The Ballad of Jane Doe but as it relates to Sasha/Not-Sasha/The Stranger. You get me?
#i was just relistening to it and OUGH there’s a lot of good stuff#sasha begging for someone to tell her she’s a person/not-sasha needing sasha to inform her who she is#the background music would work very well in the ritual#‘choir never complete’ = the originals slowly getting picked off STARTING WITH HER#the overarching theme of identity loss and the desperate search for it integral to jane’s character (rtc tma au???)#and more closely related to the play jane looks very much like an avatar. all-black eyes. very puppetlike movements when she’s in the air#the way she’s just slightly off and makes the other kids’ hair stand on end. constantly asking them questions about herself#questions she should have the answers to.#she’s erased from the news coverage of the incident like not-sasha erased the original from record so her coworkers don’t realise#ooooooooh i could go on GO LISTEN AND COME BACK#the magnus archives#ride the cyclone#tma#rtc#sasha james#jane doe#the ballad of jane doe#the stranger#not sasha

neither lumpus nor jane want to die alone and that's both such a massive part of the inner workings of their minds to me and yet what it spawns out of them is also exactly the reason why they shouldn't ever be together ❤️ amen
#talk#camp lazlo#scoutmaster lumpus#jane doe#there's like so much room for them to paralell each other like ugh#my Themes...#but like to me it's either going to flames immediately or enabling the worst of them#cus frankly anything else also isn't very interesting to me#and don't get me wrong i love when lumpus is being a fucking idiot over her#but like What is there for jane? NOTHING#she deserves so much better#at least with slinkman he and lumpus have history y'know it's so much different when you're already life partners#but anyway it's funny to me because jane is slinkman's friend FIRST OF ALL and lumpus's Target of Affection SECOND#he's in the middle of them here#but if i had to see jane ''fix'' lumpus i would put my head into my hands and slink into the deep earth#the two of them getting married in canon is only excused and funny due to the fact that lumpus gets arrested literally a few episodes later

I love how similar the themes are in I Saw The TV Glow and We’re All Going To The World’s Fair, about how it deals with the real and the unreal.
We’re All Going To The World’s Fair focuses more on the real—what we’re being shown through Casey’s channel and what JLB perceives—as being unreal. It’s a story, it’s invented, it’s art, JLB is lying.
Where as I Saw The TV Glow focuses on the unreal as real, where The Pink Opaque is truly reality, and the “real world” (the Midnight Realm) in which Maddy and Owen are stuck is actually just a prison for their true selves.
#jane schoenbrun#i saw the tv glow#isttvg#isttg#we’re all going to the world’s fair#were all going to the worlds fair#wagttwf#films#film#movies#themes#i love the thematic similarities#i noticed this watching world’s fair after i saw the tv glow and i was like ‘yo!’#it’s very cool i love it#jane schoenbrun the person that you are#i hope this makes sense

oh, yeah, another thing i noticed that was odd about s5 in comparison to earlier seasons was how much they relied on like. not the history of the doctor, exactly, but the image of that history. whether from little easter eggs of the first doctor’s picture popping up everywhere to i think the two(?) times in the season we get a montage of past doctors. and i honestly can’t remember anything like that happening earlier (with the exception of the time crash short, which felt more substantial to me and was also like. 7 straight minutes of david tennant being allowed to fangirl.)
and i say ‘the image’ because hell knows the RTD era was pulling from doctor who past left, right, and center, but it rarely felt like a moment of ‘look at this old thing, you remember old thing? old thing was cool and so are we for continuing it. and more like ‘here’s a species/character/etc from classic who. and here’s how they’ve changed and fit into the new world we’ve built for the show.’
I guess, the difference here for me is that. i haven’t watched classic who. s5 shows me a slideshow of doctors and to me, those are the guys i once ranked by how sexy i think they are. and not much else. i don’t have an emotional connection to an image. but take, say, school reunion? an episode that was my favorite even back when i was a kid specifically because i adored sarah jane? i had no idea who she was then, i only just figured out a little bit ago which doctor she traveled with, and exclusively all i’ve watched of her is that episode in s2 and the sarah jane adventures. and yet, that episode, without the context there for me, managed to make sense to me. i’m sure it was probably even more impactful to fans of sarah jane from classic who, but it didn’t lose its impact without that knowledge.
so, that’s a shift. i don’t want to say it’s a negative one, exactly, because maybe people who have seen classic who like these references and i’m missing something. but, to me, it feels a little more shallow.
#sorry if i kept talking about sarah jane and school reunion we’d be here all day. her reintroduction to nuwho is phenomenal.#even without classic who. you get it. you get what the doctor did to her. you understand how much it hurt her. by giving her time with rose#we’re able to use what we know about rose to parallel her with sarah jane and infer that sarah jane was a lot like her once. it’s good!#and seeing pictures of the first doctor is like. very funny because he’s a silly little guy. but i don’t know that man.#but yeah. another example i’d put out there is Dalek. and yes everyone loves dalek we all know its good. but. without the context of classic#who. this was the choice of how to reintroduce the daleks to the audience. not as silly tin can killing machine. but as this. this wretched#and pitiable thing that dies to see the sunlight. this monster that is. in its last moments. capable of change. however small.#(a theme that i think links up well to evolution of the daleks in s3. i think its interesting how we’re invited to see the daleks first as#beings that have had a great and terrible injustice done to them. (in episode: the dalek being chained up and tortured. in a wider context:#how daleks are made at all.) before we’re introduced to them as a galaxy-wide threat intent on inflicting that same suffering on the rest of#the universe.)#MY POINT IS: nuwho and classic who mix well when the classic who elements are reintroduced in a way that makes sense both for people with#the back knowledge of classic who (and maybe they get even more out of it) while ALSO makign sense to people who’ve only seen nuwho.#anyway. this is a small thing its far from like. a show-ruining point. its literally fine lol.#doctor who#dw lb

going unbelievably insane over this
#tm#i i'm like i'm short circuiting#the way - when they both carry so much pain and trauma with them; where they deal with death and the worst of people every day;#when they've lost so much; lost each other more than once -#one of the most pervasive themes in their story; woven throughout it from the very beginning is happiness#wanting to give whatever happiness they can to others -#comforting families and getting justice for victims and jane's gifts and pranks and lisbon's supportive leadership and understanding -#wanting to be happy themselves; and maybe most importantly wanting the other to be happy#like just off the top of my head (and i'm so tempted to go right back and rewatch and actually write down every one) there's so much of it#and it makes me crazy because of how it's expressed on both sides#lisbon doesn't SAY it much - most of the 'i want you to be happy' kind of lines are jane's - but she SHOWS it#from the day they met and she helped him up off the floor she's there in support of him;#her quiet comfort when he's low; her eye rolls and indulging grins when he's pulling a silly trick on the team;#her soft smiles in the background when someone genuinely thanks him and he doesn't know what to do#with the pain she has in her past; in growing up; with the tough skin she's wrapped herself in to get through what she has#she appreciates the quieter moments; the moments where her big bombastic partner lets down his guard and#stops putting on so much of a show and she can see the joy he can still find in the little things even with all the darkness he carries#it's jane that has the big loud moments - the confessions and the spoken words - where he states outright (and repeatedly)#how much he wants her to be happy; how important it is to him and that makes so much sense because that's who he is#(not always of course but more often than not and that's how he presents himself)#he's dramatic and he's bold and his grief is the same; this giant unavoidable yoke that's never going to completely fall off his shoulders#and idk there's just something so beautiful to me about this man with the more obvious burden of pain being so doggedly - and vocally -#committed to the happiness of this woman who tries to hide her pain and shies away from comfort more than she's able to accept it#and that through everything they've been together the ways both of them approach happiness and each other have also come together#where he can say something like this and not only can she be happy for him but she can know just how much of that is because of her#'for the first time in YOU know how long' and she does#they just make me crazy

I love Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and it's theme about the tragedy of men and women who become most famous through their impact on children. How they are doomed to watch their most devoted fans grow up and learn to stop loving them, of being an adult and never having the respect of other adults for the work you do. Of being dependent, financially and egotistically on this rapidly changing and inherently fluid class of person. Of not fading away into obscurity, but the much worse and more specific tragic fate of being rediscovered over and over again by your former, now adult, fans and being given the impossible responsibility of upkeeping a sense of innocence and childlike wonder that you are associated with but that is destined to fade from all adults --- of being blamed for that loss when kids become old enough to see the cracks in your façade that were always there, being reminded of your own age and insignificant as children who once saw you as an impossible compenetant adult grow up and begin to perform circles around you, both of you horrified by the development but you the one heavy with the blame
#life aquatic with steve zissou#wes anderson#its not the main or only theme but its so good and so rarely talked about probably because its not very relatable but its SO evocative#Steve is SO painfully awkward with Ned and Jane in every scene and you KNOW why#you can FEEL all these silent negotiations#Steven can NEVER live up to the hype he builds in the minds of children when they meet him as adults#but he inspires them so much he is DOOMED to KEEP meeting them as adults as they enter his field and related fields#as they grow up and inherit wealth and replace his donors#at least when he was starting his financial supporters had no prior expectations#but NOW he has to impress adults who REMEMBER being impressed by him as children#and that is an IMPOSSIBLE standard

rtc good
#gonna go find fifty million productions of this to freak out over different executions of productions roles yaay#actually no i WILL ramble in the tags you dont get to escape me#i really like the music its so great (the different genres but also the TONE is so good like that subtly unnerving sense mwah)#though it DID feel like one or two songs werent QUITE up to par. maybe that was just the version i saw.#LOVED the costuming and set especially and USE OF PROPS was so great. ive seen glimpses of other versions where the effects are just INSANE#so gotta check those out#i think my only real criticism is like. jane doe feels really really obvious.#and i dont mind it because they make it work with the themes theyre presenting but. its still very predictable#i was kind of hoping NOBODY would be revived in the end but i still enjoyed the ending a lot#and i cried obviously lol a lot of things hit close to home

losing it
#i'm gonna run this into the ground like i did the happiness theme but it's kind of bugging me out a bit so indulge me ok#it's capital F faith and it's faith in other people and lisbon has both and jane has neither#he believes in the good in people but that and having faith in them are two completely different things....except for one person#the one person who despite all they've been through; despite all he's put her through; even with all her doubts; still has faith in him too#anyway i'm having a very normal and sane wednesday hbu#tm

[image description: a tweet by kurtis conner. the tweet reads, "Peter Parker would be a good drag queen because he is very athletic so he's good at dancing and doing the splits and stuff and he's got little jokes and quips and also he can sew." end image description.]
he’s literally so right about everything
#when you look in the notes for this you get very few image descriptions and way too many identical gifs of tom holland in drag#anyway. when i was a kid i won a mary jane novel in like. a raffle at a superhero-themed art event#or something. i forget the details#but anyway in the book she was like 'peter borrowed my blue ballet tights and returned them all stretched out??'#so i offer that as evidence i guess#that book and spiderman: turn off the dark are like. my main reference points for spiderman which is kind of scary
