(Horror) movies seen in 2023: The Vampire and the Ballerina (1960)
This September and October, I will attempt to see and review as many new-to-me horror movies as I can!
Imagine if Suspiria was fodder for Mystery Science Theater 3000!
Okay, maybe thats not a fair note to start one. How about this: a troupe of dancers comes to stay and practice in the countryside, where they share visits with boyfriends and ghost stories with locals. One of those ghost stories speaks of vampires, and its teller is quick to disabuse the ladies of them being "just like Prince Charming!" Meanwhile, girls are turning up drained of blood after being visited by a monster- or is it, monsters? What relationship do the man and woman living in a nearby forlorn castle have to each other and to the strangers?
It's hard to judge the acting in old dubbed movies, where the English is spoken quickly enough to fit into beats meant for another language. As it is, we get dramatic scenes where it sounds like nobody reacts properly- they speak as fast as possible, and thus sound either too intense or too casual for every conversation. The makeup effects aren't all that good either, consisting of what looks like latex wrinkles on a vampire in his aged form. It's hard not to giggle, especially whenever the plot stops for a sexy dance number.
The visuals, however, are gorgeous. The black and white film creates striking images of doll-like women in black leotards, thick eyeliner, and white-blonde hair, twirling in the dance studios and fainting on the steps of castles. If you happen to run a goth club, I recommend putting this onto a projector and screening it on a wall, with new wave music covering up all the audio.
If you're looking for a fun, cheap vampire movie, you could do a lot worse than The Vampire and the Ballerina. You could do a lot better, too...but that's not always what we horror fans want!

The Italians try their hand at combining horror and sex appeal... and win?! It's L'AMANTE DEL VAMPIRO (1960) aka THE VAMPIRE AND THE BALLERINA from director Renato Polselli! We got castles, we got vampires, we got toxic relationships -- it's a Gothic horror!
Context setting 00:00; Synopsis 10:52; Discussion 21:44; Ranking 36:39
