Miraculous Ladybug Rewatch Episode 71 Timetagger

Into the rabbit hole everyone.

“Eh– The name's Marinette, I bake chouquettes, I love drawing and… sewing blankets? Uh…” Yeah i can’t rap either Marinette.

“Oh no. Not again”

“Alya, can you handle these three on your own? I uh, I just remembered I promised my dad I would try out his new macaron recipe”

“Marinette, just hurry up and transform already”

Yeah no one saw that.

“Let's just end this fast like the last 23 other times”

“Ey! We just got you out of the stone, didn't we? Which means you must have failed somewhere, too”

“Yes, well, no. It was actually your fault. Or more precisely, it will be. In the future, one of your cataclysms will accidentally damage my Miraculous” He’s confused.

“Yes, my watch. Our watch”

“Whoa! This was a Miraculous the whole time?! Oh god and it was destroyed back in season 1”

“You haven't given it to us, yet, Minibug, because you haven't realized just how awesome I really am. But don't worry, you will, one day” I’m still holding on to the idea of The Pharaoh 2 being Bunnyx introduction.

I still don’t get it.

“She doesn't need to transform back before she uses her power again?”

Man i can’t believe i didn’t put the pieces together that Timetagger was Future Chris.

“As soon as you're as cool as I am, mini-me” The Pharaoh 2 when?

What sets Bunnyx apart from all the new heroes? Is that we had no idea about her till Timetagger aired. We all knew about Rena Rouge, Carapace, Queen Bee, Viperion, Pegasus, Ryuko, and King Monkey. But Bunnyx? There was not one spoiler about her till now. That’s one of the reasons why this is one of the best episodes in season 3 And to be honest i always thought that Timetagger was going to be Timebreaker 2 well in a weird way it kinda is. Just that Alix wasn’t the one akumatized like i thought. But hey she’s still in the episode.

“Why doesn't anyone tell me how awesome I am?”

“Because you already know you're the best, Kitty Noir” *Screams in Ladynoir*

“If I'm not Hawkmoth in the future, then that means I failed”

“Or that you've succeeded” This is something the fandom fails to think about. Did Gabriel get his wish, did he get exposed as Hawkmoth, or did something else happened?

“The future is not set in stone, Gabriel” Honesty i take their “The future is not set in stone” comment as a metaphor, by the creators, telling us the fans that this could be the future of Miraculous Ladybug. But it depends how well the series does. Everything isn’t set in stone.

“Alya, it's Marinette! I'm sorry I won't be able to look after Chris and your sisters this afternoon. I— I hadn't finished my presentation for Monday, I hope you're not mad at me”

“No, of course not, no biggy. A friend of mine said she'd take care of them, so Nino and I are going to see a movie”

And then, this bitch shows up.

We find out that there will be a new Hawkmoth in the future, and then Lila shows up at the end lying to Chris, who will one day get akumatized into Timetagger. Very suspicious. Or as we say in Among Us, very sus.

Again Chat, how?

“Everything Bunnyx told us seems crazy. All those supervillains with weird names. Like doctor what's-his-name and Monsieur Rat?”

“Monsieur Rat?! What kind of a codename is that?!”

“Oh, hello! What are you? Hello, cutie. You're even cuter than a pigeon” Monsieur Rat.

Can’t wait for Bunnyx origins.

The Hound: the Man, the Myth, the Helm

For my next thinky, I want to get into the Hound. For a character with no POV chapters in five books, no lines and only the most oblique presence in two books, he looms large in Feast/Dance. He may be only tangentially related to Zombie Catelyn and the Gang, but I err on the side of thoroughness so that’s good enough for me.

This is what we hear about Sandor Clegane in Brienne’s POV:

That was another shock. “How did he die?”

“By the sword, as he had lived.”

“You know this for a certainty?”

“I buried him myself. I can tell you where his grave lies, if you wish. I covered him with stones to keep the carrion eaters from digging up his flesh, and set his helm atop the cairn to mark his final resting place. That was a grievous error. Some other wayfarer found my marker and claimed it for himself. The man who raped and killed at Saltpans was not Sandor Clegane, though he may be as dangerous. The riverlands are full of such scavengers. I will not call them wolves. Wolves are nobler than that … and so are dogs, I think.

“I know a little of this man, Sandor Clegane. He was Prince Joffrey’s sworn shield for many a year, and even here we would hear tell of his deeds, both good and ill. If even half of what we heard was true, this was a bitter, tormented soul, a sinner who mocked both gods and men. He served, but found no pride in service. He fought, but took no joy in victory. He drank, to drown his pain in a sea of wine. He did not love, nor was he loved himself. It was hate that drove him. Though he committed many sins, he never sought forgiveness. Where other men dream of love, or wealth, or glory, this man Sandor Clegane dreamed of slaying his own brother, a sin so terrible it makes me shudder just to speak of it. Yet that was the bread that nourished him, the fuel that kept his fires burning. Ignoble as it was, the hope of seeing his brother’s blood upon his blade was all this sad and angry creature lived for … and even that was taken from him, when Prince Oberyn of Dorne stabbed Ser Gregor with a poisoned spear.”

“You sound as if you pity him,” said Brienne.

“I did. You would have pitied him as well, if you had seen him at the end. I came upon him by the Trident, drawn by his cries of pain. He begged me for the gift of mercy, but I am sworn not to kill again. Instead, I bathed his fevered brow with river water, and gave him wine to drink and a poultice for his wound, but my efforts were too little and too late. The Hound died there, in my arms. You may have seen a big black stallion in our stables. That was his warhorse, Stranger. A blasphemous name. We prefer to call him Driftwood, as he was found beside the river. I fear he has his former master’s nature.”

The horse. She had seen the stallion, had heard it kicking, but she had not understood. Destriers were trained to kick and bite. In war they were a weapon, like the men who rode them. Like the Hound. “It is true, then,” she said dully. “Sandor Clegane is dead.”

“He is at rest.” The Elder Brother paused. “You are young, child. I have counted four-and-forty name days … which makes me more than twice your age, I think. Would it surprise you to learn that I was once a knight?”

That the Elder Brother seems to understand so much of Sandor’s mentality is sufficient, without having seen Season 6, to suspect Sandor is very much alive in the Elder Brother’s care. The Elder Brother paints a picture of a man who is suffering more than sinning, who needs comfort more than punishment. That understanding is irrelevant to what the word on the road is now.

What happened to Sandor Clegane is a separate issue from what was done with his dog’s-head helmet. The helmet was seen on a man who killed, raped, burned and committed other atrocities at Saltpans, and thus, the Hound’s legend outlives his efforts:

“How do you fight a man like that? And there’s the Hound as well. He slew twenty men at Saltpans.”

Strongboar guffawed. “Twenty fat innkeeps, maybe. Twenty serving men pissing in their breeches. Twenty begging brothers armed with bowls. Not twenty knights. Not me.”

“There is a knight at Saltpans,” Ser Arwood insisted. “He hid behind his walls whilst Clegane and his mad dogs ravaged through his town. You have not seen the things he did, ser. I have. When the reports reached the Twins, I rode down with Harys Haigh and his brother Donnel and half a hundred men, archers and men-at-arms. We thought it was Lord Beric’s work, and hoped to find his trail. All that remains of Saltpans is the castle, and old Ser Quincy so frightened he would not open his gates, but shouted down at us from his battlements. The rest is bones and ashes. A whole town. The Hound put the buildings to the torch and the people to the sword and rode off laughing. The women … you would not believe what he did to some of the women. I will not speak of it at table. It made me sick to see.”

“I cried when I heard,” said Lady Amerei.

Jaime sipped his wine. “What makes you certain it was the Hound?” What they were describing sounded more like Gregor’s work than Sandor’s. Sandor had been hard and brutal, yes, but it was his big brother who was the real monster in House Clegane.

“He was seen,” Ser Arwood said. “That helm of his is not easily mistaken, nor forgotten, and there were a few who survived to tell the tale. The girl he raped, some boys who hid, a woman we found trapped beneath a blackened beam, the fisherfolk who watched the butchery from their boats …”

“Do not call it butchery,” Lady Mariya said softly. “That gives insult to honest butchers everywhere. Saltpans was the work of some fell beast in human skin.”

Those who dealt with Sandor know better than to buy into the rumors. Jaime, for example, knows well enough to say that doesn’t sound like something Sandor would do. To those who knew Sandor only by reputation, the rumors are good enough. The distinctive dog’s head was seen in the atrocities at Saltpans, therefore Sandor’s name is attached to the massacre.

Eventually we find out who brought Sandor’s helmet into the violence: it was Rorge in the Brave Companions. The slander of Sandor (pun acknowledged) doesn’t end with him. After Brienne kills Rorge, Lem Lemoncloak in the new-improved Brotherhood Without Banners rocks the dog’s head. Thus, the idea, separate from the reality, of Sandor Clegane’s reign of terror lives on.

The latest organization to associate themselves with the supposed depravity of the Hound is the Brotherhood Without Banners, under the leadership of Lady Stoneheart, exercising the vengeance of the Starks against the oppressive Lannister regime. How interesting, that the instrument of the Starks’ revenge is doing worse than the Lannisters’ attack dog ever did.

When Brienne tells Jaime “elsewise the Hound will kill her,” he’s already thought that level of brutality is well outside of what Sandor Clegane might do. What Brienne tells him is enough to get him out of earshot of his army. What conversation they have between then, and dealing with Lady Stoneheart, is anyone’s guess.

Well after Sandor Clegane has decided to cool off and spend some time dealing with his demons away from innocent people, the image of the Hound keeps on doing harm to the Riverlands. The menace of the dog’s head works independently of political affiliation; if someone wants to leave a trail of destruction in their wake, the Hound’s helmet is good enough, no matter whose regime benefits from the atrocities.

At this point, the Hound’s reputation has taken on a life of its own. If his name can be attached to hanging every Lannister/Frey/Bolton in sight from a tree, then what is the historical difference between the Lannister regime and the Stark legacy? Only time will tell.

MentalMasochism Reviews: Vampire Knight - Anime

I’ll be combining Vampire Knight and its second season, Vampire Knight Guilty, into the same review. Oh boy, vampires? School? Romance? What more could we want?! We follow Yuki Cross, who is a guardian at Cross Academy, a school dedicated to trying to build peace between vampires and humans….by not telling the humans that vampires even exist, we’re just letting them think these beautiful and highly intelligent people are just not allowed to associate with the “Day Class” because why? Who knows! What matters is that they’re taking classes in the same building, at different times! Yuki and her fellow guardian, Zero Kiryu ensure the peace between classes. Yuki is a human girl that is plagued by severe PTSD from her first memory, that of a terrible vampire going to eat her, but thankfully she was saved by the president of the Moon Class (the vamps), Kaname Kuran. What she doesn’t know is that Zero is going to devolve into a Level E Vampire, which basically means he’s a mindless vampire out for human blood. Don’t worry, he’s fine. He starts off drinking her blood, and then Kaname offers his blood to him with the stipulation that Zero must “never betray” Yuki...Oooh, the plot thickens! Too bad we never entirely see what he means by that, unless he’s referring to the season 2 finale?? Oh well, at least you know he’ll never betray her!

Honestly, I considered Zero and his whole “cursed twins” arc with Ichiru and Hiou Shizuka, the Pureblood who killed his family and turned him into a vampire, the be one of the most infuriatingly dull aspects of the entire anime. I get that he’s oh so tortured, but for god’s sake, you don’t have to be a complete wimp about it! Anyway, yes, the vampire that killed Zero’s family shows up in the first season. Don’t worry, she dies by Kaname’s hand after getting shot by Zero’s anti-vampire gun. It was incredibly boring, and I spent the entire time wishing it to end. Seriously, I was rather hoping he’d pull the trigger in this scene from one of the very early episodes. Please dude, put us both out of the misery…

Yuki is constantly left in the dark about everything, from both Kaname and Zero, and she’s basically just left blaming herself for being the weak one. No, not really. You’re by no means strong, but it’s not your fault that they refuse to let you get involved in anything. So I’m going to have to say that I much more support Kaname and Yuki as a couple--

Well s@#%…..Even still, they make a better couple-- and oh, what’s that, Kaname?

Well cool, they’re not even real siblings, so you’re going to explain that to her, right, Kaname?

No? Okay….just use your non-human status as a way to say that “incest” is totally accepted. Seriously, why can’t you just explain how it’s acceptable so that I don’t feel weird about supporting them as a couple?

Whelp, this is an odd place to be, but yeah, looks like I’m supporting weird vampire-non-incest-maybe?

Well god@#$%it… Moving on!

The interactions between the two has its own level of annoying, neither of them want to be straight with each other. Okay, technically not entirely true, I consider Kaname far more upfront with his feelings than Yuki is, even if he hides a whole lot of things from her, and is actually pretty manipulative. Huh...now that I think about it, all three of them are kind of awkward… Still though, vampire-non-incest-that-actually-kinda-is-incest all the way!

To back up a bit, before the whole incest-non-incest thing, Yuki starts getting weird visions of blood, blood everywhere! She begs Kaname to tell her their connection, to which he agrees, if she becomes his lover. Sweet, the couple is finally together guys! Her visions get worse, and all attempts to remember her past just cause her migraines and more sleeplessness. Zero’s brother also shows up, this time with Lord Rido by his side, the uncle to Kaname. Their relationship is tense to say the least...

After much torment, Yuki is losing it, and Kaname decides to finally “awaken” her. Which is when we learned that they are siblings-but-not-but-still-related. Zero is of course pissed, and Rido sits in the corner rubbing his hands together evilly. This is actually probably one of my favorite scenes in the anime, and was what drew me in when I was looking around for something to watch.

A particularly irksome part nearing the end of the second season is how Zero decides to absolutely despise Yuki. She spends her time feeling like she’s been deceiving him (again, not her fault/choice nor did she even know, so why she’s blaming herself AGAIN is beyond me) while he spends his time basically just crying and feeling sorry for himself, because he is a vampire and a vampire hunter, and wants to kill all of them, which now includes her as well, because she is a pureblood vampire… because so much for the whole “coexist” mentality which was the entire point of the school in the first place.

Anyway, Rido wakes up with the help from Kaname’s blood, that was willingly given in hopes to finally destroy him once and for all. Yuki runs around, constantly ignoring Kaname, who pretty much just want to keep her safely out of the fighting. Kaname AND Zero’s master, Yagari, both tell him to stop being such a baby, and he is informed that Kaname’s entire intention for everything he did for him was so that he could become the ultimate Vampire Hunter, and destroy Rido, something he has been unable to do because he is the progenitor of the Kurans.

Yuki decides to be a complete moron and lead herself and her vampire protectors into danger by going to take Rido head on. It quite obviously doesn’t work, and why she thought she could manage this, being such a newly awakened vampire is beyond me. Her Artemis Rod weapon finally proves useful (seriously, it has been completely worthless up until now) and she gets all of the baby vampires to run away. She’s promptly restrained, like an idiot, and things are looking tense, but don’t worry, they’re fine. Zero kills Rido with his transformed anti-vampire weapon, Bloody Rose. Kaname also destroys the entire governing body of the vampire world.

Then Zero does probably the most jerk move, and demands that Yuki drink his blood, just to prove that she is indeed a vampire. Her being a vampire allows him to have a clear conscious about promising to kill her next time they meet? But he literally forces her to admit that she can’t be anything but his enemy. That aside, Yuki decides to leave the school with Kaname. Which just leaves a massive amount of dead bodies and devastation that the Headmaster gets to explain to the remaining student body, who all stayed in the auditorium during the entirety of the epic fights….

Bottom line: This isn’t a terrible anime, per se. I think possibly my biggest complaint could also be seen as a praise too, and that is-- this anime doesn’t really focus on the romance quite as much as I expected. Which is good and bad. Considering that Yuki and Kaname essentially end up together in the end, I rather wished to be able to see more of their relationship. I understand that she considered him above her and out of her reach, but by the time they did get together, everything felt really rushed, so there wasn’t a chance for their relationship to develop further. While I like romance in moderation, this is actually a case of where it was too much on the back burner. There are plenty of times where they could have expanded on certain scenes to show more of their relationship, and I would have rather watch more growth between those two characters than to watch some of the other subplots. It’s made very clear that Kaname loves Yuki more than anything, and he even has a touching scene toward the end where he apologizes for how he has hurt her. So, since this anime clearly leaves things unfinished, and I have no interest in reading a manga to tie up the loose ends, I guess I’ll just have to fantasize about how wonderful marriage life must be for Yuki and Kaname.
