader
SUMMARY: Y/N comes from a small town in the middle of nowhere. She’s never known love or real kindness until she met Wanda, but fears she’ll never be able to express it. After all, someone as stunning as Wanda would never feel the same way about her. Right...?
AUTHOR’S NOTE: This started out as a writing exercise to get back in the practice of writing, so the entire first half is just somewhat pointless backstory of Y/N. Sometimes, though, pointless writing is the most fun writing.
TW: Implied homophobia (from bad guys), fire.
♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚: ♡ ・゚:
You always felt different. Different from your siblings, different from the other girls at school. It wasn’t a bad different, not really, not at the heart of it all, but still…different. You grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere, where everyone knew everyone, and worse yet, everyone knew everything.
And they all knew you were different, too. You didn’t connect with the other kids in town. There was always something lacking, like you were on a different wavelength. You’d sit there in your third-grade class and listen to the other kids talk about what they wanted to be when they grew up, and who they would fall in love with and marry and who had a crush on who, and you didn’t get it.
By the time sixth grade rolled around, a boy had a crush on you. His name was Alex, and he was taller than most of the boys your age and, according to all the other girls, quite the catch. He was tall and lean and had shaggy brown hair and all the other girls were quite jealous that he took such a liking to you. You, of all people! The weird girl.
But the weird girl didn’t like him back. No one could figure out why—not him, not the other girls, and least of all you. Why didn’t you like him? He wanted to know, they wanted to know, and you wanted to know. But you simply didn’t like him. It was like you couldn’t.
The older you got the more things seemed to come into focus. You started to realize what made you different. There was a burning inside of you that no one else you knew felt; not your friends, not your family, not anyone in the whole town. It was tenth grade by then, and you felt it not when you looked at Alex (who was long since over you), but when you looked at the girl on his arm. A cheerleader, with her short skirts and blonde hair and pink bubblegum. Her name was Rebecca, and at first when you saw Rebecca, you thought you wanted to be her. Or maybe be her friend? Or…a cheerleader like her? You wanted to be something to her, but you didn’t know what…not at first, at least.
One day it hit you all at once, a crushing weight coming down on top of you. If you had friends, a friend would have told you sooner, but you didn’t have friends, so you had to find out through an acquaintance, and even the word acquaintance is a little too strong. He was a guy, and you were a girl, and he’d sit at your table at lunch and bother you, and you would tolerate him because eating lunch alone every single day did, tragically, get boring after so long. His name was Zach, not that it mattered.
He told you the rumors. He heard one of Rebecca’s friends, Jamie, say it at church. Another girl had agreed with her, and then two boys did, too. Soon all the parents wanted to know what was going on. So Zach told you the things they said about you, the names they called you, what would happen to you. Where you would go—the same place “people like you” would go.
You cried in the bathroom the rest of lunch and most of the next period. Zach, ever diligent to a fault, stood outside the restroom door and waited. You didn’t care. You were different. The church people were right about you. You knew it. And now everyone else knew it, too. You were already weird, an outcast in a town with no past and no future. The fire inside of you burned brighter than ever as you locked yourself in that stall and cried.
“I know you’re upset,” Zach said when you came out of the restroom at last, “but I can help you.”
“How could you possibly help me?” you asked, puffy eyes and pink lips.
“The Winter Formal is coming up. Let me take you.”
Your heart sunk at the thought he had told you this with ulterior motive. “What? Why?”
“I’m a guy. If we go together, they won’t be able to spread those rumors anymore.” He stood there, waiting for an answer. And when he didn’t get one, he added, “So? Whaddaya say?”
That’s how you ended up at the senior Winter Formal with some sweaty, ultimately forgettable kid named Zach. Rebecca was there, too, and so were Alex and Jamie and all the rest of them. They all stared at you. They always stared at you. Nothing could change that. Not a nice dress, not doing your hair, not putting on makeup, and not even walking in arm in arm with Zach whatever-his-name-was.
The rest of the dance was a blur. The music was too loud and the air was too hot and you wanted desperately, so desperately, to go home. Then someone made a joke, a mean joke directed at you, and you had no comeback. Then someone laughed, and then someone else, and soon everyone was laughing at you. Kiss from a Rose was playing—you hated that song—and everyone was laughing, and your heart was beating so loud in your ears that you thought you would scream.
You did scream. Everyone else screamed, too, when a crack like a whip split the air and a blazing, radiant ring of fire shielded you from their hateful gazes. The fire was hot on your face, and the ringing in your ears drowned out the horrified screams of everyone else all around you. In a twisted sort of way, it was a moment of euphoria, almost. Everyone else screaming, the fire inside you no longer choking and burning you, instead burning around you, scaring away those who’d once dared to laugh at you and bathing you in its red-hot embrace.
You had to get out. So you ran. You ran and you ran and you ran, far away from the screaming schoolmates and the now-burning auditorium. You felt like Carrie from that one Stephen King book, only you didn’t want to kill people…you just wanted them to think you’d kill them. You ran through the night, dress shoes long since abandoned far behind you, and as you ran you couldn’t tell if you were laughing or crying, but it felt good. For the first time in your life, you felt good.
That was years ago, and things were different now. It had been a long, long road to here, but here you were, at none other than Tony Stark’s own tower. You still just wanted to set everything on fire, but you’d been much better about that as of late (at least, for the most part). You hadn’t looked back to your hometown since you left. You didn’t want to go there, and they certainly didn’t want you coming home, lest they have to break out ye olde torch and pitchforks and stone you in the street.
The air was cool tonight. The cold didn’t bother you, though. The fire that pumped through your veins kept you warm; or at least, that’s what you told people to sound cool. New York city stretched for miles in every direction all around you. Everywhere you looked, the city was below, and you stood up above them all, a hero. Not just a hero, but an Avenger. You’d come so far in the past—what, decade? Nine years? They all blurred together—that you felt like an entirely different person now. You were a phoenix who had lit herself ablaze at the Winter Formal all those years ago and rebirthed yourself from the ashes. Now you were here, surrounded by friends and fans and most importantly—
“It’s cold out here. You should be wearing a coat.”
Wanda. You turned from the city to look at her. She looked so beautiful tonight, but then again, she looked so beautiful every night, all the time, forever. You lit up inside and out every time you saw her without fail.
“The cold doesn’t bother me,” you replied with a smile that you just couldn’t hide. “You, on the other hand…”
“I know, I know,” Wanda held up her hands and smiled back at you. “Guilty.” She joined you at the balcony’s edge, and the two of you looked out over the city together.
Wanda leaned on the railing with her elbows, hugging herself for warmth. Without saying anything, you reached out and wrapped one hand around hers and focused. You focused your energy to your hand and channeled your heat into her, warming her to the core. She smiled again, and you removed your hand.
“I never get tired of that move,” she said. “That would have come in handy when I was a kid.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” she looked from you back out over the city again. “You know, snowball fights. Cold nights.”
“Snowball fights,” you echoed with a smile. “That sounds nice. I didn’t have many of those growing up.”
“Neither did I, honestly.” Her hair fluttered in the wind, which you silently admired. “Pietro and I…we didn’t have much of a childhood. The good moments were rare but…” her voice trailed off as she tried to put her thoughts into words. “When things were good, they were good. Does that make sense?”
“Plenty,” you assured her. You two didn’t often talk about your pasts. You barely knew each other, but the connection was there. It was palpable; you could both feel it. Maybe it’s because you were so similar, or maybe it was one of those connections that needs no divine explanation. Maybe you just “clicked.”
You didn’t feel different around her. You didn’t feel different around any of the Avengers, really; they all had their own quirks and problems and individualities, just like you. But then there was Wanda, and she was so…like you.
You wondered how much like you she really was.
Did she know? Could she tell? She could, like, read minds or something, right? Had she read yours?
The thought must have made you frown, because Wanda asked, “What’s wrong?”
You hadn’t realized she’d been watching you. “Oh—I—” you stammered out a response. “Nothing’s wrong. Just cold is all.”
“I thought the cold doesn’t bother you,” Wanda said teasingly.
You said nothing, and your eyes found the horizon again. She couldn’t know. No one could know. Because if she found and she didn’t feel the same way…You couldn’t handle that. You couldn’t handle the shame, or losing a friend, or any of it. So you stood there in silence.
“We should go back inside,” she said at last. “Come with me?”
You nodded. Even if you couldn’t feel the cold, she could. The last thing you wanted was Wanda getting sick on your account. “Of course,” you replied, returning her smile. The two of you started inside, leaving the cityscape behind you.
You’d only moved a few steps when Wanda caught you by the arm. “Y/N,” she started, choosing her words carefully. “What is it? You know you can tell me anything.” She stepped closer, and your breath caught in your throat. She was so breathtakingly beautiful. Her red hair, which complemented your fire comically well, fell loosely around her shoulders, and she watched you through green eyes that didn’t miss a beat. Beautiful, beautiful green eyes.
Just like that, you were at a loss for words. You were both such guarded people, and this…this was something you couldn’t talk about. You didn’t know where to start, and found there really was no place to start, anyway.
Not with words, at least.
You were suddenly aware your faces were mere inches apart. When did this happen? Who moved in closer to who? Were you both subconsciously drifting closer and closer to one another? The world seemed to spin around the two of you, dizzying you. The only thing faster than the world spinning was your heart racing when you saw her lips so close to yours, her eyes falling shut. As if by instinct, your eyes fell shut, too.
The two of you met in the middle. Her lips were soft, so unbelievably soft. It was a short kiss, meant to test the water, but it was everything to you. In that moment you remembered seeing her for the first time, the way you stopped in your tracks so in awe of her. Wanda, her power pulsing about her hands in crimson clouds. You, your hands alight with searing red flames that snapped at the air. You two had locked eyes, but neither made the move to harm the other, not even on opposing sides.
You’d spent as much time together as possible since. You were sure it was painfully obvious how you followed her around and went out of your way to make her happy, to do little things that made her smile. The weird thing was (to you, at least), that she went out of her way to do these things for you, too.
You were pulled from your thoughts by Wanda’s voice. “I was afraid you didn’t feel the same way, Y/N.” Her voice was low and quiet, her lips not even two inches from yours.
“A mutual fear,” you assured her.
“I had to know. I wasn’t sure what I was feeling, or if you were feeling it too, or if I was way out of line…”
“Now you know.”
She pulled you in by the shoulders and your lips met once again, less hesitant this time. Your arms wrapped around her and you tilted your head to one side. You deepened the kiss, your fingers finding the few strands of hair that fell down her back. You could feel her shiver involuntarily against you from the chill of the wind, so you pulled her close and shared your heat, your lips and hands warm to the touch.
You weren’t sure how much time passed. You’d never been kissed like that before, and when you finally pulled away from one another you were both smiling.
“Aren’t we supposed to be inside? What happened to that plan?” you lightly joked, still fixated on the beauty of her green eyes.
“Is that a complaint?” Wanda teased back. “Would you rather be inside with Bruce and Tony?”
You laughed. “I’d stay out here all night if I could,” you told her in earnest.
She smiled again. “Then I think,” she inched closer to you again, “we should stay right here.”
You were inclined to agree.

warning : my take on the characters. i haven’t watched the show in a while, and might be remembering them the way i want to, not to mention my bias because the humphrey siblings are my favourite characters, especially jenny, who i have become increasingly defensive of.
i think it’s interesting that alot of the people that have had significant impacts on dan and jenny’s lives are women and men respectively. with dan, it’s his mother, serena, blair, vanessa, jenny, even georgina, lily, the list goes on. with jenny, it’s rufus, eric, dan, nate, chuck, damien, etc. i wonder if it ties into their respective problems with their parents. as we see throughout the show, dan is clearly much closer to rufus than he is to their mother, whose leaving he still suffers consequences from. while i don’t doubt jenny deals with these same issues (albeit in vastly different ways), it seems she is much closer to their mother, whereas as we see she and rufus almost never seem to be on the same wavelength.
dan, as a result of much of his anger/disappointment over his mother leaving, clearly has abandonment issues, he “clings” to those in his life, he would do anything to make them stay (i still think his relationship with vanessa just being left like that is incredibly ooc but oh well, the writers aren’t exactly good at their job so), i think most significantly shown in his relationship with serena, blair and georgina (yes, georgina). with serena, as i’ve mentioned in a different post, he clings to the girl he once knew, to the girl he fell in love with, because he wants things to be as they once were (at least with her), if he doesn’t have her, what does he have left? (at this point, she really is all he has left, because he has fallen out with everyone else in his life) with blair, he is insecure, afraid she will leave him for chuck (which, ultimately, she does), so he gives her an “ultimatum”, me or him, he tells her he loves her in an attempt to make her stay (of course, this is likely not the only reason why he tells her, as we’ve all seen, dan really does love her, so it isn’t something he was just saying). with georgina, dan knows what he’s getting himself into. whether he ever had genuine feelings for her is a whole other conversation, but he knows how things will end with her. they both get what they want, and no one gets hurt.
jenny strives for control. much of her loss of control (or, never having much of it in the first place) is in part due to men in her life : rufus and chuck. of course, we should keep in mind she is only 14 at the start of the series, so it makes sense that she wouldn’t have the freedom her father offers to dan, who is 17 (or 16 i’m not 100% sure). however, we do see that at no point in the series, even when she’s older, does she ever get the same treatment her brother does. where she ultimately loses all her control (or feels like she does) is when she is first sexually assaulted by chuck. jenny doesn’t encounter this once, but three times. the second when she is left drugged at a party (or was it drunk i’m not entirely sure forgive me i’m not fact-checking lol) by someone she considers a friend intending for her to get raped, the third when she loses her virginity to chuck, the person that had assaulted her all those years ago, an interaction that at best has dubious consent (and at worst, which i think is the correct interpretation, is rape). coincidentally (or maybe not), in all three occurrences she is “saved” by men, dan (&serena), nate, dan and eric, respectively. [there are many great reads on the internet about jenny’s arc and her strive for control over her life after the first assault, but i won’t link them because there are too many, and some have controversial takes that i don’t agree with so]. now, this could be just the writers letting their misogyny show through, which would not surprise me because they do this on more than one account, it could also be really, jenny does not have very many women in her life. that’s not to say there are none, or that there are none that have had significant impacts on her life, i just think the men have been much more signifant in her life, since much of her arc and growth involves the males in her life, the women all being mere passersby (lily, who tries her best to be the mother jenny never had, her biological mother, who while she is close to, has made the active decision to not be in her children’s lives, serena, who also tries to be a sister to jenny, blair, who punishes jenny time and time again (it will be said, that blair has a lot of unaddressed internalised misogyny), agnes, who jenny genuinely believes to be her friend and betrays her more than once, vanessa as well, who jenny has seen as a friend and sister, betrays jenny by taking away the one thing she has been clinging onto, the one person that is safety and security to her - nate)
that’s to say, something they have in common is when they feel abandoned both will do anything to get things or people back. where they differ, i think, is dan will hurt the people that leave him, whether that is with his words or actions. jenny does the same on a few occasions, but mostly she lashes out at third parties or at herself when she feels hurt. note that a lot of the way they feel and the actions they take as a result is also influenced by their ages and levels of maturity, because even when jenny leaves, she is only the age that dan is at the start, so there’s quite a difference there.
i doubt it was deliberate because once again, the writers aren’t exactly the brightest, nor do they care enough about characters that aren’t chip whiskers to bother with the humphreys, but i like thinking too much about everything so
#nat rambles#gossip girl#this was long#dan humphrey#jenny humphrey#i want it to be said i am not excusing any actions they take#maybe some#just my take on why they made the decisions they did#tw:sexual assault#tw:rape#gg meta

Can I request headcanons for Bakugou, Shinsou and Deku where they like someone who can be very honest and blunt so sometimes their comments might come off as an accidental roast or maybe they didn't read the room and didn't sugarcoat something they said? It was never out of malice, but they don't have a filter if you know what I mean?
Their Blunt S/o
Pairings: Bakugo x reader, Izuku x reader, Shinso x reader
Warnings: a lil’ obscenities, one la ganja joke.
A/n: Sorry for the long wait. I myself is quite blunt but I didn’t want the reader to be completely mean 😭 I hope you like it!!
Taglist: @goatsenpaiultimate @sunset-novice-writer
💥 Really loves how you smoke everyone with your blunt ass (huehuehue marijuana joke)
💥 He’s usually on the same wavelength as you; you two are both crude, poison-laced tongue individuals.
💥 But you don’t mean any harm at times while Katsuki does.
💥 The first time you guys met was when he was talking about how he’ll destroy Midoriya during the first quirk test of the class.
💥 The scene was taking up all the time in the day and you were hungry. So you intervened. “Just get on with it. You’re wasting everyone’s time here Atomic Blonde.”
💥 I made that joke already just leave me alone
💥 He turned around, ready to light your ass on fire however Aizawa wrapped him up like a mummy before he could reach you.
💥 Really despised you for a while. Mans is upset because you don’t care about what comes out your mouth and you’re always pointing out some flaws in his technique or personality.
💥 But the miracle happens that he saw how your comments actually pushed him to perform better in both school work and training.
💥 Thus you are integrated in the Bakusquad! 🥳
💥 He loves your presence, eyeing you while you both help the rest in the frequent study sessions, Laughing when you comment on Denki’s lame pick up lines and Kirishima’s clumsy ass.
💥 When it’s his turn, he goes all dramatic with it to keep your attention on him. Once your eyes land on him, he intends to keep them there by any means necessary. The usual strategy is to tease and start a roast session that becomes a staple in your everyday lives.
💥 He really appreciates how you treat him differently than everyone else.
💥 So when everyone was pitying him after his kidnap and the battle of All Might vs AFO. He was so frustrated.
💥 The day he arrived to school, everyone was willing to do everything for him: hold his bag, get him lunch and other offers that made him seem helpless.
💥 So the day when everyone was in the lounge room and Kirishima offered to take his suitcase upstairs, you decided to say a few words.
💥 “Why are you doing that? He’s not a fucking baby. Stop treating him like a limping wolf.” You then turned to Bakugo. “And you, we get it. Your backbone is strong and you hate being helpless but sometimes you need fucking help both physically and mentally so be an actual man and actually fucking talk instead of blabbering all this unphased bullshit.”
💥 Dead silence dissipated all the nonsensical talk in the room before Bakugo stormed off, a shadow casted over his brow as his fingers creaked under its own force to remain fisted.
💥 As soon as he left, Tsuyu turned to you criticising your approach even though it was true. But the truth hurts and you believe everyone should deal with the pain 🤷🏽♀️ cmon bad bitch
💥 Arrived at your door after the whole brawl with Midoriya, jaw puffed and red coordinating with a nasty gash on his arm. You dragged him in, berating his choices on releasing his emotions like a neanderthal. Among the constant scolds, he silenced you with a simple sentence.
💥 “I’m sorry. You were right and I need to talk to someone.”
💥 The night consisted of him talking about his life, insecurities and fears while attempting to compose his emotions. With a little push, all the feelings he kept where released to the wild, for the better.
💥 Now he has a whole new meaning for liking you.
🥦 Little baby boy can hardly withstand your bluntness
🥦 Attempts to be your translator if someone takes your words wrong.
🥦 Your critiques aren’t the nicest so Midoriya fills that gap in.
🥦 He’s always as flabbergasted as the receiver of your comments. His verdant eyes widened grandly and as he inhales a sharp gasp. After the shock he turns to the person with apprehension, letting your intentions be known in a softer version than it was given.
🥦 “Tenya, don’t ever try to make breakfast again. The eggs were shit like how did you even burn the water?” Midoriya quickly jumped in, waving his hands erratically to ensure no harm. “S-she meant that your eggs were—ehm— had a little saltiness to them and also to try keep the fire to—uh m-medium?”
🥦 Scared that someone will beat your ass over something you said but that isn’t no problem because that mouth comes with a good pair of hands.
🥦 But he really admires your sharp tongue and frank mind. Unlike hisself, you plough through all nervous talks and thoughts, making your thoughts as clear as day.
🥦 But he’s not excluded from any harsh comments.
🥦 After figuring out why he almost missed the talent show, you laid it on thick.
🥦”Are you completely nuts? Couldn’t you wait on Rappa or I don’t know call someone from up here to get security? You really just love to throw yourself in trouble, don’t you?”
🥦 Ngl, it did sting a little but whatever Izuku believed he did right, he will forever be proud of it. Aside from that, he is hurt that you thought his actions were irrational.
🥦 Noticing his frown and glossy eyes, you quickly apologised, not intending to ridicule his actions.
🥦 “Izuku, I...I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you like that. I was just really worried and I care for you a lot.”
🥦 If he was close to crying from before he’s in tears now. His blush ignited his face as his mind mulled over your confession.
🥦 He accepted your apology and as his heart couldn’t take anymore blatant affection from a girl, you hugged him, hugged him.
🥦 And that’s how Midoriya fell even more hopelessly in love with you.
🎆 The tired baby boy
🎆 He is also blessed with the ability to be brash, although it is underhanded.
🎆 but he definitely noticed how brash you were when he confronted Class 1A before the sports festival.
🎆 The tension between Bakugo and the students outside palpable, the mixture of agitation and unease stifled the air everyone breathed until you trod to the door.
🎆 “Are you boys done with your little intimidation battle? Because I have an anime to binge watch and I’d rather not have it wait any longer.” You then turned to Shinso.
🎆 “By the way your hair is really cute.”
🎆 You left everyone gobsmacked as you passed through the crowd without fail, as if you didn’t even interrupt a brewing clash a second ago. But no one was as gobsmacked as Shinso who was blushing from the compliment.
🎆 Ever since, your bluntness has not wavered even after becoming friends with him through Kaminari and Sero.
🎆 You obviously showed you liked him. Your frank attitude included being downright honest in your attraction to him and others.
🎆 Exhaustion clouded his eyes heavily as he walked past your lunch table filled with Class 1A’s girls talking about their fears for the future. Mina’s almost drawn to tears about the upcoming math test as Uraraka consoled her worries.
🎆 Everyone was nervous, anxiety wore on their face and through the sounds of nail biting from Hagakure.
🎆 As soon as the mind control quirk wielder caught your eye, you couldn’t stop yourself from talking.
🎆 “Shinsou is so handsome. And he’s getting quite buff judging by how his shirt was constricting from before. Don’t you guys think?”
🎆 Your comment was loud enough to reach the by-passer, who blushed at the sudden compliment. His hand naturally travelled to the nape of his neck, soothing his own embarrassment as the table’s eyes, in particular yours, laid on him, waiting on his response.
🎆 “Why t-thank you, (Y/n)” He nodded in acknowledgment of your compliment and then walked briskly off to his own table.
🎆 Mina turned towards you as he was out of ear range. “Have you no shame?! I was crying about my grades before you suddenly wanted to say Shinso was hot.”
🎆 Everybody started saying how random and sudden you were before you shrugged your shoulders.
🎆 “A girl knows what she likes.”
🎆 Shinso eventually warms up to your sudden compliments and impartial bluntness
🎆 The two of you were eventually called a“pair of blunt knives” by Kaminari.
🎆 Doesn’t matter, it’s a cute couple name ☺️.

Just finished Cats 2019... it was mostly bad. But I could almost see what they were going for. Because there are concepts and ideas where ALMOST works, but there are things that keep messing it up for one reason or another.
For instance I'll list some things I liked that work as a movie.
I like the idea of Macavity going around and kidnapping cats who sang in order to make himself the next Jellical choice by default. It's different than the play but in a good way, and is actually a good idea for a movie where rescuing the cats is part of the end goal. His intro is also pretty good, with him jumping on the sign and turning it into his wanted photo. The shot of him there along with his line and how he says it are good build up to him being a credible threat. (Pity they don't deliver)
Two numbers that really work in the movie and stand alone are the Rum Tum Tugger's number, and Skimbleshanks. Skimbleshanks was the BeST song in the movie and honestly, I would love to see Jason Derulo get to play Tugger on stage some time. I think he would do a really good job in the roll if given the chance.
I like Demeter taking on a more protector roll. In the play she's more skittish, but the movie gives her quite the defensive personality, where she almost acts like defender of the tribe, instead of that roll given to Munkustrap. It's different, but it's good different.
I like the Mungojerry and Rumpleteezer song. It's a lot slower, and has a bit more of a villianous vibe, but it's a lot of fun to watch. And it sort of fits their new rolls in the movie.
And that's it... how unfortunate.
Sadly the story falls flat and because it's less about "Cats" and more about Victoria. They gave her the roll of main character, when they really shouldn't. Victoria is a lovely cat in the play and her white fur stands out in a sea of colours and patterns that all the other cats have, but making her an audience insurgent waa a bad call because in this movie, she actually lacks a consistent character.
Sometimes she's confused and doesn't know what's going on, and other times she's on the same wavelength as everyone else. She also gets a weird amount of attention from...everyone. which at times almost makes it seem like the world is revolving around her, rather than her being a part of the world. We never learn why she wants to help Grizabella so much, and at the beginning, she was being side eyed and almost rejected, but then in just a few signs "Munkustrap" is worried about her and Mistoffelees because they disappeared, when all the cats scattered at the same time as she did!
There were also scenes that did not work for the movie, like the "Naming of Cats." In the show, it works because it's a part of the world building as well as an introduction to a lot of the cats who will not be getting musical numbers about themselves, but are still valuable members. Such as Alonzo, Demeter, Bombalurina, and Munkustrap. These cats never get their own songs, so it's important to drop the names here. As well as get into the psyche/ beliefs of a Jellical Cat and what their names means to them. (Its also creepy and cool!)
But the movie makes this seem like it might introduce a character arc for Victoria. When Demeter says "Victoria? That can't be your only name..." implying that Victoria was just a name that humans who abandoned her gave her, and so it's a name that will drag her down. So while she is exploring the life of a Jellical over the night, it might lead to her discovering who she truly is, and as such, discover her true name.
But...none of that happens. They don't even introduce a VERY important character in that number. Munkustrap! Without this name drop, he becomes a nameless character! Which is a really weird choice since he's Victoria's sort of mentor figure, as well as a pseudo leader until Old Deuteronomy arrives. Unless you saw the play, I'm sure most people would just call him "that grey cat who sure was in a lot of scenes."
(How can you go through a whole musical and introduce a main character, AND FORGET TO NAME THEM!!!)
And there's just a lot of inconsistencies with the music and the character actions. Songs will say and action or describe a character, and the cats will wither be doing said action, making it redundant, or they'll look completely opposite of how they were described. (Cough cough, Macavity).
There's just a lot of problems with the music, and effects that causes problems for the dancing. There is obviously a lot of thought, effort and practice into the dance of this movie, and sometimes, it looks lovely.... for moments at a time. But something always comes along to ruin it. Whether a sequence be interrupted to make poorly timed, unfunny jokes, the music becoming distracting due to a bad performance or choice or choice, or most often, the CGI getting in the way!
The CGI is atrocious and I hate the cardboard cut out effect it has on almost everyone's face at one point or another. But what I hate more is the fact that all the CGI covers up the dancing! There's so much caked on to cover the people or to make them jump/ move awkwardly, that it stops being a spectacle like it should be and instead covers up all the hard work the dancers originally put into the project to begin with. I can not for the life of me not understand why they would do this! They could could have used costumes, than CGI'd in a tail or moving ears. But instead what we got was somewhere between awkward and horrific in a lot of places!
In the end, this movie was a mess! And I've already thought of a few ways to improve the movie that I'll share later. But yeah this was... not good.
Also too many of the cats were straight! Where the f*ck is bisexual legend The Rum Tum Tugger. Gay AF Mistoffelees, queer/ poly everyone! The only poly ship we got in the movie was Victoria/Rumpleteezer/ Mungojerry, and they demonized it by the twins leaving her to die via dog for no reason. And the we only got a bit of queer subtext between Munkustrap and Skimbleshanks, and a touch of Mistoffelees/ Munkustrap in the Mistoffelees...."Number."
Which by the way, how DARE they mess up the Mistoffelees number so much. Not only did they kill all momentum repeated by his CONSTANT failure, not ONLY did they remove his signature dancing, not ONLY did they remove the amazing vocals (which by the way, Rum Tum Tugger should be saranating!!! (But he did do a little but of extra leg work in the final attempt to bring back Old Deuteronomy. I heard you sing Jason. You're vocals were amazing. Way to sneak that In)) but the song no longer works plot wise! Due to it's length and how many failed attempts there were, Old Deuteronomy would have drowned in the ocean by the time Mistoffelees was done singing. Growltiger/ Macavity were immediately trying to murder her after they brought her to the ship. And it should not take that long to push an old, senile cat off the plank, when you already got her lined up and a stick ready. It was a poor decision that should have been avoided.
But yeah I'm done for now. I'll offer my thoughts on how to fix/ improve the movie later. Because this movie can be fixed, it just needs some serious leg work and script editing.

I came from a country where being gay is not illegal but still very badly seen so what Eric did to me came off as spoiled and privileged. Nigerian men risk their lives every time they try to live and he just comes on a holiday risk for nothing and get a high out of it like... I get he is a poc in uk so racism but he is still privileged in respect to Nigerian living there and it felt like when tourists do all they want and use foreign countries as a eat pray love playground for adrenaline and Deep Moments
thanks for having partially confirmed to me one thing i didn’t quite know how to articulate and again i don’t… right with the premise that ofc not being poc and/or lgbt myself so my opinion is worth what it’s worth i felt like not only it made eric come off as privileged and not quite realizing it - or if it was the target then it wasn’t well written nor did it come across well - the points that imvho are not well put in this entire narrative are the following
let’s say one target was ‘we want eric to reconnect with the nigerian part of his heritage and realize that being gay in the uk is a privileged position in comparison to being gay in nigeria’: there is a single moment where he feels unsafe on the car but then he goes into the bar and it was played as… like THRILLING WILL WE GET CAUGHT OR NOT but i didn’t perceive that he felt in danger or like he realized exactly what he was facing
the whole family reconnection part was like… his mom lied about her husband bc family peace and kind of forces him to not be out bc she fears for his safety so like now unless i remember wrong eric has been out/never felt like he didn’t have to be since the show started so it should have a) given him insight re how it feels to NOT being able to be out b) let his mom connect with him on having to lie abt your significant other part c) concluded with at least a hint he could come out to nigerian family and like… point b) was more or less explored, c) was hinted bc he talked to his grandma abt adam but a) felt ABSOLUTELY missing because he comes back and everything he seems to gather from it is I WANT TO GO TO BARS BECAUSE I CAN? and most of all……. going through a) should have made him more sympathetic to adam’s struggles and instead it seemed like he deduced ‘oh since in nigeria it’s illegal then it makes no sense he’s taking so much time’ like…? it’s… a pretty self centered take to get out of this entire experience and if it was a check your privilege storyline then good but… it didn’t feel like that was how they framed honestly and why talking abt adam to the grandma if he’s gonna dump him????
now the eat pray love thing you mentioned is… i mean i felt like it was along those lines but as stated couldn’t be sure re my take but again my issue is with how they went at it, bc you CAN do that narrative if you clearly frame it as ‘we like eric and he’s a swell guy but he’s not free from that kinda behavior in light of the fact that living in the uk gives him automatic privilege wrt being out so we’re going to explore how he deals with it and it might be badly but then he learns from it and checks his privilege’ like it’s smth that can happen and everyone in this show has been shitty wrt smth at some point which is good bc it means everyone is written realistically… i’m not sure the narrative said THAT but it didn’t look like even the writers knew bc it was all over the place?? and i mean… i get that this show has realistic teenagers which means they can behave like petty assholes but like it was rushed, badly explained, not overt re wtf they wanted to do with this storyline and it’s not clear if eric even cares at the end?? and thats ooc anyway bc the eric we saw until this point isn’t… that callous or dismissive? and it never seemed to me like they wanted to write him as positive char that progressively gets less sympayhetic so honestly this entire plotline looks stupid
like the thing is at the end of it: - has eric reconnected to his nigerian heritage/found a way to balance it with his uk background? doesn’t seem to me like he did - has eric concluded anything re telling the nigerian side of his family that he’s out? no - has eric gained some actual insight from his experience that’s not ‘I want to go to bars because I can and I have no patience for someone who needs to take it slower’? doesn’t seem to me like he did - has eric realized that adam not being ready to tell his own mom stuff was a sort of parallel situation to his own mother not being ready to tell her mom stuff and like... if eric’s own mom lied about her partner to her family for years and still wasn’t ready to do it then why is giving adam a bit more time to tell his own mom especially given his less than stellar background re accepting himself and coming out such a hardship? no and we just don’t know basically this entire plotline could have gone a bunch of different places that were interesting/could have caused strong conflict/interesting storytelling but it didn’t do any of these things and fell back on like... cheap drama for the sake of it and honestly idt it was very sensitive wrt anything included in it which honestly strikes me as odd bc if sex ed ever did one thing right was treating sensitive subjects well without dancing around it or making things sugarcoated and still letting the characters not be cardboards so I’m very very perplexed about it and I just hope they plan to reveal wtf they wanted it to be next year because honestly I don’t know what it wanted to be and if they didn’t make it clear it’s not good writing - which until now they had in spades, therefore....
like, there’s nothing... narratively wrong in ‘I want to show that character X who faces racism and homophobia in the UK would have privilege wrt being able to be out/live his sexuality without shame in the UK and not in the country his family comes from and he has no idea because he hasn’t entertained that thought and he might come off as unpleasant or incapable of immediately getting it while that happens’, but the thing is that in this specific narrative it’s not clear whether eric got it or if he didn’t bc teenagers are shallow and don’t get it (which..... I mean the teens in this show aren’t exactly shallow like that so that doesn’t really hold up) or if he’s having trouble processing it or if the trip shook his entire world (didn’t seem like it) so like... I should hope next season it’s addressed what they want this thing to be because honestly idk and I don’t particularly like the direction it took
this adding that anyway again the way they broke eric and adam off like that makes the whole S2 finale look sour and eric come off like an asshole also wrt rahim because I mean, one thing is ‘eric has been in love with adam/has liked adam best all along but adam wasn’t around and he liked rahim so he gave it a shot but rahim wasn’t it for him so when adam does the great love gesture for him in front of everyone he decides to leave rahim for him’ because like that sucked for rahim anyway but it also wouldn’t have been fair to him to not break it off if eric had stronger feelings for someone else (and that was clear from the get-go) and then when they get together eric puts effort in it and they go places, one thing is ‘all of that happens but then the moment they aren’t on the exact same page and/or eric realizes he doesn’t want to put the necessary effort into respecting the time adam needs to handle his things even when adam forgives him and says he’ll try to get on track with him’ and so the solution is nah let’s break up instead of putting some work into it when ngl adam has been doing 85% of that this season................. it makes him look like the moment there’s an obstacle to a relationship he’s in or his partner isn’t on the same wavelength he’d just rather break it off first instead of giving it a go and that’s not a really great look on him and as stated it makes the thing with rahim look really bad because again one thing is leaving someone you like for someone who feels like is the love of your life and another thing is leaving someone you like for someone who loves you that much but then you’ll leave them too because..... he needs time to talk to his mother and he’s not ready to be fully out when he comes from repressingyourfeelingsinternalizedhomobiphobia central? like........ dunno but it just feels sour and like nothing one would expect out of eric as he was written/developed until now so I’mma just wait to see what they do next season but it’s just not good writing all around
#1#2#3#4#5#sex education spoilers#sex education for ts#janie rants#i mean i have... issues also wrt jean's infidelity™ storyline#esp in light of the fact that it was anti terf season which i ABSOLUTELY appreciated a whole fucking lot#and wrt a lot of stuff happening for the sake of cheapass drama which could have been obtained differently#let's not talk about the aimee and steve thing issues#bc that also was a choice™#idk the fact that NO ONE literally NO ONE except ola and lily got nice things#AND honestly ola deserved a lot worse narratively bc she did lily way dirty#was... a choice#long post for ts#idk idk idk#there was a lot of good stuff this season but the implications at the last couple eps......... eeeeh

This is very specific but do you have any headcanons about double dates between Jeanbilee and Silvercyclops? That or how do you headcanon Charles and Erik’s sexualities? I think of Erik as pan and Charles as gay.
Hehe... Oh I can do this.
For Charles and Erik’s sexualities, I definitely agree. Charles is gay and Erik is either bi or pan (that one I’m not too solid on).
With the double date, catch me putting this in a modern setting. It’s under the line since there’s a lot
Individuals
Scott
Scott was definitely against the idea of a double date
Why? Because it’s kind of awkward to go out on a double date where the other couple... one of them is your ex
Yeah he’s still good friends with Jean! He’s just not sure how to handle going out to an event with her in a sort of romantic setting. Especially because there’s that slight problem that you KNOW he’s kinda anxious. Like what if people who knew him when he was dating Jean finds him all close and romantic with Peter?
Of course that’s not gonna happen. Man’s just anxious
But Peter managed to convince him and assure him that it would be alright
“It’s just a movie, Scotty. No one’s gonna care,” Peter had said. “Literally it’s dark and the seats are set up in pairs, you don’t need to worry.”
Scott protested immediately with, “but what if--”
“I’ll pay for the popcorn and treats. And the drinks. I’ll pay for it all for you.”
Scott caved pretty quickly
Except he didn’t know that before the movie the group was going out to dinner because for some reason his mind completely omitted that information. By the time they got together, he remembered, but oh man. He was not prepared
Yeah he was dressed up because Peter was really insistent on him wearing something decent, but the fact they were going out to dinner skipped his mind entirely
He was antsy during the dinner at first. Really shifty-eyed and such and was overall just visibly nervous
But he cooled down fast
He had a lot of fun at the dinner, even if he was a bit awkward with Jean at first
But he loosened up. He found himself enjoying the event much more as time went on and he even managed to calm down enough to comfortably interact with Jean just like he used to
It was actually kinda refreshing
He had whole conversations with the ginger. While Jubilee and Peter were going off about their crazy ideas and plans and things that have happened to them over the past weeks, Scott and Jean were just talking about... life. Catching up on what they’ve missed since they split apart and inevitably pulled away from each other (Scott moreso than Jean)
It brought a sense of closure to Scott that he didn’t realize he needed
He found himself warming back up to interacting with Jean and was... happy with it
Peter
Oh Peter was excited for the double date
Ever since Jubilee ran up to him and proposed it to him he was completely on board. Hell, he even helped plan it out with Jean and Jubilee at times
It was actually Jean’s idea for Peter to convince Scott that things would be alright. She knew he was worried about it, even if it was all irrational. She also knew that he was their best bet on helping Scott out and getting him comfortable with the idea
So Peter did just that
He actually did a lot more than just blatantly tell Scott that he was going to pay for everything at the movies
Peter did a lot of minimal prodding. Stuff to get Scott to talk in a way that wasn’t too intrusive or anything (it’s honestly a special ability of Peter’s). It helped him understand what he was gonna have to do to help his boyfriend out
Because Scott had never been on a double date before
And Peter actually found that kinda funny
But when it came to the date itself, he was completely down for it. He wanted to do it since the moment Jubilee told him about it and he decided he was going to put about as much planning effort into it as her. After all, it’s not different from other... events they’ve planned in the past. They have a perfect system
The movie was his idea
He deemed it “necessary after eating at some dumb fancy place. Because who in their right mind is gonna go out to eat and then just head home at like, 7pm?”
(Peter was also the reason they didn’t end up going to a restaurant where you had to dress up SUPER fancy)
(Granted he wasn’t entirely successful. Jean shot him down and made him settle with having to dress up a little. She wasn’t going to drive them all to dinner if it was gonna be some fast food shit)
Honestly, him and Jubilee are on the exact same wavelength for the date
Jean
Jean was definitely the TRUE brains behind the double date
She was the one who mentioned the idea to Jubilee who then took the idea and ran with it, making it a true plan
She did it because, well, she’s always wanted to have a double date. It was only possible now that she was with Jubilee and her other friends were together
Besides, she like anyone else was aware of just how close Jubilee and Peter were. It was honestly a perfect plan
Scratch something off her bucket list while also getting the two away from their peers so everyone could actually catch a break from their high energy
Actual perfection right there
That and she could tell Scott was awkward around her, even if they’ve been broken up for almost an entire year by this point
There were a lot of times Jean tried to reconnect with him and get him to loosen up but nothing really worked until she came up with the double date
It would give her the opportunity to get her friend back while also allowing him to be in a sort of comfortable environment (she’s noticed the way he tends to cling to Peter whenever she comes around. She isn’t sure if she should be hurt by it or not but she knows he doesn’t mean ill will)
She has to admit though, Peter’s idea of a movie after was a great idea. It’s not something she would’ve put forward or even thought about
Then again... she wasn’t expecting the duo to take over the planning and make it a lot more “light” than an actual “true” date
Jean was looking to reserve them stuff out at a true fancy restaurant. Maybe get them to all dress up and put them in a romantic setting but she was quickly put in her place by Jubilee and Peter’s insistence that it’s a double date, they don’t need to be in a super romantic area
And honestly, they had a point
But she refused to let them make the event completely casual. If she was going to be involved in any planning, they were gonna go somewhere where they have to dress up at least a little
She won that argument easily
Jubilee
OH MAN
Okay yeah Jubilee was definitely the front runner with the planning and setting everything up
Even with the double date originally being Jean’s idea, Jubilee took it upon herself to plan it all out mostly because she wanted to treat her girlfriend
(You act as thought Jubilee doesn’t know her own partner’s bucket list. Jean literally has it written out in a notebook under her pillow, Jubilee has gone through it multiple times)
She wanted it to be perfect
Which is why she went to Peter
Jean was the one who planted the idea of going on the double date with Scott and Peter but let’s be real, Jubilee would’ve chosen the boys anyways. They were the best bet
Either way, she was ecstatic
She literally has so much experience with planning from the pranks and events she’s set up with Peter, she knew exactly what she was doing when she got with him to plan everything out
Jubilee was actually the one who chose where they were going to dinner
It was a nice Hawaiian themed place. A seafood restaurant with a tropical theme and generally considered a 4 or 5 star restaurant. It was a perfect place, especially with its looser “dress code” (it was basically a sort of business casual, for lack of better terms. If she tried to describe it she would just point to Scott wearing a nice button up with no tie and Jean wearing a cute blouse and flowy pants to match)
(The really funny part is her and Jean low-key made it out to Peter like super fancy restaurants require you to wear formal clothes just so he would cave and “go somewhere less strict”)
(He never found out)
But if she was going to be honest, her favorite part of the double date was the movie afterwards
It was the newest Men in Black and she was losing her mind throughout it
Did she tune out the boys while they were nerding out quietly to her right? Yes, yes she did. She was much more focused on the humor and action and experiencing it with her girlfriend
Overall
Not gonna lie, Scott definitely clung to Peter at first
Like that much is obvious, but it really wasn’t that... obvious? It was if you looked closely at how he hovered closer to the older boy or how his head always seemed to be turned slightly towards him during conversations as if looking to him for stuff to say
Peter noticed it for sure, just as Jean did
Both of them let it happen. Because even when Scott loosened up as the night went on, he still wanted to stick close to his comfort and they didn’t want to pull him away from that
Man just doesn’t handle break ups well
Honestly though, the dinner was wonderful for the entire group. There was so much laughter and chatting and catching up, especially since they aren’t consistently hanging out together anymore
Jubilee convinced Scott to try some really spicy squid dish that he couldn’t remember the name of for the life of him and Peter just... kept ordering more chocolate milk
(They quickly learned that he forgot refills aren’t free)
(That didn’t stop him)
Outfits
Scott: Nice blue button up and black slacks. Honestly really basic typical “oh that guy looks cishet” kinda look, especially with the very plain uniform look to him
Peter: Black button up with white specks across it that look like stars and some slacks as well except his belt was a bit more... decorative than Scott’s. (It’s colorful)
Jean: A cute, loose blouse with a nice white and red floral/watercolor sort of pattern that sits nicely on her frame with some flowy pants and flats. Her hair was done into a braid
Jubilee: A nice long sleeve sweater-like yellow top and a short white skirt with a pair of flats as well. She had her hair down and man was it nice and curly
Honestly everyone was dressed so nicely, it was almost a miracle
During the movie, the couples sat together. That’s a given. But the way they interacted was definitely different from each other
Jean and Jubilee were vibing in their seats. They had chocolate and slushies and popcorn and were overall having a great time just enjoying the movie. There wasn’t too much commentary other than them laughing together or making fun of something they saw on screen
(Jean one time did yell at someone for having their phone on in the movie...she’s that person)
Jubilee was constantly touchy with Jean whenever something crazy happened or there was something intense. Hell, she ended up wrapping around Jean and crying when her favorite character died
Jean took it and honestly... it made her soft
She didn’t know it was possible to fall even further in love
Peter and Scott, though, were different. They too had all the treats and candy and such like the other couple but they were much closer than the girls. They were BASICALLY cuddling (Scott will never admit it). Like come on, you know it’s true
Scott was curled up against his boyfriend. Like head resting against Peter as the older had his arm around him. You know the drill
Again, Scott will never admit to it
But the entire time they were geeking out. Both of them grew up with sci-fi, especially MiB. And BOTH were excited for the newest movie and were having a great time pointing out the aliens and all that stuff and just overall having fun
After the date, the drive was both full of energy and calm. It was 10 by the time they were leaving the theatre and honestly... it’s an experience none of them would give up for the world
...they planned another one for the future

It’s the first day of 2021, which calls (yet again!) for my ten favorite new-to-me movies I watched in 2020!
The rules are the same as always: no movies from this past year (2020) or the year before (2019). Every other year is free game.
All ten of these movies are fascinating and beautiful and well worth your time, so consider this a strong endorsement for all of them. I’ve also included ways to watch all of the films (as of this writing, Jan. 1, 2021).
01. Two for the Road (dir. Stanley Donen, 1967; USA) Donen takes the ideas of romantic cinema and celebrates it while injecting a healthy dose of painful reality. He chooses two of the English language's most attractive movie stars, Albert Finney (in full himbo mode!) and Audrey Hepburn, and follows their ten-year marriage as seen on their various road trips across Europe. It's a memory piece more than anything else, but the arc of their relationship is clear and their palpable connection burns through the screen. These are two beautiful, intelligent adults who love each other deeply, who are still physically attracted to each other, who are able to hurl verbal jabs and insults at each other with the best of them. Finney is magnificent, but Hepburn sort of steals the show. In what is probably her finest onscreen performance, she gets to grow from a virginal bride to a fully fleshed out adult, living beautifully in different shades of sexy and goofy and bitter. They make a screen couple for the ages. The script is funny without losing its honesty, it's tragic without leaning too far into artifice, it's romantic without being treacly. It's a remarkable balancing act and makes for a masterpiece. (Two for the Road is available to rent online or viewed at this link.)
02. Stop Making Sense (dir. Jonathan Demme, 1984; USA) Stop Making Sense feels like a miracle. It hints at a narrative arc, but that part is unimportant. It’s a live performance recorded and packaged specifically for consumption as a film. In its brief runtime, it becomes a living, breathing, sweating testament to David Byrne’s skill as a performer, as a songwriter, as a storyteller, and to the remarkable talents of everyone in Talking Heads. It’s a breathtakingly joyous experience. I can’t remember the last time I watched a recording of a live performance that captured the same brand of energy, of buoyancy, that you feel as you’re leaving a great communal experience. This is a masterpiece that proclaims as loudly as possible that there is no joy greater than making art with people you love. (Stop Making Sense is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.)
03. Scattered Clouds (dir. Mikio Naruse, 1967; Japan) Filled to the brim with unspoken turmoil and emotional devastation, Naruse's final film chronicles the rough terrain of a relationship between a widow and the man responsible for her husband's death. Spanning years and exploring just how deeply these wounds can go, much of the Scattered Cloud’s success rests on the performances from Yuzo Kayama and Yoko Tsukasa. Kayama is a handsome, likable screen presence who beautifully lives in his own cloud of grief. Tsukasa gets a bit more to chew on, as this really is her story: her arc and her inability to move forward, despite the best intentions, is one of the film's most lasting ideas. Brutally sad but incredibly beautiful. The work of a master filmmaker. (Scattered Clouds is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.)
04. L’Atalante (dir. Jean Vigo, 1934; France) My only regret with L’Atalante is that I didn’t see it sooner. The final (and only feature-length) film from Jean Vigo before his untimely death at 29, this film is a technical marvel and a humanist miracle. Featuring spirited performances from Dita Parlo, Jean Dasté, and the great character actor Michel Simon, and intoxicating dreamlike imagery, as well as a relentlessly romantic score from Maurice Jaubert, this film looks and feels like no other film from its era. (L’Atalante is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.)
05. Daisies (dir. Věra Chytilová, 1966; Czechoslovakia) Věra Chytilová's iconic masterpiece of anarchic cinema more than lives up to its reputation. Operating on its own chaotic wavelength, Daisies follows the exploits of Marie I (Jitka Cerhová) and Marie II (Ivana Karbanová) who seek to spoil themselves after realizing how spoiled the world is. They begin to live extravagantly and rip off older men and cause general mischief. Over less than 80 minutes, Daisies upends a whole slew of cultural norms. Beautiful, ambiguous, funny, cynical, and truly visionary. (Daisies is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel and HBO Max.)
06. The Hero (dir. Satyajit Ray, 1966; India) The Hero sort of feels like Satyajit Ray's answer to 8½ in its meditation of fame and regret. Uttam Kumar is fantastic as Arindam Mukherjee, a superstar actor who works through his career and his loss of values in an interview with a reporter played by Sharmila Tagore, who is also fantastic. Under Ray's sleek direction, gracefully opening up the world of the train, and with his intelligent and human script, the cast uniformly sinks their teeth into this film. Kumar is the MVP out of necessity -- without him, the whole film would fall apart -- but the whole ensemble is remarkable, peppering the background of the train scenes and in Arindam's flashbacks. This also has one of the all-time great nightmare sequences. Easily one of the master director’s best films. (The Hero is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.)
07. Malcolm X (dir. Spike Lee, 1992; USA) Malcolm X is a truly massive film housing an even bigger performance from the great Denzel Washington. Tracing Malcolm X’s life and career while juggling numerous tones and visual styles and spanning across decades and continents, this is surely Spike Lee’s most ambitious film up to this point in his career. Washington is onscreen for virtually all of its long runtime, from the early exuberant days before his imprisonment all the way up to that fateful day in the Audubon Ballroom, and he is, of course, tremendous. All that classic Denzel charisma and magnetism is on full display, whether in his impassioned speeches or in his more intimate scenes. Lee’s direction is top notch, making this full story about a life with an incalculably profound impact feel richly and deeply intimate. This is one of the essential American epics. (Malcolm X is available to rent online.)
08. Beau Travail (dir. Claire Denis, 1999; France) Beau Travail’s place in the modern canon of world cinema is assured, and Denis is rightfully seen as a master, but it really can’t be overstated just how much of a gem this film is. Pepper with sparse dialogue (though always packed with meaning), the film lives in one of two modes: muscular, suntanned men doing slow, precise choreographed exercises in the heat of the day and those same muscular men dancing and gyrating with attractive young women in some ethereal nightclub. Between these poles lies Denis’ almost cosmic meditation on masculine ego, homoerotic obsession, and regret. A fascinating, enigmatic, devastating beauty. (Beau Travail is currently streaming on the Criterion Channel.)
09. Only Angels Have Wings (dir. Howard Hawks, 1939; USA) Only Angels Have Wings might be Howard Hawks' crowning directorial achievement. The aerial work, the rainy nights, the beautiful atmosphere of the bars, the palpable camaraderie of the characters, the tragic loss of life and yet the persistence to move forward. Cary Grant leads a terrific cast, including a quietly moving Richard Barthelmess and a rarely-more-likable Thomas Mitchell, and his chemistry with both Jean Arthur (the most charming) and Rita Hayworth is a joy to watch. This film seems to dabble in multiple genres at once, subverting the cliches of the Hollywood formula while still embracing the melodrama and the artifice within. In that way, the film feels very strange, but if the viewer lets themselves be carried along with Hawks' unique rhythm, the reward is one of the most fascinating and exciting films in Hollywood's fabled 1939 output. (Only Angels Have Wings is available to rent online or viewed at this link.)
10. Closely Watched Trains (dir. Jiří Menzel, 1966; Czechoslovakia) Between the precise composition of the shots and the young narrator-protagonist, Closely Watched Trains feels like a spiritual predecessor to Wes Anderson's work. This comparison extends to the thematic content of the film as well, as the story of a young man coming-of-age against the backdrop of the Nazi regime is definitely cut from the same cloth as The Grand Budapest Hotel. Lucky for me, I love Anderson's work, and Grand Budapest is my favorite of his, so Menzel's stylistic flourishes immediately endeared me to the film.Menzel maintains a skillful tonal balancing act throughout Closely Watched Trains. Even under the wry, almost self-deprecating humor, the film never loses track of preciousness of life and the horrific tragedy of war. Beautiful cinematography, strong performances across the board, a memorable score, and a clever script make this a gem of the Czech New Wave and a moving, delightful, and accessible coming-of-age tale. Skin Deep Part 1
Skin Deep Part 2 Skin Deep Part 3
Pairing; Loki x Reader, Steve x Reader, Bucky, Natasha, Nick Fury, Thor and Valkyrie round out of cast! Summary: Picking up where Part 3 ended: You’re on the run with Loki, who wants answers. Steve comes clean to an old friend, Natasha and Fury make a plan. Warnings: References to violence, smut, intergalactic travel, and some kissing!
From his vantage point at Steve’s grill Bucky noticed the almost frantic vibration coming off his oldest friend from all the way across the lawn. And Steve wasn't carrying any champagne. In fact, he was whispering furiously to Natasha, shaking his head.
Looking to the skies, Bucky smelled the electricity in the air. It made the hairs on his human arm rise, antenna to trouble, tuning into the wrecked wavelength his friend was putting out. It was about you, of that Bucky was certain, and with your own strange behavior tonight, he knew trouble was en route. He had let you sneak away, sensing your breaking point, knowing your need for a minute alone. It was the reason you were such great drinking buddies. You let Bucky be himself and he returned the favor. Besides, something in Steve was different these days, something Bucky didn't exactly like. His friend, Captain America, hero to the weak, was pushy. Aggressive. Angry.
And when Steve looked at you, there was a gleam, a spark of possessiveness that gave Bucky pause. Sure, you were amazing. Funny, smart, undeniably sexy in a way all your own. Bucky understood wanting you, he even got the need to have you, hold you, lock you down with a ring. If only Steve could see how unhappy you were. Each time Bucky saw you, the strain had pulled more of your joy away. Sure, you baked pies, smiling the whole way, chirping platitudes and teasing Steve. That happiness, though, it never reached your eyes. Telling Steve that an engagement ring was too much, too soon, Bucky had tried in his very stoic way to prove that you weren't ready. Never fully able to give his buddy his blessing, Bucky had opted instead to provide you a shoulder to lean on. And lean you did. Slugging back vodka shots at all these parties, in the quiet and seldom used spaces of kitchens and dining rooms, you had talked easily with Bucky. No topic was too wild or off limits, with the exception of Steve. Anytime the name of your new love came up, the subject would change. You'd deflect and Bucky let you. Maybe he should have pushed harder, he thought as Steve stomped his way. Maybe Bucky should have forced you to talk about whatever issues you and Steve faced, tried his hand at advice, or offered excuses for his best friend’s erratic behavior. If Bucky had done that, then perhaps the stifling stench of trouble wouldn't be pooling around the party, pulsing through all the high energy people gathered together. “Buck… come here, would ya?” Sure, Steve sounded like himself. Jovial, a little concerned in that serious way he had, but not mad. For some reason, it reminded Bucky of the way Steve’s father would talk, just before he’d beat the ever loving hell out of Sarah… or Steve. It soured the stomach of battle tested Sergeant Barnes. War was coming. “Sure thing, punk.” Cocking his head, Steve couldn’t quite look his friend in the face, opting instead to focus on the open back door of his farm house. Would you come strutting out of it, unaware and un-phased? Steve prayed for that, even if his gut told him otherwise, “Bucky, you said my girl was in the ladies’ room?” Tucking his hands in his pockets, nodding solemnly, “Yea, Stevie. Yea. She had to piss. It happens.” Waiting for the battle was exhausting and Bucky just didn’t have the patience to stew in the slow burn of Steve’s anger. Clapping a broad hand along the neck of the Winter Soldier, Steve pulled his friend close. To anyone looking, the embrace would seem brotherly, kind. What they couldn’t see was the tight grip used to keep Bucky contained, or hear Steve’s heated harsh whisper, “Where the fuck is she, Buck? I know you know. So tell me.” Reacting instinctively, pulling against the restraining hook of Steve’s palm, “I don’t know what you’re talking about… she went to the bathroom, I came out here.” “Well she’s gone now and so is Loki-” Stepping back out of Steve’s reach, “Wait. Loki was here? I thought you said he left. Opened the Bi-Frost or whatever. Disappeared.” Almost growling, Steve ran desperate hands through his blonde hair, ignoring Bucky and turning to Natasha, “We need to let Fury know. Set a perimeter. Loki won’t be able to get off the planet, not without help anyway.” “Fury’s involved? Steve, what is going on?” Jabbing a finger into the chest of his best friend, Steve spun, spitting, “You let Loki kidnap my fiance, that’s what’s going on! And now I have to find her and rescue her before that greasy alien asshole does something else to the woman I love!” Rearing back, Bucky inhaled, lifting his shoulders. If you have to fight a friend, fight fair, he thought. Already Bucky could read violence in Steve’s muscle movement. The graceful way Steve bounced on his toes to build momentum into his fierce throw was minute but effective. Dropping his right arm, just a touch before stepping into his swing, Steve's eyes screamed murder and they were locked onto James Buchanan Barnes. A swish of air brushed at Buck's dark hair as the blow missed. Bucky easily blocked the punch, grabbing his pal at the wrist and twisting until his chest was pressed into Steve’s back. It was as fluid as the ballet you had forced them to attend a few months back, quick and clean movements, executed flawlessly. Bucky felt Steve spin in his grasp, planting his feet, preparing to toss the Winter Soldier on his ass. His counter maneuver was a leg sweep, one Bucky was ready to use, when Steve went limp in his grip. Natasha had sucker punched her mission partner in order to get his attention, “Steve. You gotta relax. Bucky didn’t know and you’re drawing attention. Too many eyes around here, ya know?” Natasha waved to Tony, a gesture that said, no worries, everything is ok over here. It was enough to satisfy the playboy, who turned back to his cocktail and conversation with Rhodes. “I'm fine. It's fine. I’m just…” unable to find the right word, spiraling, Steve sagged towards the ground. Catching him at the waist Bucky steadied his woozy friend as Natasha brushed off help from the other guests. Returning to the pair of soldiers out of time, The Black Widow, barely containing her disgust, “Bucky, get him inside. Steve, I'm sending everyone home, then I’m going to make a call.” True to her word, Natasha whispered something to Tony and Pepper, Bucky clocking their reaction of concern for both you and Steve. It was very clear to the Sergeant that The Avengers were not in on this mission. None of them were permitted to hang around the farm house with Nat going so far as to walk out with Clint and Rhodes. Bustling Steve into the kitchen, Bucky kicked a chair free from the table, dropping his buddy on his ass. Still a little amped up from the almost altercation outside, Bucky decided to put a bit of distance between him and his childhood friend, resting his hip against the counter, "What the hell was that, Steve?" "Stay out of it, Bucky." "It's too late for that, punk. Either you start talking or we take this back outside." Side eyeing the super soldier with a metal arm, Steve tugged at the corner of a pretty place mat sullenly, "Fuck you." "Language!" "You think I give a shit about bad words? Now? No… things are too far gone." Waving his hand, begging for more, "Care to elaborate, Cap?" Steve had a second to consider his options. He could let Bucky in, tell him what was going on, hear his opinions on the situation at hand. Or… not. "You don't need to be involved. Once Nat gets back, it's best if you go." Thunking into the opposite seat, Bucky leveled his grey gaze on his pal, "And if I say no?" "Look, it's an off the record thing. Tony, the rest of them? They know nothing. I don’t need you sticking your nose in-" That was all it took for the dam of Bucky’s own outrage to burst. With a wood rattling slap to the custom built dining table, open palm connecting enough to make Steve jump, "Damn it, Rogers! My nose is in this already. Hell, you were ready to half kill me over this… over her, not fifteen minutes ago!" Sighing, hard and heavy, Captain America pressed back in the wooden chair. He saw the questions in Bucky's look, the need to unravel this mystery, the desire to find a way out for his friends. And Steve realized that to accept his buddy's help, Bucky would need the full story. The truth hurts and Buck's words stung Steve. Bucky was right and in the end, he reasoned, they might need him to help bring down Loki. After a second of consideration, a rough hand sliding through his blonde locks, "Fine. FUCK! Fine. What do you know?" Crossing his arms over his chest, stern voiced but curious, Bucky started, "Just you and Nat reporting to Fury? Small team." "Small mission. At least, at first." Trying not to give anything away, making Bucky work for it felt good, almost like a return to his life before Loki, before you. Tapping his metallic finger on the table, Bucky resumed his questions, "So, how does Loki figure into this?" Leaning forward, Steve lowered his voice, “Weapons tech. Power. More than when he attacked New York. He’s been off world gaining followers, an army, and a throne.” “So the plan was to keep Loki away, right?” Nodding, Steve’s inflection solemn, “By any means necessary.” Rocking his head back, as if slapped, Bucky’s eyes widened. Just the implication of those words, by any means necessary, used by Nick Fury meant that this mission was crossing a line from mundane into murderous. "And she was your way in." It started to take shape, the whole sorted plan, Natasha’s involvement and Steve’s role in it all. Bucky felt that prickly sensation again. Bowing his golden head, Steve shook it yes, "Only… I wasn't brought in… I… volunteered." "Ok, but why?" Inching closer to the truth, waiting out the Captain, Bucky nodded for him to continue. When Steve wasn't forthcoming, Bucky nudged his foot with a sharp kick, eager to accelerate the story. For a second that frantic, frenzied energy flashed through the room again, pulling on Bucky's sixth sense, "Because I wanted what Loki had… who Loki had. I wanted her, so bad Bucky. So bad." “Steve… come on, man. There are other girls out there-” Cutting his friend off with a shout, “Why should that asshole have her? He doesn’t deserve her. Before he left, she was always so sweet, so cute… then he… abandoned her! Left her! Man, that was… just so hard to see.” “Yea… I know. I mean, I remember when she and Loki were together. And I know his leaving was hard on her.” “Hard on her? She… she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. God, I could hear her crying all night. Know how hard it was to keep away? To know that Loki had forgotten her?” Steve kept talking, about you, about loving you, and the lengths he went to in an effort to court you. He followed up with all the ways you denied him, over and over, until Natasha intervened. That all of it played into Fury’s plan was a convenient cross-point, coincidence, until things had gone wrong this afternoon. Bucky let him tell his story, knowing full well it was merely a version, a fairy tale wrapped around the rotten apple of truth. In Steve’s world he was the hero, wronged by fate, Fury and Loki Odinson. His path had been paved with good intentions and pure hearted motives. It was everyone else who misunderstood, miscalculated and mistook his actions. Could Steve be blamed for that? Of course, this edition of Steve’s tale didn't include beating up a cuffed prisoner. It also omitted the fact that Steve had been pursuing you while actively lying about Loki's whereabouts. Glossing over the details allowed Steve to paint a picture highlighting the best of him, but Bucky had known the little punk a long time. During a long pause that found Steve with his head in his hands, Bucky took a deep breath and asked, “And how did you and Fury know what Loki was up to?” “He was sending mission reports weekly. Loki had been tasked with helping promote peace across the Nine Realms. That he gained so much was the tipping point. Fury felt like a return to Earth would be 2012 all over again, only this time… total annihilation.” Something was still nagging at Bucky, “Had Loki made any threats?” A guilty look passed over the face of Captain America and his normally solid voice wavered, “Not that I was told about.” “So, Fury...?” “Fury needed… no, that’s not right. He wanted to keep close tabs on Loki, monitor his return, his mood, his movements, if he ever came back.” “And since she was his lover, she was a potential point of contact… the entry point?” “A possible one.” “If you were dating her and Nat was posing as her friend, then you’d know if Loki reached out, spilling the details on his plans, and be able to head him off at the pass.” “Exactly!” Oddly proud, Steve was almost happy that he no longer carried the burden by himself. Sure, Natasha knew, had even engineered some of it, but having a friend on his side made Steve feel better. “But Loki didn’t do that? He surprised you today?” Blowing out a frustrated snort, “Natasha went to meet him at the base. Apparently, the high and mighty Prince expected to be greeted by Fury and his forgotten lover.” “That didn’t sit well with the God of Mischief?” “Nope. Somehow he froze Nat. Confined her, I don’t know… Anyway, he came here and…” Trailing off, Steve could still picture his lady’s body, your body bent under his own, your eyes pressed shut in ecstasy. How you ground against what looked like his own sculpted skin, moaning through an orgasm that appeared amazing, and left you with shaky legs. Going silent, Bucky didn’t push, not this time, but he did feel the moment Steve surrendered fully. His shoulders let go with a deep inhale, his voice sounding like that scrawny kid from Brooklyn after a bad scrape, "She loves him, man. And I fucked up. Loki’s got my girl and I don't have any way to find her or fight him." Tears? Sighs? This wasn't Steve. No, Captain America was an unstoppable, unflappable hero. Spinning out was Bucky's move, not Steve’s. Putting his fleshy hand on Steve’s shoulder, trying to console the broken man in front of him, "Come on, kid. There's always a way to win. It's what you and I have been doing for over a century." “Not this time, man.” "Why not? Did you come clean? That’s why she left, isn’t it? You told her what was going on and she went after Loki." Shame filled Steve’s heart, his cheeks burning, "I… I didn’t get the chance. She left here, but not alone." "She'll be back." Words, pathetic platitudes, were all Bucky could offer. He had seen you tonight, skittish and jumpy. He saw Steve’s reaction to your disappearance, angry and hurt. Bucky thought that a snowball in hell stood a better chance than you're returning. "Not happening. I lost it on her, Buck. Smashed up mom's dresser, yelled… It was like being outside myself, watching myself do and say these terrible things. And it wasn't her fault. Not really. I mean, yea, she fucked him but he was me, so-" "Whoa. Stop. Say that again?" Steeling himself to relieve this afternoon’s nightmare again, Steve swallowed hard, "Loki, you know how he can… shape shift? Well, he came here as me and I walked in on myself screwing my girl!" Bucky's eyebrows lifted, his full lips curling into a cockeyed grin, "Wait. You're telling me that you came home and saw yourself banging your future fiancé?" Pausing, catching Bucky barely holding back a smirk, "Yea… why?" And for some reason, after all the incredible things Steve had shared tonight, it was the idea of Steve catching himself balls deep in your naughty bits that made Bucky laugh. Once he started, Bucky couldn't control the mad giggles from overtaking him, much to Steve’s astonishment. But then Steve laughed, too, "I guess it is pretty funny, when you think about it." "I mean, your face must have been priceless!" Clutching his stomach as the laughter grew stronger, Bucky had tears running down his cheeks at the image Steve described. Sure, it was a horrible thing, but who could say that they watched themselves having sex like that without being in porno? It took them both a minute to calm down, with Steve settling enough to counter, "Shit, Buck! I was pissed! I probably looked crazy." "That I do believe. What did you say to her? Them?" Now his face flushed scarlet, burning with embarrassment. The lie was just easier to get out, "Um… I don't really remember. I know I surprised Loki and well, my girl fainted from being used by him. The shock of it not being me, ya know?" Bucky didn't buy it, but he let his friend sell the story anyway, "Must have been scary for her. And that's when you secured Loki in the locked shed? And set Nat as your watchdog?" "Yup." Unable to meet his friend’s stormy stare, knowing that it would undo him completely, Steve focused on the edge of the table, running his fingers back and forth along the rough wood. If this were an interrogation and Bucky were sitting across from a suspect and not his best friend, he’d have no problem beating the guilty man into submission. But Steve was his strongest connection to this world, this time, and it was hard to walk away from family, even if they didn’t deserve the benefit of your doubt. To that end, one thing still bothered Bucky, "Why not cancel the party, man?" "Because I still want to marry her." Pulling the small black box from his front pocket, Steve toyed with the thing, his vision of a future with you still so close to realized. Whistling at the size of the sparkly rock enshrined in white gold, "Fancy. What do you think your chances are? Think she'll say yes?" "My chances went down to zero the second Loki dropped down to Earth. As for her answer… Dunno. I… I hope so, but now…", Steve faded off, knowing there was little hope for your romantic reunion if he didn’t have a clear idea of where you were at the moment. "Now Loki’s back." "Right." “And they’re gone, together.” “Right.” “And Fury’s on his way.” Striding in on impossibly high heels, Natasha folded her arms over her chest, eyeing the two gossiping men in front of her. It was going to be a long night. --- Somehow you had made it to the treeline undetected, using the orchard as a shield, ducking behind trunks as you and Loki scrambled toward the edge of the property. You couldn't help looking over your shoulder, checking for pursuit, worrying that Steve or Natasha were going to find the pair of you. There was no possible way they would let you get away, not after today, not with Loki. It was a bit treacherous, though. There was only natural light to guide you through twisted branches and raised roots, so your progress was slower than you wanted, but Loki was with you. Even beaten and bruised, he radiated calm, a soothing balm for your frayed nerves. Something about that made this whole situation seem better, manageable. You were no longer alone, Loki was here, holding your hand, not directing you but consulting. "Pet… the roadway is up ahead. Stay here, tucked out of sight." Pulling your long lost lover close, a small kiss passed between you, a passionate promise to sit still. Stepping tentatively out onto the gravel filled shoulder, Loki surveyed the highway quickly. When he was satisfied that the coast was clear, Loki waved at you, motioning you forward. Striding confidently at your side, Loki stopped in the dead center of the yellow lines, his grounding arm around your waist. A car, low, black, expensive, came racing round the bend, barreling towards you. Tucking your chin to Loki's chest, you gripped him tight, readying for the car's impact. A roar of wind swirled around you, grabbing at your skirt, whipping around your legs. For a second you thought you'd been struck. Breathless, your lungs emptied. There was nothing solid under you, just the feeling of Loki and a current of warm air. Next, you felt the impact of hard earth under your feet, vibrating through your shins, then Loki's grip loosening a touch, "Ok, darling?" Peeking from under his arm you saw lights everywhere. A bar was to your left, filled with noisy drinkers, barely discernible from the traffic around you. Honking horns made you jump, "Where the hell are we?" "Cleveland. I can't yet take us off world. I'm still a bit weak, I'm afraid… but at least we have a bit of a head start on Rogers and Fury." People pushed past you on their way to dinner, chirping happily, not seeing you in their tunnel vision. Being anonymous was a nice change, welcome even, as your personal life had been lost to Steve's intergalactic presence. On the busy streets of Ohio no one took notice of the two well dressed people standing on the damp sidewalk. "Um, you changed?", no longer sporting his battle gear, Loki was dapper in a black suit with an ebony tie. Leaning closer you straightened it, not because it was crooked, but because you needed to feel it… him. The whole look was just shy of too much, but that was the space Loki filled best and honestly, looking at him made your heart swell. Loki was back, and yours. After more than two years, having him close again felt natural, easy. In so many ways, the opposite of your life with Steve. As if somehow sensing your tug into nostalgia, Loki knuckled your chin up, "Just keeping up with you, love." His nose brushed against your own, so weirdly intimate and innocent for a man who had slapped your ass red only hours ago. Resting his forehead to yours, you inhaled that magical combination of burning sparklers, broken in leather with just a hint of honeyed citrus, "God, I forgot how great you smell." "Hmm… dove, there is nothing on Asgard that smells or tastes as wonderful as you. Believe me. I looked." "Careful Loki… people will say we're in love." At your cheekiness, Loki claimed your lips, his hands sliding over the soft fabric of your dress. Clinging to him, unwilling to let go now that he had returned, you puffed out a pouty sigh as Loki withdrew. “Norns. You know how badly I want you again? I can barely think straight for wanting you.” Oblivious to everything around you, lost in the sweeping pools of Loki’s desire filled expression, you toyed with his collar, “We have a lot of catching up to do, for sure.” “I’d love to get reacquainted-” here he paused to lick over his full lower lip, hunger for you dripping from every word, “-but we are on the run from the Earth’s mightiest heroes.” Snickering, you rolled your eyes at the thought of the Avengers, hours away eating charcuterie in Steve’s backyard. Stepping back, you sighed, “You’re right. So, have you got a plan?” Hanging in the air, your sentence had just left your mouth, your tongue still savoring the syllables when a sizzling crack snapped next to your ear. Swinging you away, forcing you to the sidewalk, Loki spun in a blaze of green. Crouched over you, snarling, “Fury! Always a pleasure to see you.” Stepping from the blazing golden circle supplied by Dr. Strange, Fury crossed onto the Cleveland sidewalk from your now empty garden party, weapon trained on Loki’s broad chest. “Wish I could say the same, Loki. You know it’s time to end this. Let’s take our… deliberations back to the office. Talk about this man to man.” A barking laugh left your lover, “Man to man? I am a GOD! And you… you are pathetic. Your attempts to keep me off Earth, imprisoned, away from my woman have all failed.” “Where are you going to go? You can’t get off the planet without help. My help. And it’s yours, Loki, if-” “If I come quietly? Tail between my legs, submissive and compliant?” As the words left his mouth, you watched, focused on the way Loki was shifting closer to you. The long fingers of his right hand were visible, reaching back for you, a silent signal of his escape plan. Fed up and furious, Nick Fury’s voice was flat with frustration, “Loki. Enough. Let’s do this somewhere people aren’t.” “Oh, I don’t know, this seems as good a place as any!” Circling Loki, edging nearer, Fury tried reasoning, “Endangering civilians isn’t going to make things easier. You know that.” “You know, I’d love to talk about how you betrayed me. How you stonewalled my lady… how you put Captain America in my place, as if he could ever be worthy of her. But, I’m a little busy at the moment.” Snapping his fingers, you jumped to your feet, grabbing for Loki’s outstretched hand. The second your palm connected that feeling of floating overcame you once more. This time you were ready for the roar of traveling through space by Loki’s magic, the push of meeting the ground, the curl of Loki’s body against yours. Blinking, you opened your eyes on new scenery, the chill of a beautiful sea soaked morning breaking around you. Straightening the coat of his pristine suit, Loki smiled at you as his fingers wove between your own, “New Asgard. My brother’s realm, now ruled by Valkyrie, by his abdication. We need to find him. He has a lot to answer for.” --- "Just what in the hell happened? I thought I was very clear about avoiding this exact problem." Pacing, hands firmly on his leather belted waist, Nick Fury growled at the bent head of Steve Rogers. "Now Loki’s on the run, dragging your… Well, what is she exactly Captain? Girlfriend? Fiancé? Mark? along for the ride." At those harsh words, Steve started, ready to focus his own anguish somewhere, anywhere. Fury was as good a target as any, as far as Steve was concerned. Pushing off the paving stones, he was stalled from rising by Natasha's firm hand and quiet words, "We have an idea-" "I don't want ideas. Not from you two. What I want are answers, Romanoff, and I want them now." Sitting on the emptied bench of the picnic table, still covered with your pretty tablecloth and jars of peonies, Natasha sighed, "I didn't have time to alert Steve. Loki made it here first and… reconnected-" "Is that what we're calling it?" Snapping, Nick glared from his good eye, his last name never more appropriate. Exhaling deeply, Natasha Romanoff squared her shoulders, "Sir, Loki… manipulated the circumstances." "Just what in the hell does that mean?" All three available eyes locked onto Steve, “What it means, Fury-” lifting his golden head with a jaw clenched tight, “- what it means, is that the son of a bitch showed up here and had his way with my woman. “After Loki… took advantage of her, I had him. He was contained, here, in my shed. It was modified with the restraints Tony provided with Thor’s direction.” “And still, he got away?” Disbelief clouded every syllable from Fury. That his two top agents had failed and so badly, had the normally stoic director steaming. Standing now, Steve was almost chest to chest with the man who’d been pulling the strings of this entire operation. Natasha, watching closely, knowing that she would only be able to subdue one of them if it came to it, gently palmed the dagger concealed in her waist band. Steve thrust forward, brushing past Fury before facing him once more, “Yea, Nick. He did. He got away.” “Do you know how?” Fury’s fingers were curled around his pocket taser, just in case Captain America needed a jolt, reminding him of who was calling the shots here. It wouldn’t do much except give Nick a head start, but with the Captain looking so rough and so raw, the SHIELD director would take any advantage available. “We believe that… he was set free.” Natasha didn’t want to say the words. You had let Loki go, that much she knew to be true, and she supposed that it made some sort of sense. Steve had been right all along. You and Loki did have some cosmic connection that even time and distance couldn’t eliminate. Intervening for the sake of Fury’s mission and Steve’s pining heart, Natasha had no qualms about why she’d guided you into a relationship, in fact, she still believed that he was a better man for you than Loki. But no. No matter what Rogers did, you had never let go with him like you had with the younger son of Odin. Not that you complained. You had taken all of Natasha’s words of praise, her seemingly well intentioned advice, her flat out advocating for Steve in stride. Sure, your friendship suffered for it. Natasha, never having been one for close ties to anyone, had enjoyed the talking and gossiping. It was nice to have a girl around the tower. One who understood period cramps and cravings. A person who would put on high heels and makeup for a night of dancing then suggest hoodies and shorts for watching Pride and Prejudice. That was over now. When she had been, well, frankly, overpowered by Loki and his new paralyzing weaponry, Natasha knew the plan for a peaceful capture of the prince was over. Having seen the aftermath of your reunion with the space god, having seen Steve’s seething anger, the Black Widow felt her own ire spike. Didn’t you know how hard she had worked? How tireless her efforts had been to keep you and Loki apart? Just how invested she was in joining you and Steve together? It was like you wanted to throw all of that away, squandering those bonding moments where you had become something more than a mission, those times when you were Natasha’s only real friend. Couldn’t you just go along with the plan, unknowing, quietly? She knew you couldn’t, wouldn’t. It wasn’t in your nature. So, channeling that frustration into the cold facade that so many had seen just before they met their end, Natasha had to compartmentalize the “you” she cared about away from the “you” she was responsible for trailing. Both had pissed her off. Now, hearing the gruff grumble of Director Fury bearing down on her, Natasha could only accept the berating tone of his hard words. He wasn’t wrong. She and Steve had fucked up royally, the whole mission was blown, and while Bucky had certainly aided in your escape, he was blameless collateral damage. The consequences fell to you and the Captain. Killing you was going to be hard for them both, but if it had to be done, so be it. Shrugging, Natasha started again, “Nick, we have a tracker on her. We know that she and Loki made it to Cleveland, but he can’t get away from Earth without some aid.” “Well, that’s good to know, if only it was some new intelligence. You’re tracking her? Great! Where is she now? Don't know huh? Well, she and Loki tele-ported from a city sidewalk, in front of me and hundreds of civilians, with no word on their next destination. “And make no mistake. Loki will find a way off of this planet and when that happens, there’ll be nothing else we can do.” “So what? Let him go! He’s won, Nick. It’s over.” Throwing himself down onto the bench, Steve’s dejected voice breaking, he slumped over his feet. “That’s not an option Cap. Loki is more powerful now than he’s ever been. You both read the reports. He wasn’t just hanging around on Asgard. No, Loki was negotiating peace between his native realm of Jotunheim and his adoptive home. He was gifted with tools and technology that no human could hope to wield. Earth ending stuff, Captain.” “Whatever plans you had of making peace are over now. There’s no way Loki gives us any help… and why would he after all this?” “Rogers, I’ll do whatever I must to keep this planet and the creatures on it safe. Loki is a threat to that, just by existing. With his new powers, high placed connections and intergalactic royal title, he had the potential to be unstoppable.” Seething breath puffed out the chests of the two men standing toe to toe. Machismo made Natasha want to vomit. Men. “Look, I’ll go after them. Steve, stay here, in case she reaches out. I’ll take the quinjet and trace their path.” Standing now herself, Natasha turned to the depressed super soldier, patting his arm, “Bucky’s still here. I’ll let you know when I’ve found anything.” “No. Nat, I can’t let you go alone. It’s my fault, too.” “You’re no good to me like this, Rogers.” “But, She’s-” Cutting him off, Natasha stepped closer to Nick, “I know, but you’re too involved. If tough choices need to be made, can you?” Gulping hard, passing a rough hand over his face, Steve frowned, “I can do my duty, if that’s what you’re asking.” “Steve.” Her tone said it all the words she wouldn't vocalize. I don’t trust you, not now, not like this. I don’t believe you will have my back at the cost of the woman you claim to love. I don’t think you can do the job. Fury didn't allow her the chance to elaborate, jumping in with his definitive voice, “Natasha’s right, Rogers. You’re staying right where you are, on the bench. Romanoff and I are going to resolve this issue without any further problems.” Half hearted, strength sapped, Steve raised his eyes to the leather clad figures before him, “Please. Please, Nick… Nat. Don’t hurt her.” “I promise, Steve. I won’t.” And in the second, all three knew she was lying.
--- Finding Thor’s shanty was easier than you expected. A friendly fisherman was only too happy to point you in the right direction. What you saw upon arrival was not entirely what you had expected when visiting Loki’s brother. It was a beat up looking cottage, surrounded by empty cases of cheap Midgardian beer, crumpled take out containers, and a collection of well fed seagulls situated near the edge of the village, “Ugh. What a pig.” “Loki! It’s… charming?” Your admonishing whisper turned the statement into a question at the sight of Loki’s disgusted face. For a second you just stood at Loki’s side, staring at the weather beaten front door, your hand clasped in his strong one. “It’s disgusting.” Agreeing with a small nod, “Um, yes. Yes, it is. But, this is your brother’s house and you said we needed to talk to him. Step one is ringing his bell.” “No. I won’t do it.” You had forgotten about this side of Loki. Fastidious, precise and obstinate, Loki could cop an attitude that had the ability to drive someone crazy. Someone like you. Over the last two years it had been easy to forget all the little things that made Loki prickly. It was even easier to forgive him. Since he’d left, you had looked at your life together through rose glasses, through a gentle fog of missing him, and those elements of your relationship that were less than perfect had been abandoned. Now, standing outside the hovel that Thor called a home, as a fresh day dawned over New Asgard, you were reminded of all those imperfect things that came with loving Loki. A wave of need, love, and longing for him rolled over you. All of those imperfections made you perfect for each other. Rising up on your toes you pressed a small kiss to Loki’s pout, taking the tall God by surprise, “What was that for?” Shyly grinning, you bit into your bottom lip, “I missed you… missed kissing you.” “Then perhaps you should come over here again?” That was all the invitation you needed. Stepping into Loki’s space, your chest resting against his own, you savored the nearness of him, as himself. He wasn’t playing at being Steve. Loki was here, he was with you, and if you weren’t mistaken his hands were drifting down your backside. The rush of it, well, it was familiar and new at the same time. How Loki seemed to inhale your breath, inhale you, as his mouth opened to accept your lips. His gentle exhale, a moan, as his tongue licked over your own. It was overwhelming. It was wonderful. Stepping back, you started to pull away, only for Loki to wrap his arms around your waist, “Not so fast, darling.” Losing yourself, you focused solely on the firmness of his body, the weight of his hands on your hips, the intensity of Loki’s desire. Intoxicating, heady, you leaned into those feelings. Kissing Loki back, you tangled his hair in your hand, earning another one of those sultry sounds that made your legs weak. How had you lived without the passion and pleasure he provided for so long? A smashing crash broke the quiet morning causing you to jump in Loki’s embrace, “What the hell was that?” Immediately on the defense, Loki pushed you behind him, crouching into a protective stance. From over his broad shoulder you watched, worried about the new danger coming your way, unsure how to help your reactive lover. Another rattle had Loki palming his dagger, anticipating an attack. That’s when a raccoon, bigger than your childhood terrier, scuttled from under an overturned trash can carrying what looked like a half eaten slice of pizza in its mouth. “Appalling! Mother would be modified!” Loki cursed as he offered you his hand, kicking away an empty glass bottle, "Why is he living like a dirty animal, surrounded by trash? One would think they were back on Sakaar!" “I don’t know what’s going on with Thor, but we came here for a reason. Let’s get it over with, ok?” Loki shook his head, refusing to step any closer, “He’ll have to come out here. I won’t go inside this… dilapidated shit box.” Sighing, “Fine. Fine, I’ll do it.” Stepping around a pile of broken electronics, you carefully picked your way to the front door, gracefully knocking on the splintering wood. After an answerless few seconds, you tried again, rapping lightly with your knuckles before turning to flash Loki a small smile. That’s when you noticed the striking woman striding towards you and your returned lover. “My, my… is that pretty Prince Loki I see?” Even her voice was sexy, you thought, as the sarcastic words dripped from her full lips. The swaggering stranger radiated cool, calm, sensual energy. Otherworldly energy that made you feel mortal and boring. You couldn’t help tugging your skirt straight and fluffing your hair as she got closer. “Ah… Valkyrie! How are you?” Hugging her tightly when she opened her arms, Loki found that he was genuinely happy to see the fierce, battle tested warrior. Smirking at your man, she countered, “That’s King Valkyrie to you. Your brother crowned me, or have you forgotten?” “On the contrary. It seems like he finally realized what I’ve known all our lives.” “Which is what, exactly?” “He’s not fit to be the ruler of Asgard, obviously.” Drawing right up to Loki, hands on her hips, Valkyrie leveled her dark eyes at his, “What would you know about ruling, Mischief?” “Enough to know that you’re good at it. Enough to know that I no longer want to be the King of Asgard.” “Is that so? And what’s changed your mind?” At those skeptical words, Loki wound an arm around your waist, tugging you close, “I’ve got more… important concerns these days.” Looking you over with her shrewd, searching gaze, but speaking to Loki, “And she likes you? Are you sure?” Laughing, the sound deep and rich, “As much as you like fighting and drinking.” “I hardly drink anymore. As King I have mead only on important occasions, I have to keep my wits about me the rest of the time.” Sharing a laugh, the two shared another small hug before Valkyrie turned to you directly, “Alright. Who’s this then?” Loki started to respond but you cut him off, extending a hard towards the newly crowned King of Asgard, “Uh, I can answer for myself, thank you, Loki. Valkyrie is it? Nice to meet you. And, yes, I love Loki.” Making a face that was part disgust, part pride, Valkyrie smirked, “Love? Oh no. Hasn’t anyone told you yet? Loving the Odinson boys is hard on a girl.” Pulling Loki in for a small kiss, taking him by surprise, “I’ll take my chances.” Shrugging nonchalantly, “Suit yourself.” Focusing on Loki once more, Valkyrie shifted on her feet, “Listen, if you’re looking for Thor, he’s not here.” “Oh? And where exactly is the lovable oaf?” Hitching a thumb over her shoulder, pointing up the hill, “At the palace… the new palace, that is. You can come and, please, don’t forget your girlfriend.” Falling in line behind the King, Loki couldn’t help but add, “You know Val, I think I liked you better when you were drunk.” Snorting in response, “And I know I liked you better when I was drunk, weird right?” Bringing up the rear, your own sarcastic comment dying on your throat when the Palace of New Asgard came into view. Banners of gold shimmered in the light of the rising sun, flapping in the breeze of the young morning, beckoning you closer. You hugged Loki’s arm tighter, excited and exhilarated by the sight before you. “Home is a people, not a place. Those were some of my father’s last words to Thor and I… and while I can never take you to the place where I grew up, this… this is the home of my people.” “Loki… it’s beautiful!” Valkyrie, stopping so you could both catch up, “It’s getting there. Thor’s been a huge help. Come on, let's show you around the palace and let your brother know you’re here.” ---To Be Continued!

I was having a debate with a Kataang shipper, and eventually we came to differing viewpoints on emotional im/maturity that the two years could do between Kataang and Zutara.
And then, how their lives impacted them in terms of growth and maturing too.
And then I came to the realization of this (and sorry, this is long):
There’s this paved pathway Aang had that Zuko never did, just some pointless goal that was meant to forever keep him exiled and with only an uncle to watch him as he lived in anger and regret
Idk, to me, Aang had this destiny that he had to focus on and get to, a part of him matured for it, but he desperately clung to his freedom, which in turn, stifled his emotional maturity. In a way, it’s like Sokka, but even Sokka had what Aang never seemed to acquire in a sense.
Zuko was robbed of that by ozai, Zuko believed in being good and was naturally a good person by heart (as expressed in scenes with his mother, comparisons with Azula, etc) and he tried to save the lives of several by speaking out against the sacrifice of new troops just to win something.
His mother had left them (essentially him as Azula came to distance herself and become more like her father), he wore the weight of realization that Azula was considered superior against him, he bore the crippling thought that he was going to have to spend his life trying to earn his father’s approval, he lived the weight of his father snatching the role of Fire lord from his uncle, the knowledge that it was wrong as he heard Azula talk ill of iroh and ozai bash him to earn the title, and then how he was expendable to his father.
Aang lived among people who he loved and in turn, loved or adored him back, and tragically, he lost his friends to his role as the avatar, but he always had Bumi and the some of the monks (especially one) and Appa.
Zuko had a scar that engraved the idea that he was nothing but a failure, damaged him into thinking his ideals and morals were wrong when they were what was needed, that he shouldn’t have been born and was lucky enough to even be alive in a sense.
Zuko lost his briefly earned pathway to be the next Fire lord. He was sent on a destination to find the avatar who wasn’t considered a last saving grace or sliver of hope, to never be found again.
To a degree? He knew it was in vain to search for him, but he had nothing else to do but try.
Because not finding him secured his role as a failure, it let him lose to Azula, it didn’t really avenge his uncle, it didn’t secure his right to live if he was basically exiled.
And to another degree, he knew his father abandoned him. But that meant he would have to settle in the knowledge that both his parents left him orphaned in a sense.
He operated under the care, guidance and love of his uncle. The only support in his life. The only one who truly cared for him enough to stay by his side.
He was surrounded by soldiers on ship who didn’t respect him. He was mocked everywhere he went as much as he was feared (something he didn’t want to begin with before the Agni Kai), and he had no home.
I feel like that, especially occurring at the age of 13 I believe, more than forced a few aspects of him to grow up and mature. Enough to acknowledge when he was in the wrong without someone telling him, enough to know when to fix his mistakes or make up for them, enough to realize who was really there for them and who he could be vulnerable with.
To some level, I think he and Katara were on the same wavelength because she witnessed her mother die to save her, she had a huge responsibility in her tribe, she was of an important figure of birth and considered royal, she was practically playing mother to several, and the last water bender to live in the tribe but wasn’t allowed to really brush up on it.
Being with Aang and Sokka, then eventually toph, I think it also aged her to the point where the gap between her and Zuko in ages didn’t matter, it was like it taxed them both enough that they both had what the other was missing.
My mother and I had this debate that I think can apply to this:
“What’s worse, to wake up after being cryogenically frozen after 200 years and see the world new/different but you still be the same as before?
Or wake up after like x amount of years from a coma, and have your childhood robbed from you because you’ve aged and everyone else around you has and moved on?”
We eventually settled on, well they both suck, but seeing the reality of what your life once was is especially crippling. And we settled on the coma one
To me, Aang was just cryogenically frozen.
The world he knew died and a new one began in a sense. Everyone he knew and cared for was dead. His temple was gone and his people.
But he didn’t really have to see reminders of it because it was just history and the past. It was essential, beyond the storyline, for him to be frozen for so long because he didn’t have his old life to look back on and hinder him, all he could do was press forwards because he can’t go back and regret if nothing is there. Seeing the temple? It’s like a relic now, not what he once knew. It’s not as he left it. It’s something else now standing in its place. It’s just now, what is.
Beyond the whole weird avatar mojo stuff, he’s living with no reminders. It’s kinda more, benefiting in a sense? He can move on, he doesn’t have guilt to face him everyday.
Zuko, he was the coma scenario.
He lived his life thinking good of the world and people, and then it’s like what life was really like was revealed to him. And then he just got hit by a truck out of nowhere (consider the metaphorical coma inducing truck an Agni Kai with his father) and everything just kinda, paused for a long while.
Mother is gone, father disowned him, sister couldn’t care less if he was dead like dear daddy, and there’s kinda no point now?
He’s living in this rage induced haze that he’s sorta, disconnected from who he once was. He’s broken and suspended in time of heart ache and self loathing.
Iroh is standing by his bedside and talking to his unconscious state, and the words are going in, but there’s no point because he can’t take them in and process them.
He’s shut down.
And then, it’s like meeting Katara in the cave, it sorta wakes him up for a second, grants a miracle and shows him there’s something outside of the pitch black he’s been seeing for so long.
And then the past comes back in the form of Azula, and false promises and the offering of restoration to what once was now takes over and he falls back unconscious and no one can get through to him again.
Eventually, when the realization hits that he can’t go back, he wakes up
But Zuko now lives with seeing his past everywhere around him. He’s got the knowledge that he’s aged and he needs to accept it and adapt.
He lives with the constant reminders because they’re still fresh, they didn’t go away, and they’re crippling as ever.
That’s why I believe that in a way, Zuko aged and matured enough to be capable of Katara’s affections and love more than Aang. That he could be her equal. Because he’s living with reminders, while Aang is living in an air of ignorance and bliss to a sense because it’s just history, everything has aged or been rebuilt that it’s not the same world he once knew. He’s got a new lease on life
And Zuko has some physical therapy to do. He’s got muscles he needs to strengthen just to walk again in the form of finding his true good nature and being the future Fire lord his people needs. Being the son that wants to take down his father and sister.
Zuko is still young, he still has room to grow and learn more, but Katara has kinda already established herself in a sense and aged more than she should have playing mother and voice of reason at times, even if she has more to learn too.
And I think they’re on almost equal wavelengths to better understand each other and be a supportive life partner together.

Meta on Sun Xiang & Qiu Fei’s Relationship
So the other day, Wack from the TKA discord mentioned in passing how Qiu Fei and Sun Xiang are like two ships passing in the night. The image stuck with me because it’s both poetic and accurate: two people occupying the same space, but heading in opposite directions, and never managing to stand on the same ground.
It’s notable that in a novel the size of TKA, the two almost never interact. In fact, there are only two examples of SX & QF speaking to each other outside of Glory in the entire novel. BB just didn’t fill in the rest, as he does, but what we have is consistent. I think it’s worth looking closely at their connection, because the novel very obviously sets these two characters up as foils of one another: Sun Xiang as the light, and Qiu Fei as his shadow. QF and SX are teammates who have several things in common (young Battlemages connected to Ye Xiu who have been trained to work together) - things that should draw the two together - but end up serving as a backdrop to the ways they are opposites.
Let’s start with QF and SX’s very first interaction on page. Context: SMC has just given EE a magnificent chewing out about how all their worrying about YX is pointless, because YX seeks nothing but victory and EE is just another opponent to him.
“Su Mucheng got up and left the conference room.
The room was completely silent. Just when everyone was wondering how long this silence would last, someone finally broke it. Someone stood up.
"I’ll be going to practice."
Qiu Fei.
This rookie had only just been promoted from the training camp this season. To think he dared to speak out against the Club’s manager. "I’ll be going to practice." By saying that, it meant he agreed with Su Mucheng.
Ignoring everyone else’s gaze towards him, Qiu Fei left the conference room. The remaining people looked at one another, occasionally sneaking a glance at Cui Li.
This time, their captain Sun Xiang spoke up: "Haha, that child. He’s really got a personality. How interesting."
F*ck! Everyone slapped their forehead. Bro, I think you’re misreading the issue here. (885)”
The dynamic established here of ‘SX misreading QF’ is consistent all the way to the end of the Challenger League. QF has just made an extremely symbolic gesture of support for SMC, YX, and YX’s ideals of pursuing victory without distraction. All of that meaning completely flies over SX’s head. His reading of the situation is pure, shallow surface meaning only. His reaction is an abrupt change of emotional tone, and helps draw a dividing line between the two characters from the very beginning. It also highlights the different maturity levels between the two characters (The very next line is the famous “It wasn’t Xiao Shiqin’s first time witnessing Sun Xiang’s stupidity,” btw XD).
Additionally, we can read the line about SX finding QF interesting as a suggestion that SX didn’t think QF was interesting before now. We don’t know when QF became his shadow, but this scene happens in December and QF has been on the team since August/September. The options I see here are either A. the two hadn’t interacted much B. They interacted but SX just didn’t know QF well.
In our next interaction, QF has just lost his match to YX in the Challenger League group round:
"You played well." Sun Xiang actually acted like a captain for once and comforted Qiu Fei, who was returning to the bench. Qiu Fei smiled, but didn't say anything before returning to his seat, but his gaze was aimed at Excellent Era's competition booth. On the field, they didn't have any way to communicate with words. Everything was based on their mechanics, attacks, defense, movement, and dodges. In this match, Qiu Fei had given it his all, but still lost. However, there would always be defeat in competition. He might've lost this time, but next time he'd win for certain, no matter who he was up against.
After giving his encouragement to one of their players, he casually glanced towards Happy and suddenly raised his voice. "It's just a shame that you left a Ye Qiu with only half his health for me. Even if I win, there will be no honor in it! (1016)”
Again, SX completely misreads the situation. QF doesn’t need to be comforted. At all. The following narration makes that clear - QF is already looking toward his next match. The mismatched emotional tone here between QF’s state and SX’s reply even makes me cringe a little bit. Like his mentor YX (who SX has just disparaged), QF is thinking about victory, but SX is thinking about honor. Their priorities are completely different - QF & SX aren’t on the same wavelength at all. Even after SX has trained together with QF as his shadow for months, he doesn’t seem to know QF’s personality. Based on this interaction, I’d find it difficult to believe the two of them are close.
Next, let’s take a look at their in-game exchanges during the Challenger League Finals and what they say about SX & QF’s partnership as light & shadow.
“It was easy to think of what Sun Xiang was feeling like after being played around like that. He had been preparing to show his superiority over Ye Xiu in this team competition. Not yelling at Qiu Fei to move to the side was already a huge improvement for him. (1039)”
I bring up this quote because it means that SX has previously yelled at QF...who’s supposed to be his shadow and whose entire job is to help him. And not doing so is a ‘huge’ improvement.
I don’t intend this as ‘SX was mean to QF.’ Pre character development SX would probably yell at any of his teammates. It’s just especially ‘ouch’ because QF’s entire job is to stick by SX’s side and coordinate with OAL.
Okay, next quote.
“In the end, Sun Xiang was forced to retreat and leapt backwards twice to just barely dodge the attack. However, Soft Mist wasn't done yet. She was just about to execute her next attack. However, Qiu Fei's Combat Style attacked from the flank, stopping Soft Mist from continuing her assault.
From an outsider's point of view, it was a very normal assistance from a teammate, but in Sun Xiang's eyes, it was disgraceful! Just Soft Mist alone had forced him to require Qiu Fei's assistance? (1040)
QF is supposed to be SX’s helper, but SX thinks being helped is disgraceful. The narrative even calls this out as unreasonable. When one half of a partnership rejects the other person’s help, that is not a strong or stable partnership.
Here’s one more:
“Sun Xiang had originally planned on continuing to attack Soft Mist, but then saw Combat Form force her back. Annoyance flickered in his heart as he had One Autumn Leaf chase after her, but after the first step, he suddenly remembered that rescuing their healer should be their priority. He immediately turned around and headed towards Woven Shadow. As for Qiu Fei's Combat Form? He just quietly followed alongside One Autumn Leaf. Only a professional's eyes would have been able to see the significance of that Rising Dragon Soars the Sky. (1041)
Once again, QF acts exactly as a shadow ought to by covering SX’s mistakes, and it just makes SX annoyed with him. I’d like to pause here to remind you that QF’s dream was always to stand beside One Autumn Leaf and seek victory side by side with YX. As OAL’s shadow, technically he’s achieved a piece of that dream. But SX’s reactions here are a rejection of QF as his shadow. SX doesn’t want a partner, SX wants individual glory.
How ironic, that QF should gain what he hoped for and be cruelly denied it at the same time.
If you’d like an extra bit of pain, I’ll remind you that QF is both perceptive and thoughtful. It isn’t unreasonable at all to believe that QF sensed SX’s attitude toward his help. :)
I’ll end with one last quote:
“Sun Xiang turned his view with this attack. What he saw caused him to charge over like he had gone crazy, trying to use his own body to block the three Anti-Tank Missiles.
But it was too late. Everything was too late. Lord Grim didn't just send out Anti-Tank Missiles. A grenade had also rolled over, across the ground.
Combat Form, Qiu Fei's Combat Form had run out of health.
The shadow that had been with him the whole way, helping him. In truth, Sun Xiang hadn't thought that he was very important, but in that moment, he truly wished to save Combat Form from death, willing, even, to use his own character, One Autumn Leaf, to shield his shadow from death.
But it was all too late. Engulfed by the light of the explosion, Combat Form could no longer escape and his health fell to zero. Combat Form, he had fallen.
AAAAAHHHHHH!
In the player booth, no one could hear how Sun Xiang had screamed. (1051)”
At the very end, SX realizes QF’s value. But it’s too late, both for the match and for his partnership with QF. SX transfers soon afterward and doesn’t get a chance to fix his mistakes.
I have to wonder - did SX’s belief that having a shadow wasn’t important transfer over into a belief that QF also wasn’t very important? Is this why SX doesn’t seem to know much about QF?
That’s the last we see of the two characters interacting, but I’ll point out that SX earns best partners with ZZK the very next season. Is that SX learning from his mistakes and throwing himself into becoming the best possible partner he could be? I’d like to think so.
How does this dynamic play out when QF returns to the Alliance with EE? SX, older and wiser and aware how badly he failed QF...come on guys where’s the fic
