weirdest part about veilguard to me was how it was obviously set up to use classic arthuriana tropes/iconography in a similar vein to inquisition with christianity/catholicism but it. just. didn't...?

Usual "what others do isn't my business, my blogs are diaries and I'm allowed to have thoughts without telling others what to do" disclaimer
I'm getting so irritated for personal reasons (building storm, memories, personal disagreements with how this time and place in history treats gods, etc) with the lack of connection the average most connected people have to gods nowadays. I feel like at some point if you want to connect with, bond with, Lev and make him a part of your life you should at least once do trancework dances with him, or some other means of total body possession or an attempt at it and/or merging consciousness and eyes briefly
Hes such a hands on god and to an extent he will mirror you, less in terms of his nature being mirroring but more so because he will put in what you put in. If you give him distant love and distant channelling, treating him like the moon: something you know always has an effect on the waters of your life and something you revere but rarely see and keep in the distant sky... you'll get that. You'll get him directing you and stepping in like a stern and - examples don't matter honestly. Lev will pretty much always be cordial and roleplay the god you want in your life, but at the end of the day you'll always just be serving a distant purpose if you just set up an altar and keep him distant with distancing prayers
To actually bond with him... Things like drums and dancing, actually understanding That Which Makes The Waters Dance, actually understanding the Lord of Consciousness as ever-permeating... If you want to understand him you need to feel him, because he understands through feeling and being. Take a session of intense drumming and throwing yourself into a trance to actually understand the way he makes your body move, to feel the waters of your own body - blood, cerebrospinal fluid, semen, tears, saliva, whatever you have inside you - flow and move into place. Understand the mind of the Sky itself
Take something guided by him - theres so many reasons he's heavily associated with cannabis and alcohol - move yourself into his sphere, cross the boundaries between you. Throw yourself into the black of the sky and you'll find it's water.
There's so many things that forge actual bond with him. The Earth-Shaker doesn't move the Earth in Christian-esque rituals of praying to hollow temples and ringing gentle bells, he's the force that aligns your blood flow with beats in music, the beat itself, he's the drumming of hooves across the earth that tear into it and reorganise it, the wild horses that eat flesh alongside the wolves, the black dogs seeping through the veins in creation, the animal awareness peaking like bloodlust in the rutting deer... You absolutely can sit there meeting him in fancy robes in front of an altar where he commands you like a father or a god-husband but... again. i suggest anyone looking to actually work with him has at least one moment where the Sun itself burns a hole through your ignorance (ignorance is something we all have, we all wear) and shines its blinding light on your consciousness so that you have an atemporal space of connection to him from then on

the 2024 met gala theme will be ovid's metamorphosis to respect the importance of greek classicalism in fashion aesthetic principles of construction. lil nas x will be dressed as actaeon's hounds, a metaphor for the punishment of black men's existence being seen as predatory. kylie jenner will wear a crimped taffeta toga. florence welch will be in dior as medusa, veiled and weeping. she is a statement about the destruction of intent and story in the face of achronistic politics: medusa can't be a monster if she's a woman, medusa can't be a woman if she's a monster. drake wears a tailored black suit with a black tie and white shirt. seventeen different women dress as botticelli's venus in some form and rip each other to shreds in rage and divine madness, watched over by dionysus, who is dressed as jack black

“Hear me out”s are a losing game. You are better off betting your life savings on a single game of poker. You can’t do a meaningful hear me out, it isn’t possible. The very nature of the internet is people lowkey trying to come across as “I Have Seen Fucked Up Things In My Time” experts and survivors. Anything that can threaten to put a crack in that fragile ego will immediately be shot down. “Hear me out”s aren’t regular statements, they are challenges, you are trying to come across as someone with Higher Fetish Power than others, which directly clashes with someone’s I Have Seen Fucked Up Things In My Time-fu. No one will ever admit to have a less esoteric fetish or kink than others. Not on the internet.
“Hear me out”s say something about the shooter: They too want to Have Seen More Fucked Up Things, and not only have they normalized it, they get off on it. They usually append “cowards” to the “hear me out” because it is a statement of me > you. The most annoying kind of person, in the most annoying arena, challenging you to the most annoying duel. The best counter is to shoot it down because that has no counter in this context: They already showed their hand, you can simply call it a bad hand and win.
“Hear me out”s are self-destruction. Your “hear me out” could have been a link and a “this is hot”. You willingly chose the losing battle when it would have taken less effort to not lose. “Hear me out” is not about your “hear me out” ultimately, it’s about you thinly veiled with something else. Sun Tzu warned you about this.

Veilguard fails to realise that for those who believe, faith is stronger than anything, even facts.
Right in the beginning of Veilguard all the Dalish/veil jumpers are so nonchalant and against their gods returning, as if they were convinced offscreen that their whole faith was based on a lie (even though they all still wear vallaslin) and their gods were Evil™. This, again, fails to consider that the vast majority of the Dalish would either not believe or not care because it's their religion, their faith.
Morally ambiguous gods exist in real life religions too and it didn't stop people from believing in them. Divine morality transcends mortal understanding, so their actions are always rightful. This also leads to the concept of a 'god-fearing' person - even the term used (θεοσεβής) can mean both respect and fear. Mortals are humbled by the gods' power and greatness, and willfully submit to their divine authority.
You needn't go further than the goddamn Bible itself to see countless examples of unethical things that God did/supported including legitimization of slavery and punishment (Exodus 21:20-21 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property." is one unhinged example), cannibalism, many kinds of violence, war, and of course, genocide, one of which was literally the deliberate destruction of nearly all humanity and living creatures on earth. The god of the most widely practiced religion in the world for millenia. Ask a devout Christian if they would stop believing in God just because 'um actually he is bad'.
Mystery is also a great aspect of religion, which also makes it an excellent worldbuilding element for writers. Mystery adds to the immersion because just like the characters, we don’t know everything except the beliefs and unanswered questions. And we're not supposed to, because this is how religion works in real life, where faith is about belief rather than what’s fully understood. It makes the story feel more real and engaging. Professional writers - of a AAA title no less - should know this.
Religion was one of the greatest themes in all previous games, especially Andrastianism and the Elven pantheon. Reducing it all to 'the Evanuris did it' is disappointing to say the least, and even if it was the truth that only the writers knew, they should have kept it that way, or at least some of the mystery. It adds immersion, drama, nuance, it encourages thought and discussion. For all Veilguard failed in the 'show, don't tell' rule, in this case this is too much exposure, and not even done in a good way. ''Religion is fake, so now everyone's atheist or unfazed. Oh, except for one (1) person who is mildly upset'' is not how faith works, especially in a setting so religious as Thedas.
