January and Jane from The 10,000 Doors of January!
historical fashion details below the cut
From what I gathered the book takes place in the Edwardian era, which is one of the best periods of European fashion in my opinion. January is wearing a fancy lady lingerie gown--which just meant a lightweight white summer gown. I put her in one because she's supposed to have grown up higher class, though from what I can tell through research I think lower class ladies would have been able to afford lingerie gowns as well.
Jane is wearing a jumper dress, which were all the rage in the edwardian era. I could have drawn her in a maid outfit, but that didn't seem right since she is one for so little of the book. I thought the maid outfits of the edwardian era looked a little like jumper dresses so I put her in one. I wasn't super sure what to do with her hair, and tbh I'm not sure if I liked what I ended up with. She's described as having short hair, but most of edwardian hairstyles required long hair but looked short because it's all pinned up. So I just gave her short hair and went with it.

You see, doors are many things: fissures and cracks, ways between, mysteries and borders. But more than anything else, doors are change.

If there's one constant in fantasy it's cats. I don't know why intellectually, but I do viscerally.
The rules of magic and reality just don't apply to cats and there is nothing authors can do to change that.

There was no room, it turned out, for little girls who wandered off the edge of the map and told the truth about the mad, impossible things they found there.

"The Ten Thousand Doors of January", by Alix E. Harrow.
"At this point, you're thinking that this story isn't really about Doors, but about the more private, and altogether more miraculous, doors that can open between two hearts. Maybe it is, in the end - I happen to believe every sotry is a love story if you catch it at the right moment, slantwise in the light of dusk - but that wasn't the case then.", from The Ten Thousand Doors of January, by Alix E. Harrow.
"Firstly, because what is written is what is true. Words and their meanings carry weight in the material world; they shape and reshape realities by means of a very ancient alchemy. Even my own writings - vain as they are - can have just enough power to reach the right person and tell the truth that will change the nature of things.", from The Ten Thousand Doors of January, by Alix E. Harrow.

When the other polls will be out, they'll be in my 'fantasy polls' tag.
I forgot to mention I also have a 'sf polls' tag with difficult choices to make in the first polls.
