The vanishing soldier

eleven is fascinating to me because he came right off the back of tens horrible traumatic breakdown after he lost everything and he immediately tried to establish himself as the opposite of that. he is funny and goofy and almost childlike, and he bulldozes on in his adventures with amy like nothing happened at all. but then something happens and his masks slips and it's like oh! the core of this man is still anger. he is so so angry all of the time and this façade is the only thing stopping him from being consumed by it. he isn't over any of it and he hasn't moved on. he is wearing a fez and laughing but under that all that exists is age old anger and grief and it is going to consume him
#i do think that this pit of anger was eventually covered and soothed by the ponds#but he didn't adress it and he couldn't even look at it until he was twelve#when he stopped pushing back and repressing everything and finally allowed himself to exist as he was#but ok listen#its all layed out in the first 3 episodes of season 5 and in the way amy sees him#episode 1. here is the new doctor he is energetic and reeling and fun#episode 2. the space whale comparison. here is the new doctor. he is unthinkably ancient and almost godlike but he is so so kind#and patient and good. he is ancient and lonely but he can't stand to see children cry. so the doctor helps people#episode 3. daleks. the doctor is a soldier. these are his age old enemies. he wants them dead and he will stop at nothing#all logic and reason vanish. he is hitting the dalek with a pipe and yelling his head off while amy watches in horror#like obviously we know why but amy didnt#this is not a sane or rational man he is unstable and angry#and in that episode he was stripped back to what he largely is: hate#you would make a good dalek ect ect ect#anyway 3 episodes with 3 very distinct and equally definitely traits layed out like: here you go#i don't like elevens era much but those first 3 episodes were great#doctor who#eleven#amy#eleventh doctor#matt smith#dr who#dw#i mean idk this is what river literally had to spell out for him#eleven was careening completely out of control#how long til doctor means warrior indeed?#mine

im doing a very quick (aka skimming-a-lot) GO reread and i'd forgotten how much i love discorporated aziraphale. he is 3000% done. he has no fucks left to give. this part of the book is just him and crowley, independently of each other, having hit rock bottom and come through despair and out on the other side into "fuck it we ball" and it's wonderful. they're so in sync and so unhinged.
favourite discorporated az moments:
telling mr shadwell he's the southern pansy
gets so annoyed with the televangelist he tells him that heaven only has a 50% chance of winning and the rest is propaganda, after denying it for the whole book
"you lot [humanity] are all going to be civilian casualties either way"
telling mrs ormerod that he knows he's in england because nobody else could have asked such a fucking stupid question
world's least sincere "wasn't that touching."
'the exorcist' reference *
extremely eager to murder adam young
i cannot emphasise enough how down with child murder he is **
tells madame tracy they need to be doing 70mph and then makes her fucking vespa warp through space at 200mph
"i'm the nice one. you can't expect me to—oh, blast it. you try to do the decent thing, and where does it get you?" aziraphale snapped his fingers.
* im willing to bet money that was crowley's idea and ended with him feeling vaguely queasy while aziraphale sat next to him going "what absolute nonsense, this isn't how it works at all"
** until he actually meets him. but still.

fae dick grayson's reaction to bruce being lost in the timestream?
I’m afraid I don’t have much knowledge of that incident, but Dick would absolutely lose it
Depending on whether or not he’s aware of Bruce’s continued survival his further actions would differ vastly.
If we go with “Dick knows” then he’s still go on a minor rampage that creates a new ground zero for strange occurrences.
If he doesn’t… well, the “minor” rampage would reach epic proportions….
That’s Dick’s dad they killed. The one who took him in, gave him a new home, the one who accepted him and taught him how to empathize with humans, to make compromises where a fae would never have.
Where it happens… well, let’s just say no human being without a fae’s protection can ever enter this place again without becoming ensnared in the wrathful magic there.
And the rest of the batfamily has to deal with not being let out of Dick’s sight again for several months.
On the plus side, when Tim first suggests that Bruce got lost in the time stream Dick is the first to believe him. 🕰️🌲

the way cesare always has like five layers to justify his actions is so fascinating to me. take him killing juan for example, there's the surface level reason that he created himself (juan being an embarrassment to the family at forli), there's the layer that is lucrezia's happiness was threatened by juan, then there's the one where he's trying to protect her innocence and her soul from committing the act herself, and then the real reasons; he wants to gain power by taking on the role of a soldier and gain his father's trust/love, but he can't do that with juan still living and breathing because no matter how much juan disappoints their father, rodrigo continues to bestow favors upon him and so cesare never feels his father's love. idk he's just the most fascinating male character to ever exist I think and I will love him until I die.

Earth-8: Seven Soldiers After the crisis, Time was broken. There was a vacuum where anyone could step in. If Rip Hunter had lived things might have been different. Those who did survive did their best to honor him building the Linear Authority, Time's Last Best Hope. But that was before the Time War, before Dominus & his Monarchs and the Extant Solution. Time is crumbling and only the future can save us. 7 Heroes from 7 Possible Futures join forces to try and defend the time stream and ensure their own times still come to pass before the clock counts down to Zero Hour.

Watching Gunbuster for the first time, and I love how the show uses its sci-fi elements to examine the "traumatized soldier's return to a home they no longer recognize" trope from a new angle. Plays a similar role in the broader themes of the Horrors of War, but the relativistic space combat shifts the site of that change: the soldiers are stuck in their moment of trauma and the rest of the world has moved past them. A shift in reference frames, if you will. Instead of soldiers returning with forced maturity to an unchanged civilian world that only has space for lives they've outgrown, the solders return with extremely-recent unprocessed trauma to a world that has already forgotten the cost of their service. Whatever the extent people back home feared the alien threat before, they've long since known about each victory, had time to move forward with ordinary lives, while our protagonists lack even old ill-fitting lives to return to after giving their lives up to the space military more literally than normal.

If Marvel characters had abilities like in Keeper of the Lost Cities Bucky would be a Vanisher and you can’t convince me otherwise
Teenage Bucky blinking in and out whenever he gets exited (my favorite thing to think about since I thought of this)
War Bucky and/or early capture Bucky getting lost in thought/losing his mind and fading out without noticing
Hydra beating the crap out of him to get him to stop vanishing unless they order him to or it’s needed for a mission
The Winter Soldier vanishing from the crime scene, contributing to the “ghost story”
Post Insight Bucky Vanishing out of sight out of fear of being found or any social interaction
Idk I’m re reading kotlc for for the first time in a few years and I really like this idea that I can’t shake :)
