Fourteen Days of MHA: Day 3

Light Fades to Rain

Okay, let's gush. Here are my feelings about the anime adaptation of chapters 360-362: season 7 episode 11. This will quickly devolve from eloquent discussion to raging madness I promise.

The opening five minutes are the weakest part of the episode. This is the only section I will lodge any complaints about, and honestly they're not that serious.

The sadomasochism got toned down :P

I kind of expected it, and honestly I get why. Even though it was scaled back, the scene was effective enough for most viewers because there's just something about seeing it animated that makes it feel visceral anyways. The detail was always going to be reduced in the art when adapted to animation, and a lot of that art could've looked really bad without the necessary detail.

But it wouldn't be on brand for me if I didn't mention that it bummed me out lol.

The only other thing I can complain about isn't even an issue with the episode, it's an error in the subtitles.

"...you're just goldfish poop next to All For One."

a) It should be "One For All," not "All For One."

b) I don't think they should have kept it as "goldfish poop." Sorry to any language purists out there, but the idiomatic meaning of this phrase in Japanese will not get picked up by an English-speaking audience--and that idiom is important. It has an impact on how Katsuki behaves going forward. I think the subtitles should have changed that to something like "a minnow in One For All's wake" or "a tag-along weakling," ANYTHING to get the point across that Tomura is trying to inflict psychological damage by telling Katsuki he'll never amount to anything on the level of One For All. That message informs the rest of the episode!

Now, if that's the only complaint I have about this whole episode--a slightly too-fast-paced-under-detailed opening scene and a bad subtitle--then I'm a happy camper. And indeed that is the only complaint I have.

This episode is a masterpiece of adaptation.

The focus on the Big Three is so good because it does such a good job of masking where the episode is going but it's perfectly in-theme because of the parallels the three of them have with Izuku and Katsuki. IT JUST WORKS MAN. I LOVE IT.

The music that plays when Katsuki mutters is an excellent choice, though I wish they could have done something to hammer the point home more that he was indeed muttering and analyzing like Izuku does. Maybe the little "mutter" text would've been dissonant in tone lol but still I wish there was a way they could've done it. I do think the point does come across in the end still, but it's just more impactful when you get to see the little "mutter" text come full circle. Yeah yeah, manga vs anime and all that.

I didn't expect the tone they went with for Jeanist's reaction to Katsuki's muttering, but it was just different not like bad or anything. I kinda liked the whole "what the fuuuuck" vibe of it. I was thinking more like "Holy shit, I'm a proud dad" tone but this works XD

Jeanist is such a dad.

HE SPARKLE. KATSUKI, HE SPARKLE. IT SO PRETTY. AT LAST.

The animators were SOOOO trying to hide the twist this episode from the anime-only viewers, they didn't even put Katsuki on the commercial bumpers, they didn't want to SPOIL THE SURPRISE. IT'S SO GOOD.

Lost it at Tenko's freak out (damn voice actor wow) and Mirio's "g-gomen." I need the dub of this scene so bad.

JEANIST MY FIRST LOVE, DAD-ING SO HARD ALL OVER THIS EPISODE LOOK AT HIM GO.

Nejire is adorable as hell and everyone in MHA is so easily read as autistic it's remarkable actually.

They really put the typography behind the plasma cannon they actually did that.

UNF THAT PIANO. THE PIANO GOES OFF ALL OVER THE PLACE THIS EPISODE, DAMN.

Also good job on making the plasma cannon blast look small and precise to contrast Katsuki's attack last episode, because Katsuki definitely has more firepower but Tamaki has the finesse to concentrate the attack for a sustained period.

Minseok: he rarely comes to my side idek why so I can’t really tell a lot about him. But overall he’s overloaded with energy. A BALL OF ENERGY IN SUMMARY.

Junmyeon: i am speechless because he’s so… wow. There is a language barrier between exo and us but what touched my heart the most is that he takes time to listen to what we shout/chant about. He listens to all of the fans, and cares so much for the members. He’s literally an angel that has graced us with his presence. I legit felt the strong bond that he has with exols and with exo.

Baekhyun: last year i was enamored by his smile. This year is still the same. Baekhyun knows how to speak and hype up his aeris. He’s such a kid that has an unending supply of energy. And one more thing, his dancing was on top of his game! I can’t even call it rude like I usually do because seeing it in person is way different. His dancing has a vibe and i live for that vibe.

Jongdae: I just saw an angel and his name is Kim Jongdae. Wow his smile has made his way to my heart? He was legit shining and just something that is so him. He loves to make eye contact with exo-ls. Whether you are on the standing area, or when you are seated at the farthest seat, he will make sure to look at everyone and just wow feel his love.

Chanyeol: king of being extra. List all the extra stuffs that exo did and it will end up with a result of him being the cause. Heaven is such a soft and chill song but what I saw that time is Chanyeol shuffling to Heaven. For his part in Do It Together he did a dab for each second of it. If jongin dances to something like nae nae, Chanyeol is the cause of it. BUT he is so soft for exo-ls. And wow he’s legit a soft soft giant. Crouches down a lot so that exols can take better pics and vids of him.

Kyungsoo: He was so comfortable with the crowd I was blessed to see his weird weird side! He is legitimately so handsome upclose. And wow the look in his eyes when he looks at exo-ls? Words can’t describe. During the encore, he always aims for the weirdest looking toy. His heart shaped smile will engrave its way to your heart. You melt when you see that smile in pics? You will want to faint in genuine happiness when you see it in person.

Jongin: beware of his Kai persona. His Kai persona is very very dangerous. Kai casually drops a smirk and wink at random times. You need to be 24/7 mentally prepared because he drops it like a bomb. His arms are so meaty and defined I SCREAMED BUT his Jongin side? He gets the trophy. He is seriously a ball of never ending softness. He’s got the crowd the whole crowd on the palm of his hands, Everyone has fallen for his charms. He takes time to interact with his fans. He is so genuine and wow his smile? I’ll do anything for it to stay on his face forever. One last thing, the way he dances, his body control, his facial expression, the vibes, it is so Kim Jongin. There was a time where I was so speechless i ended up only saying “Woooooow……” as I watch him dance. He is so passionate and everyone felt it. he made me see what art of dancing looks like.

Sehun: Seven words: Cute and hot at the same time. What strucked me the most is when he looks at exols. You can legitimately feel his love for exols. But seriously, i dont even know how it works but he’s cute, handsome, and hot all at the same time. F*ck all those who says that he can’t dance. Seeing it in person is so different. He has this vibe and just wow standing ovation for his dancing.

Bonus: I used to say that sekai’s Lady Luck dance was so rude and just unf. But seeing it in person? I was wrong. It was legitimately an art. Seeing them dance together, I was left breathless. I don’t know I can’t even explain on how beautiful their dance was, Their chemistry in dancing is so good and on top of their game.

Anxiety/Tasmania Bound

Going to Tasmania Wednesday morning - but still experiencing an immense amount of anxiety, and what the sources are I would have no idea. To be a bit blunt though, I’m actually a bit sick and tired of people constantly telling me to find “what” the source is. In short, I don’t believe it’s actually that easy. A numerous amount of things are probably causing these panic attacks, it’s not just as easy as “oh yeah, it’s probably because I’ve been rejected from ten jobs in the past two weeks and haven’t been able to score a single interview”. And while I’m sure that while this does add to the anxiety piling up within me, I don’t think one thing would solely be the reason.

Anyway yesterday, I had a me day. These type of days, I would usually beat myself up about over because I’m not “using my valuable time” to good use. Time is money as they always say - and yes, I’m guilty of comparing my hours in the day to my hourly rate hahaha. It is by far, the WORST thing any human being can do to themselves in my personal opinion. Yes, it’s motivating yourself to use your time to good use, that you are valuable as a human being and that being productive results in work. BUT, I also feel as if it can deprive you from relaxing and being in the moment. Just letting time take you, and absorbing your surroundings. And I used these *valuable hours* to just literally, play Final Fantasy XIV and Abe’s Odyssey: New and Tasty - because it’s my life ya know. I mean I could of done something a little bit more productive but, I really had a good time ya know. Though I do get the whole guilty feeling of when my housemate comes home and it is that awkward conversation of “yes I have been at home all day, in my pyjamas, eating tortilla chips and playing video games” don’t judge me vibes. 

I’m leaving on the plane with Gen and Hannah at 8:30am for Dark Mofo ahhhhh so much excitement! Even if the whole event isn’t as amazing (as much as I would love it to be), just to get away from everything right now is what I need. I think I do have the travel blues, or the no-direction blues... or the I hate capitalism fuck men and capitalism vibes. And sitting at home with a bunch of things that need to be done, so many thoughts going through my head, no-where to really go. So I’m bringing no check-in just my backpack, my nintendo switch, and a couple of books to focus on. Without the guilty feeling of having something that needs to be done around me. Looking forward to good chill vibes, and we have already booked our events including some music gigs, art exhibits and so fourth - so I am super excited!

Anyway that’s it for me, I think I’ll bring a lil booklet along with me to Tasmania to maybe doodle in and write some cute things. I always appreciate things like that. Also I’m eight months smoking free ahhhh, proud but also will kill for a ciggy haha :)  Until next time, Shan.
