You know, now that I think about it, Black Sails from Joji’s perspective is just basically Shogun backwards

You are on an island far from home and you have a katana

You don’t speak the language but your skills are valuable to a small crew

You are in the middle of a power struggle between a bunch of guys who hate each other for reasons unknown to you but you stick around because, hey, it’s not like you’re able to get home

You get involved in a war between a splinter group and an empire and god do you look cool doing it.

Did I mention you have a katana?

Joji is out here living his backwards John Blackthorne life and no one is considering the comedic potential of his internal dialogue

That makes Flint Toranaga and you know, I buy it.

Captain Walrus Cookie

AYE! Make way for the guard dog of Choco Mud Town, Captain Walrus Cookie! He kept the peace in the town for 2 decades, chasing off dangerous characters for the often neglected edge of the republic with his motley crew for no more than a few free drinks at the pub. Even so, he rarely ever got physically violent with troublemakers. More relied on careful wording and dominating size to intimidate those causing problems. Always believing words carry more weight than a punch.

Black sails s2e2 is so fun and interesting bc Flint really seems baffled and doubtful about Silver's plan to ingratiate himself with the crew through narsty gossip. And that didn't make sense to me at first bc obviously we know he understands the power of stories and information, we've seen him manage his image and wield rhetoric, he was even there in episode 1 when gossip brought down Richard Guthrie. It did the same to him in London, really. But he doesn't think to use it the way Silver does. Which to me is all in the someone/no-one of it all.

To me Flint's instinct is toward the power of a king, and he's really good at the stories that scaffold it. He also just doesn't really give a shit abt the minutae of his men's lives in the face of his larger goals. Silver's instinct is to remove himself from view, to use stories that never reference him at all. He began as a sailor not a leader, and he had no desire to become one. He can get into the minutae in a way Flint can't and he thinks he can walk the tightrope of being the one they come to for information without becoming a player on the board. Unfortunately he's too good at appearing likeable (and not as good at slipping away as his evil twin Max) and inadvertently becomes A Man of the Walrus Crew, which is enough to get him stuck in the narrative :) And Flint, too good at creating kings and always kind of wishing he could be no one instead, helps write the king that kills* him. They tell their stories so well they end up on the other side of each other. This is a really fun show about which i am normal. :)

while we’re on the issue of historical accuracy… well, they get almost everything wrong about the Ranger crew. Which I don’t have a problem with, since I LOVE the BS versions of Anne, Charles and Jack and they are wildly entertaining regardless, but the fact that Jack actively mutinied against Vane to become captain and didn’t even meet Anne Bonny until after he got a pardon from Woodes Rogers is a whole different story.

I do like how they teased the mutiny against Vane in s1, with moments of “ooh Jack is scheming behind his back! what will he do?” to just completely 180 this and have them be besties for the rest of the show

Black Sails gets a lot right, but in the interest of my sanity, some historical inaccuracies that make me want to fight god (John E Steinberg):

- woodes rodgers side part im gonna scream a QUEUE with a SIDE PART omfg as if i didn’t hate him enough already

- sharp shooting muskets lol

- eleanor keeping her waist length hair down in what i can only imagine is a 120 degree heat index accounting for humidity

- 90% of women’s costumes would be incredible if they had wide arms, cuffs, skirt supports, and their skjdfghsjkd hair up

- rubber soled boots. listen. rubber soles were invented in 1899. silver is sneaky but not that sneaky

- i can’t explain how feral i am seeing 1750s naval uniforms in 1700-1715. 

- naval uniforms didn’t exist until 1748 when the Scottish and British navies were combined. am i being pedantic? yes. do i care? no.

- i don’t know what year ab oil was invented but it was definitely post Charles “Tit’s Out” Vane

- honestly everything about Vane i hate love him but he looks like he sells acid at Phish shows

- where are everyone’s hats and caps?

- Miranda is my hero my love my heart but in the London flashbacks she’s wearing a portrait gown/bedgown which is like going outside in your PJs im not upset just disappointed 

- woodes rodgers casually divorcing his wife i had to stop the ep and yell it’s absolutely patently sociopath behavior YOU CAN’T JUST CAUSALLY DIVORCE PPL IN 1715 YOU HAVE TO GET AN ACT OF PARLIMENT WHERE YOUR ENTIRE SEXUAL HISTORY IS DEBATED PUBLICALLY AND ANY RESULT RUINS YOUR WIFE’S LIFE. she can never marry again, loses all property, loses custody of all children, loses all social standing. 

- mrs. rodgers was very generous to not become a pirate and kill him personally 

- Hornigold’s facial hair he looks like a confederate general 1/10 points for keeping it clean i guess

- if you wear a wig you don’t keep a cool 2010 tousled haircut you keep your head shaved sorry thomas i love you but those are the rules

- weird choice but A+ for the enthusiasm of putting the s2 spanish navy in 16th c costumes and then ignoring that completely and never mentioning it again

- i cant even hate on Idelle’s s1 hot topic look you do you girl love the fluffy panties and bustier <3
