A little family stroll through the Venetian in Las Vegas.

I actually got to visit Vegas for a few days. We did so much in that amount of time it felt longer.

Just gotta say: if you are able, check out the Arte Museum. It is amazing and totally worth it to pay extra for the refreshments. The tea is so good!

Edolas Lucy, Natsu and Gajeel with their EarthLand counterparts as Netnavis

For Natsu and Gajeel, or Dragneel.exe and Iron.exe, wanted to base them off their dragon force forms. With Lucy or Stella.exe, I based it off her Virgo + Leo transformation.

For the backgrounds, they’re pictures I took while I was on vacation recently. Behind Lucy is a fountain from the Venetian in Las Vegas, behind Natsu is the Grand Canyon, and behind Gajeel is a shot from inside the Aria.

Of all of the Las Vegas Strip resorts that promise that sort of themed immersive experience, The Venetian probably does the best job of the ones I’ve visited to this point. I’ve walked around New York, New York on my first trip and it feels like a cheap facsimile of what New York City actually looks like, and while I’ve never been to Paris, it’s clearly meant to be an idea of Paris rather than walking around the Seine and feeling like you’re Sabrina. Caesar’s Palace feels Roman, but I didn’t feel immersed in anything specific. Likewise, The Bellagio was built to be the height of luxury when it was conceived and constructed, but it doesn’t feel like the Italian village that it was modeled after because it feels like a vague Mediterranean-themed mall. 

Circus Circus certainly promises a themed experience, but it definitely veers towards that of circus nightmares rather than that of dreams, but that’s a story for another post.

Is it all cheesy? Of course it is, but that’s what makes it fun. I would probably find The Venetian absolutely exhausting to stay in as a hotel guest, but it’s fun as hell to visit and to marvel at its scale and, frankly, majesty. This represents the heights that maximalism can achieve and somehow make it accessible to anyone who can travel to Las Vegas, and it’s frankly better than what the Imagineers did in EPCOT and it costs significantly less to walk through this resort.

I might be in my feelings after watching Jenny Nicholson’s exhaustive and excellent dissection of the failure of The Star Wars Hotel, but she’s spot-on on basically all fronts, and the issues she brings up are evident across other new, large-scale “luxury” experiences in places like, well, Las Vegas.
